I'm really excited to be joining Puppet Labs as the new Community Manager. My first day at Puppet Labs was at PuppetConf, which was both awesome and a bit surreal at the same time. I'm now in day 5, and I think I'm already behind. Here is a little background to help you understand why I'm crazy enough to want to be an open source community manager. I've been working with open source communities mostly full-time for the past 12 years, and I've been using open source software since the early 90's. I've been a UNIX sys admin, a programmer, a program manager, a market researcher and more. I've managed quite a few open source communities over the past few years, including Tizen and MeeGo while working in Intel's Open Source Technology Center, Openfire at Jive Software, etc. I also have a BS in Computer Science and an MBA, which just proves that I'm one of those weird people who likes to take classes and hang out at Universities. On a personal note, I ... * drink too much green tea * am a data / metrics geek * actually enjoy running and lifting weights * wrote 2 books: one on community and a vegan cookbook * read a lot of science fiction / fantasy (see my website for a list) > > Dawn will initially be lurking and getting to know you all. As I mentioned during PuppetConf, feel free to let me me know * what you love about the Puppet Community (I'll try not to screw it up) * what you don't like (I'll try to fix it) * when someone isn't responding (I can glare at the right person until we reply to pull requests, bugs or other neglected bits) You can find me here on the mailing lists or via: * email: d...@puppetlabs.com * Twitter and other sites: @geekygirldawn * IRC: DawnFoster * Website: http://fastwonderblog.com Oh, and I can also be a little long-winded (fair warning). [Puppet Users] Puppet Meetup at LinuxCon Europe: Nov 5 in Barcelona
We are having an informal Puppet Meetup at LinuxCon Europe in Barcelona on Monday, November 5 at 7:15pm. You don't need to be attending LinuxCon to join us at the meetup. I will be attending LinuxCon and hosting the meetup. The format is very informal. We won't have any presentations or speakers, just a few of us at a bar to have a couple of drinks and chat about Puppet. We're still working on finding a place to hold the meetup, but it will be in or near Hotel Fira Palace (LinuxCon venue) right after the scheduled evening LinuxCon event on Monday night. Please RSVP now if you want to attend to help us plan for the number of attendees and a venue: http://puppetmeetupbarcelona.eventbrite.com/ We'll send an update to RSVP'ed attendees with the meetup location when we have selected a place to have it. Note: I will also be presenting about open source metrics (using some examples from the Puppet Community) on Nov 5 at 1:20pm as part of LinuxCon Europe for anyone who wants to attend my session as well. [Puppet Users] Puppet Community Metrics
Last month, we started publicly posting monthly community metrics reports with all kinds of interesting information about the Puppet Community. I also realized that I did a couple of blog posts about this, but I had not posted it here on the mailing list for your reading pleasure. The latest version of the metrics can be found here: http://puppetlabs.com/community/metrics/ Here is a quick summary of the October edition of the metrics for your reading pleasure, but you can also download the full October metrics report: http://puppetlabs.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/Metrics-Oct-2012.pdf October Metrics Summary: 4864 members and 1249 messages in Puppet-Users 899 members and 157 messages in Puppet-Dev 916 nicks on #puppet IRC channel 1731 Puppet Forge users and 577 modules 3526 Redmine accounts 399 forks / 1014 watchers of Puppet Top 5 participants (by number of lines posted) in the #Puppet IRC channel: * Volcane * lavaman * FriedBob * fubada * bubu\a You can see the list of the top 20 people in the full report for October. New this month, I’ve started gathering the top participants in each of our community mailing lists. I am including the top 5 contributors in the Puppet-Users mailing list, but you can see the full report for the top users in Puppet-Dev and Puppet-Razor. Top 5 participants (by number of messages / replies posted) in the Puppet-Users list: * jcbollinger * Jeff McCune * Josh Cooper * Jakov Sosic * Worker Bee We’re also continuing to do a better job of merging code and keeping the number of pull requests low in Puppet, at least compared to some past months. We can always do a better job of more quickly merging pull requests, but we’re continuing to work on improving this by focusing some time on this activity. See October report for graph. We also know that we have way too many outstanding issues in Redmine. Many of these issues are in various limbo states, and they just need people to go through and triage them. We’re working on a way to better manage this process and make it easy for community contributors to help with the triage process. We hope to have this ready in the next couple of weeks. See October report for graph. The full metrics report for October has several other charts that I didn’t talk about here along with other details if you want to see more: http://puppetlabs.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/Metrics-Oct-2012.pdf This month, I added some new data for contributions to our mailing lists, and I also hope to be adding additional details over the coming months. If there is additional data you’d like to see, let me know, and I’ll do what I can to get it included. [Puppet Users] New Q&A Site to Ask Puppet Questions
Today, we are launching the beta version of a new question and answer site where you can ask any Puppet questions or provide answers for questions from other Puppet users and developers. The idea is to give you another way to ask questions if you aren’t a fan of mailing lists or IRC. It’s similar to a forum, but is more like Stack Overflow. You can get a good feel for the type of questions people are asking by visiting the Ask site now: https://ask.puppetlabs.com. With the focus on asking questions, it is a little harder for people to digress into endless debates. However, the main benefit is that great answers and knowledge live on, and it gives us a better place to point people for good answers than mailing list archives. Because this Q&A site lives on puppetlabs.com, you can easily do a google search with site:puppetlabs.com along with your query to find answers to questions along with relevant documentation and other information all in the same location. We are still working through a few last bugs, and I expect that you will find a few bugs, too. We have a project in the bug tracker where you can see existing bugs, file new bugs or suggest improvements: https://projects.puppetlabs.com/projects/ask/issues Visit ask.puppetlabs.com to get started. Please ask your questions, answer some existing questions, file bugs to let us know what isn’t working, and be patient while we fix your bugs :) If you have any questions or concerns about the new Q&A site for Puppet, please let me know. No problem at all. Many of us who have been using mailing lists forever are perfectly comfortable with them. I like mailing lists, since I can filter things coming in and quickly scan through them to find the important things that I want to respond to. There are others who really don't like email, are intimidated by it, or who just want something different. Many of those people would prefer to use something else. Unfortunately, the Google Groups web interface isn't a great choice, either. It's more forum like, but can be painful to use. The idea is that the people who like the mailing lists will continue to ask and answer questions here. The mailing lists will never go away - in my opinion, they are the basis for most technical communities, especially open source communities. The Ask Q&A site just gives those people who prefer something more like stack overflow (with voting and other interactivity) also have a place where they can feel more comfortable asking questions. On the one hand, I hate fragmenting the community by introducing yet another site, but I also want everyone to feel comfortable asking and answering questions. Hopefully, the Ask Q&A site will be a place where people can also get great answers to questions. [Puppet Users] New Trivial Patch Exemption Policy for open source contributions
I wanted to make sure that everyone was aware of a slight change we've made to the process for open source contributions. For *trivial* contributions, we are no longer requiring a Contributor License Agreement (CLA). Note that for most contributions a CLA signature is still required. I'm also working on making the overall CLA process easier, but that will take a little more time to overhaul. You can see more about our definition of trivial and how to use the process here: http://docs.puppetlabs.com/community/trivial_patch_exemption.html Hopefully, this will make it easier for people to make small contributions to our projects. Again, remember that this is only for trivial contributions. Most contributions will still require a CLA. See the link above for exactly what can / cannot be considered trivial. We will be updating our contributing.md files soon to include this information. If you are unfamiliar with our contribution process, you can get more information and links to our CLA from the Puppet contributing.md file: https://github.com/puppetlabs/puppet/blob/master/CONTRIBUTING.md For any questions about the process, ping me, and I'm happy to answer them. [Puppet Users] Attend or Present at Upcoming Puppet Camps!
I wanted to let everyone know that we have a bunch of upcoming Puppet Camps. Many of them have open CFPs, and we are still looking for people to present. We are looking for sessions that range from how-to information for beginners to advanced topics for experts and everything in between. Case studies with details about how you used Puppet to solve a problem in your environment would also be great sessions. [Puppet Users] Interested in Presenting at or Attending Upcoming Puppet Camps?
We've already had quite a few Puppet Camps this year, but we have a few more on the schedule before we take a break for the summer and get ready for PuppetConf on August 22 and 23 (http://puppetconf.com/)! First of all, we have a few Puppet Camps coming up where we are actively looking for speakers. We're looking for talks on technologies and talks about how you use Puppet in your organization (what you've learned). We don't always get a lot of presentation submissions, so your chances of getting accepted are good. Since most Puppet Camps are 100-200 people, it's also a great way to test out a presentation that you are thinking of doing about Puppet at a larger conference. We need talks for ... Puppet Dashboard hasn't really been deprecated. Puppet Labs is less focused on it, but Aaron Stone (aka sodabrew) has picked up a big chunk of the maintenance, and we're still regularly releasing updates. Longer term, we're working on some replacement technologies, but if Dashboard meets your needs now, it's fine to keep using it. Agreed! As a reminder for everyone, we have some community guidelines designed to keep the Puppet Community awesome: https://docs.puppetlabs.com/community/community_guidelines.html Sharing dumps of our certification exam answers would be against these guidelines, since the answers are considered private / proprietary. This goes against the "keep it legal" section. More fundamentally, we think that sharing certification exam answers isn't good for the community. For our certification to be meaningful and well-respected, we have to make sure that only the people with a solid working knowledge of Puppet best practices can pass the exam. Sharing exam answers to help people pass the exam wouldn't be fair to the other people who have become certified based solely on their hard work learning Puppet. If we all work together in the community to make sure that only the people who are knowledgeable about Puppet become certified, then the certification will be more meaningful to hiring managers and others who want to use our certifications as an indicator of Puppet skills. [Puppet Users] Talk proposals, Puppet Contributor Summit and more
I wanted to let everyone know about some upcoming events where we need contributions from the Puppet community. Do you contribute to Puppet core projects, Forge modules or other Puppet community projects? If so, you should join us in Ghent, Belgium on February 4 for the 3rd Puppet Contributor Summit: http://contributorsummitfeb2015.eventbrite.com/ The Puppet Contributor Summit is being held the day after ConfigManagmentCamp, which is right after FOSDEM. ConfigManagementCamp has a Puppet room, and FOSDEM has a bunch of devrooms, including one for configuration management and another for testing / automation. I'm one of the organizers for both of the config management events, and we're looking for Puppet talks along with other topics. http://cfgmgmtcamp.eu/#contributions If you can't travel to Belgium, you should join us for our online #puppethack contributor event over IRC on December 4 or at one of our regular pull request triage hangouts. https://puppetlabs.com/community/contributor-events We have Call for Proposals (CFPs) open for Puppet Camps in Portland, Amsterdam, LA (SCALE), Phoenix, Denver, Austin, and Berlin (OSDC). I would love to see more talk proposals: https://puppetlabs.com/community/puppet-camp#2465 Beginner, intermediate or advanced: * FOSDEM, ConfigManagementCamp, Puppet Contributor summit and #puppethack are more for intermediate / advanced Puppet users. If you've been using Puppet for a while or want to propose talks about advanced topics, these are the events for you. * Puppet Camps tend to have a lot of beginners in the audience, so talks about getting started with some aspect of Puppet or other beginner topics for talk proposals are encouraged! If you are a beginner, you should attend a camp, and if you are a more intermediate / advanced user, submit a talk proposal. More details about all of these topics can be found in my blog post: https://puppetlabs.com/blog/speak-puppet-camp-attend-puppet-contributor-summit Regards, Dawn Foster Director of Community http://puppetlabs.com/community -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Puppet Users" group.
