Are you sure it's not gone behind your other windows? This is what seems to
happen by default on OS X with matplotlib.

Subject: [python-uk] Matplotlib show() doesn't display on OS X

I ran this simple script taken from a book:

#!/usr/bin/env python3

import matplotlib.pyplot as plt

squares = [1, 4, 9, 16, 25]
plt.plot(squares)
plt.show()

... but although the script runs without error it doesn't display
anything, doesn't terminate and is unresponsive to either Ctrl+C or Ctrl+D.

As people have mentioned, the consensus that I've seen is that posting a
job ad is fine so long as it's not recruiter spam.

Of course, recruiters advertising for a specific job with an appropriate
level of detail about the job in question (location, salary, expectation
of role, desired skills and experience, information about what the
company does) is also fine.

What is recruiter spam? How about, "exciting opportunity for Python
ninja in green-field project at one of London's most exciting employers"
is, IMHO, NOT welcome. It's just meaningless noise and probably
recruitment phishing.

Hope this helps,

N.

It's also worth looking at circleci and buildbot, where the latter is run

Personally, I've preferred Circle over Travis purely on the basis that you can
SSH into the build, which makes things much easier if you want to diagnose why
something hasn't worked.

It wasn't spam. We have discussed several times whether recruitment messages
are welcome here. To date, we've not come to any consensus that they are not.

This is rudeness bordering on abuse, and it's definitely not acceptable on this
email list.

[python-uk] Southampton Python User Group - Talk on Thursday 2nd March

2017-02-22 Thread Pepper R .
Hi all,

The next Southampton Python User Group meeting will be next Thursday with a
talk about using Cython to increase Python code performance.

When: 6pm, Thursday 2nd March
Where: Room 1007, Building 58, University of
Southampton.

I’ll talk about using Cython, and will give a quick overview of features,
potential
pitfalls and will show a few real world examples of how it can make a
big difference, particularly in scientific applications.

After the talk there will be a chance to give 5 minute lightning talks
- the suggested theme next week is on code performance in Python –
some suggested ideas could be:

· The use of Numba to speed up code

· Multiprocessing module

If you'd like to give a brief talk, please let me know!

Refreshments will be provided, and we'll go to a nearby pub afterwards
for drinks and food.

Best wishes,

Ryan
-

Cython is a superset of the Python language, aiming to provide greater
performance in the CPython implementation of the language. This is achieved by
user given type annotations, and explicit disabling of language features in
order to provide greater speed where this is critical in applications. Code is
transformed using the Cython compiler, which generates C code; this is then
compiled with a C compiler into a library, which can then be imported by Python
as with any other module. In addition, C (and in simple cases C++) code can be
used directly from Cython through the use of source and header files; this is
particularly useful in scientific computing when wanting to call functions from
an external library.

In this talk I'll give a quick overview of the features, common use cases,
potential pitfalls and show a few real-world type examples.
