Change your kernel line to be the following:

kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.4.20custom ro root=/dev/hdX

-X is your hard drive along with partition number for
"/"

The cool colors... I'm actually just curious to know
what RH had replaced the nasty netcfg with. After
working with neat, I have found that it is really
unstable and likes to crash. So, you aren't missing
much.
