[RBW] Nitto Big Bag Rack + Berthoud fender incompatibility

Last weekend I mounted the Nitto Big Bag Rack on the Bombadil and like it a
lot. Today I went on to install 60mm steel fenders and realized that the
rack has a tab with a pin (I don't know what it's for) that interferes with
the fender strut. I ended up removing the rack and installing the fenders,
but now I'm puzzled as to what to do to put the rack back on. Do I just take
a saw and hack off that tab?

I figure you guys must have some experience with this problem and might help
me address this problem.

access so you end up blindly feeling around for items. A big
improvement would be to have a 3 sided zipped flap, then at least you
could look down into the bag and see stuff.

Yep!  Use a Moto-Tool with small cutter if you have one. A hacksaw will work, 
but you may need to grind or file the "stump" flush.

If there isn't one already, drill a hole in the tab and attach the
fender strut to that instead of attaching it to the frame.

I think the pin is there to secure the bottom of a pannier. Most
modern panniers can be secured at the bottom without the pin, so you
can probably saw it off with no problem.

The pin in question got in the way of my SKS fenders and my Berthoud
fenders, so I sawed it off very soon after I got the rack.

I think you're missing something.  You don't size a Berthoud bag
supported by a Berthoud decaleur by the capacity based on what you want
to carry, you size it based on the size of your head tube and the
location of your handlebar.  There's only so low the decaleur will go,
and the bottom of the bag is located by the height of the rack, so
there's a certain amount of height the bag MUST have.  

For me, that means I must use the GB28 or 2882 on my Kogswell and my
Saluki.  It also fits on my VO Randonneur, although on that bike the
bottom of the rack is a little higher (700C vs 650B wheel) so I could
use the next size smaller.  But since I already have the 2882 fitted
with a Berthoud decaleur, that's the bag I use on the VO.

I got one of the salsa crossing guards from jim thill and they worked
really nicely and seem to be (more or less) a chain ring with no teeth
on it. Sturdy, slim

it has kept my pants clean for a while. :)

Someone else posted this up here awhile ago.  But it seems like Taiwan
is the new Japan as far as bike manufacturing goes.

The soma/riv looks really nice and unique.  I think it will be
successful.  To me things have shifted a little in the past few years
and if riv did the Bleriot with QBP now instead of a few years ago, it
would probably be more successful.  I only say this because it is more
common to walk into a bike shop today and see a surly, salsa or
something made out of steel.

The QBP Bleriot was plenty successful.  It was discontinued because
Grant did not like the way e-tailers were undercutting the retail price.

I can see how (I mean, clearly see how) it could sound like we're thru with
the AHH, but it's not so. Only the Japanese ones. Toyo has never made them
bigger than 58, anyway..and Wford has never made them smaller than 57. But
Wford has made many and will continue to (forseeble future, etc), and it
would be easy enough to have them make the smaller ones. SO: Sorry 'bout
that.

I have a small Berthoud (GB 22)on my Kogswell.  It was not selected
based on headtube size since I gave up ease-of-removal.  I attached it
to my rack with P clamps.  In other words, it stays on the bike almost
all the time.  I understand this will only be a solution for a few.

I wouldn't recommend the northern section of Route 9.  very few miles
are what I consider scenic and it is dominated by motorcycle traffic
in the summer.

If you head up along the lake, consider crossing into VT.  if you stay
in NY, i suggest  getting a good map and finding a more scenic route
through the Adirondacks, which offers some fantastic riding.

It's just a lot to be carrying around if you're not using it.  The trunk bag
looks perfectly packed (although less accessible).  Everything is a trade
off!  :-)

I would second Patrick's observation about Rt 9, or 9N in NY, although
9N is OK north of Lake Placid.  But the Adirondacks has a lot of great
bike roads, with well maintained, wide shoulders.  I've ridden rt 30 &
28, and really enjoyed them.  The roads in Vt tend to be in much
poorer condition than in NY, sorry to say, but there are lots of
beautiful views and most of the drivers are pretty patient.

The RouteVerte book is good for roads but don't rely on it to take you
to the most interesting places.

Stuff in a trunk bag is perhaps 1% as accessible as in a handlebar bag.

As for "not using it," do you know before you set out on a ride whether
you will need to remove and carry your neoprene booties during the ride?
Or that warm, but bulky, wool outer jersey?  Running out of space is a
problem.  Having extra isn't.

And now, for a dissenting opinion:

I just recieved my Brand V handlebar bag, matched to a Brand V Keven's
Bag this past week.  I happily mounted them on a steel bike (Pereira)
with Jack Browns and  spent the weekend grinding away on the Mayacama
hills by and between Napa and Sonoma Valleys, Trinity Road, Mt.
Veeder, Oakville Grade, et cetera.  Man, I love that bag!  I didn't
have any trouble operating the zipper or looking inside, grabbing
sunglasses, food (especially during the bonk on the last climb,

I don't think that it is necessarily an "either/or" thing.  You can
select the bag needed for a particular purpose on any given day.
Anyone who is in to photography "gets it".  The photographer has a
slew of bags suited to any purpose.  A large shoulder bag that can
accommodate two camera bodies, 3-4 lenses, flash, etc.  Another medium
bag that carries one camera with lens attached and a couple of
accessory lens.  Finally (in this imaginary hypothesis) another bag
that is suitable for a camera with lens mounted and a couple of
smallish accessories.

Similarly, I don't always ride my Riv with its Berthoud GB2886 bag on
the front rack.  For shorter day rides (especially here in Tucson,
where a sweater and rain gear are rarely needed), I have my Berthoud
GB786 seat bag (from which the Rivendell "Banana bag" was derived)
which amply accommodates the tools, spares, wallet, keys and snacks I
need for a day ride.

True,  and I've also noticed that if you're using Campy  ergo shifters the 
velcro attachments to the hoods make it cumbersome to use the  thumb tab 
shifters while wearing wool  gloves. Not a bag I'm able to use in  cold weather.

Hoping that the "San Marcos" comes through as it looks very
interesting.  By the time I can scrape together a grand for a new
frame it would appear that the choices in steel lugged frames will be
plentiful  SamH-San Marcos-VO Rando and if I can drop some tonnage the
Simpleone would also be interesting assuming it uses the same Suze
wheelset/double chain ring setup the QB has.

Anyway nice to have a bounty of choices at the "low end" of the lugged
steel goodness market

[RBW] FS: 7S era Shimano 105 group minus hubs

Howdy folks.

I have a nearly complete 7S Shimano 105 group (no hubs/wheels).  I am not
sure exactly why I collected it, but I did and I don't see using it anytime
soon.  I think it is all xx-1055, the stuff that is sort of a greenish
(IMHO) silver.  It is all fully functional, but not all in the same
condition.  The cranks are the roughest with a fair amount of paint/finish
loss but all threads and the chainrings are fine.  The brakes are missing
the mounting nuts and have a bit of corrosion on the chrome parts, but
nothing terrible.  The brake levers very lightly used and pretty much like
new.  The derailleurs are good, the front nicer than rear which has quite a
few scratches. The shifters are used but nice.  Just to be clear, this
"group" includes:  cranks/chainrings, front and rear brake calipers,
shifters, front and rear derailleurs.  Here is a picture:

FedEx ground or USPS most likely.

Hmmm. I have a 63cm Hilsen that I could swear is made by Toyo. It
doesn't really matter to me who made it, the bike is great. I'm glad

You'd probably have to ask Riv directly (offlist) to know for sure.
ISTR that the odd sizes were being made at Waterford and the evens at
Toyo, but i could be wrong. Guessing by the size breakdown, i'd guess
that W'ford made all the 700c frames, Toyo all the 650b.

Hadn't heard that. 

As a single data point (with four variables), my Hilsen is Toyo-built, was a
59, has a four number place serial number that starts "AH", and has bottom
of the downtube bottle bosses.

I can believe it. It's a large size, which is nice - but doesn't suit
a lot of people who would be targetting a mixte. IT's been around a
bit if you look UP CLOSE on the pictures and there's a day left.
There's no point bidding on it until you're down to the last half hour
or so anyway.

Thanks Ryan. I also think it's a looker - and was inspired by other
bikes I've seen here, Flickr, and Cyclofiend (I do intend to send
pictures there, too.)

I figured the bulldog mini would fit up front, but was pleasantly
surprised that it fit so well in the seat bag. I had previously tried
to get it in a Keven's bag, and it didn't really work. I don't lock up
this bike very often, so easy access isn't a priority. I also like
keeping the load up front as light as possible - so tools, lock etc
behind the saddle works well for me.

Mine, a 63cm, has three water bottle mounts and is the Toyo blue as
opposed to the softer blue of the Waterford Hilsens. I don't think
Grant's statement is entirely accurate. I think there was a thing in
the reader that had the introduction for the Hilsen that said they
were being made at both locations and mentioned nothing about that
having to do with size. I just checked Cyclofiend's site for the scans
of the introduction.

one" out of a belief that a Toyo-built isn't every bit as good. Both
shops make superbe frames."

I agree. There is one in my house already and another one coming but
neither of them are riv's. I looked hard at this one and for what it
is I think I'd be better off getting a betty/yves and springing for
the extra paint job, then I get the specific color I want.

Hope someone enjoys it and if they get it for $950 - even better for them.

I ordered an AHH 61cm in November, and Keven told me I had my choice of Toyo or 
Waterford.  We debated pros and cons, and I chose the Waterford (MUSA and all 
that).  So it would seem there are 61cm frames from both sources.  Bike should 
be here in a few weeks -- it's getting polished Paul Racers, and apparently the 
polishing machine at Paul broke.

Then I again I just recently talked to the folks at Mountain Sports
Ltd in bristol, tn and they have 2 61cm AHH in stock just waiting to
be bought/built.

The problem with the delayed gratification is that when I finally got myself to 
pull the trigger, I wanted it yesterday.  So now I find myself trolling on eBay 
for an interim "fix".  There's an Atlantis in my size on offer that would make 
a great errand/commuter bike -- but then of course I'd have to figure out a way 
to persuade my S.O. that TWO Rivs is an even better idea than one!.

The atlantis is a great bike, I have a 58cm and if I got an AHH I'd
have an excuse to put the really silly-large tires on the atlantis and
make the AHH the 'longer ride' bike.

I was watching it under a theory that perhaps 15 years from now my
range of motion may decrease to the point where I would want a Mixte.
Now that someone is bidding (and presumably others will join in
tomorrow) I am backing off.  It is one thing to pay under a grand for
a bike to keep it on ice.  Another altogether to pay two bills (which
I think this may end up going for).

So if the day ever comes, it will be back to the custom builders for
me.

I am not positive that the Rivendell bikes always follow this-   but I
think the Waterford frames have serial numbers that begin with a
single letter, from [A-M] (excluding 'I') followed by 5 digits.The
letter represents the month it was made, from A=January to M=December,
with no letter 'I'.  The first two digits are the year and the last
three are the frame number for that month:

When I bought my 61cm AHH in September, I was also offered the choice of
Toyo or Waterford. I chose the Waterford one just because I liked the
lighter colored blue better. As far as I know, the color is a sure give-away
of the origin of the bike. Ligher blue = Waterford, darker blue = Toyo.
There may be additional details as expressed above.

 The easy way to tell is by the rear dropouts. The Waterford dropout
is very distinct style and it clearly has WATERFORD stamped on it. The
serial number sequence is consistent with all Waterford built frames.
My 59cm Waterford AHH had mounts for only two bottles.

looking at is a 61cm, which is the size Hilsen Keven put me on, but I worry 
that with the fat tires the 61cm Atlantis might be hard to straddle.

The atlantis is a great bike, I have a 58cm and if I got an AHH I'd have an 
excuse to put the really silly-large tires on the atlantis and make the AHH the 
'longer ride' bike.

See, this is exactly my problem. On the 58cm atlantis I'm fine. It's
comfy, I can ride for a long time w/o any pain.  but I'm at
the top end of a nitto deluxe stem and that seems like I may have gone
too small.

But if I put 42 or 45mm tires on it it's getting more and more snug. I
think a set of 60mm tires would make things even more snug. This is
why I'd want to try out a 59cm and a 61cm. Given my pbh (which seems
to get higher everytime I measure it)  I'd probably hit a 60cm almost
perfect but probably the best way to know is try all of them out.

Right -- but there are no dealers who have frames, let alone built bikes, 
anywhere near lil' ol' Delaware.

I doubt I'll bid anywhere near high enough to get this Atlantis, so it's 
probably a moot point.  And -- the good news -- I just talked to Keven at Riv, 
who told me my brakes are in his hands and the build can begin promptly.  Only 
a couple of weeks longer

[RBW] savannah georgia bike shop

Georgia. His K-Mart mountain bike isn't cutting it for his commute to
work as an attorney. Of course, his budget is low and he's looking for

How old are you, anyway?  I'm 67 and I have plenty of range of motion
for a diamond frame.  So, too, did Ernest Csuka in his 80s.  There are
ways of mounting and dismounting that don't require the flexibility and
agility of a rope-dancer, you know.

headquarters. Mark is building it up today (and was kind enough to

You do not have to be an old guy to ride a mixte. They just are kind
of sissy to some guys, but only here in America. In europe you see
LOTS of young and old guys on em. My wife has one and it has a
different ride sort of, maybe its in my head, but I love em and would
have one if I lived in Europe, or if I wasnt already happy with what I
got. I am a monogamous bike owner, not a polygamous bike owner like
you rich guys, so I am happy for what I have.

I will to admit that I didnt get the LARGE SIZE, when I read it, and
that will definatley thin the herd.
But they are really nice Japanese frames and the color is nice.

about 3->3.5 hours. I'm going up that way in the next couple of weeks
and I hope to be able to drop by. However, as far as I know
Renaissance carries only the sam and betty, both fine bikes, but their
sizing is a good bit different than the hilsen.

Mid-40s.

When my dad retired from his medical practice in his late 60s he
started restoring houses with my younger brother.  So it is possible
genetics favor me.  But you never know when an accident or disease or
something could come along.

For less than one thousand, a lovely JB painted Wilbury would be nice
insurance.  Any more than that, I am fine taking a chance on keeping
my diamond frames.

Probably not so much the Wilbury, which is very well designed and
executed, but mixtes tend to flex more than diamond frames.  I expect
the Wilbury has a weight penalty.

But it is very beautiful.  The lines are like sculpture.  The JB paint
job really pulls out the lug and frame details.

I have a camping bike, a city bike, and a 650B (rando style, I
suppose, but I do not ride organized rando or brevet) road bike on the
way.  Otherwise, I have no issues riding a mixte.

Yes, death could be just around the corner.  But assuming you don't kick
the bucket or become so incapacitated you can't ride a bike, there's no
reason to believe that in my god, a quarter of a century, you'll become
so unfit you won't be able to get on a diamond frame.

I'm not entirely sure other than there was a long list of folks ahead
of me. Curt and Mark were both building at the time I placed the order
but after Curt stopped building Rivs I imagine the entire queue fell
on Mark's shoulders. He works these in around his own frames. To be
fair, Grant was quite clear about customs not being for those who
couldn't afford to wait.

Once I have it, the wait will be the furthest thing from my mind. At
least it wasn't a Vanilla. :)

[RBW] Traveling to DC and Richmond

My affable friend Weasel and I are Amtraking with bikes to DC and will
be in town Feb 22-23 before riding down to Richmond for NAHBS. Neither
of us are riding Rivendells, but I will be on a Toyo-built frame, and
my friend is planning to ride his stainless Kabuki. Anyway, I'm hoping
to connect with some of you fine folks in that area during our visit.

Last Friday I bought a Toyo 63cm. While in the house of Riv, I looked
at a 61cm from Waterford. In addition to the different color, the
Waterford-made AHH has a nicer rear dropout, stamped "Waterford".
Other than that, they are practically identical, this according to
Kevin.

I recall waiting a similar length of time for my All-Rounder (I
believe during a transition from Waterford to Joe Stark).  11 years
later I'm still enjoying the bike.

Im a little confused by the size, if you read the bottom it says from
center of BB to the tip of the lug on the seatpost is 59cm, so maybe
its really a 58cm. They never made a 58cm, but also it says the theo
toptube is a 56 which would make it smaller than a 58cm. Any thoughts?

BTW, the 56 with larger tires straddles more like a 58.  So if you
think the 61 would be close, with big tires it would be even closer.

Your other idea sounds good.  It's sort of what I've done.  Although
am using the Hillborne instead of the AHH.

I'll be up there from durham, nc for the show. Not sure if I'll have a
bike with me or not - it really depends on how ridiculous the weather
ends up being that weekend.

Well mid-feb has a way of being 'odd'.

Normally we have one weekend in mid feb where the temp spikes to about
60-70F and is clear and STUNNING.

If the planets align it would be PERFECT for nahbs to have weather like that.

It's also possible it will be sleeting. :)

Joel, you're right - "You never know when an accident or disease or
something could come along."  I'm 64, and have ridden a Wilbury for a number
of miles. Three and a half years ago I was involved in a freak accident in
which I fell off a ravine and shattered my shoulder and pelvis.  Three
surgeries later I now have a new hip, but the nerve in my left leg is hosed
up and I'm left with a leg that feels numb all the time and a foot with
limited control.  I also wear an orthotic device to keep my foot from
dropping.  I've loved riding bikes, and I didn't want the accident to stop
me from riding.  I bought a Wilbury because it was very difficult for me to
swing my leg over the top tube.  The Wilbury is a fine riding bike, and it's
served its purpose well.  Now that my leg has gotten stronger I'm able to
ride my other nice bikes, but starting off is still a bit of a challenge.
Today I start off my rides with my bike next to a curb - it makes the top
tube about 6-8 inches lower which makes taking off a lot easier.  I gave my
daughter my Wilbury, but at times I miss the ride of that beautiful bike.

I'm not Brad but have a similar story 

. 

I got my custom in November of 2008. My wait time was a bit more that 3 yrs. 

I too was in the same Curt/Mark N builder transition that Brad was. 

Since I had a Romulus to ride during the wait time it was no big deal to me. 



I totally love my Riv Custom.

I'm not entirely sure other than there was a long list of folks ahead of me. 
Curt and Mark were both building at the time I placed the order but after Curt 
stopped building Rivs I imagine the entire queue fell on Mark's shoulders. He 
works these in around his own frames. To be fair, Grant was quite clear about 
customs not being for those who couldn't afford to wait. Once I have it, the 
wait will be the furthest thing from my mind. At least it wasn't a Vanilla. :)

My wife's Glorius is a
56cm and measures to 57cm at the top of the lug point.

I love step-through frames.  You don't have to "need" one in order to enjoy
them.  Hopping on and going just seems easier on a step through.  I steal
hers as often as possible!

I'm looking closely at the one on ebaby, but know the fun doesn't start till
the last 12 seconds of the auction... :-)
