This would indicate that dhclient wasn't running when you issued the
command or conceivably you have some problem with the permissions in
/var/run.

Was the interface up when you issued the command?

Check with "ps" to see if dhclient is running. If it's not, bring
up eth0, check that dhclient is running, then issue the "dhclient -r"
which should release the lease and cause dhclient to terminate.

I had a similar problem in psyche. "ntpdate" worked fine, but "ntpd"
failed to synchronize and didn't log any problems in the "messages" file.
I turned off "authenticate" which didn't help. Commenting out the
"multicast" line restored proper operation for me.

It's in /sbin/service. If you're LOGGED IN as root, it should be in your
path. Note that "su" doesn't give you root's path; you have to do
"su -". If you just did plain "su", you can give the whole path
as "/sbin/service".

Is there a firewall involved that's blocking port 22 on the server or
between the two machines in question?

Are you using hosts.deny/hosts.allow? If so, are they allowing connection
from the putty machine in question?

Mozilla in psyche is excruciatingly slow

2002-12-17 Thread Pete Peterson

Mozilla runs painfully slowly on my RH 8.0 machine. Clicking on a link
takes 30-40 seconds to bring up the new page. During this time, "top"
shows mozilla using 96% CPU time.

The same experiment with konqueror or galeon brings up the page in about
one second.

Has anyone encountered this problem and found a solution? Any suggestions
would be welcome.

I haven't figured out how to make java, javascript and a couple plugins work
with galeon or konqueror, so I'm not anxious to switch browsers.
Unfortunately, I *need* java/javascript to use some of our internal web
pages.

This copy had been running for about a day. I restarted it some
time yesterday to see if that would help the speed; it didn't.

The memory cache was set to 4096 KB and the disk cache was set
at 5 KB. Clearing the caches didn't appear to help, nor
did setting them to memory = 1024 KB and disk = 4096 KB and
then clearing them again.

Any other insights?

Well, first of all Pan is a newsreader and it comes with 8.0.
If it's not installed, just install it from the CD or get the
latest version from http://pan.rebelbase.com. The latest
stable version is 0.13.2 and the latest beta is 0.13.2.92.

When you do "rpm -e", you just want to use the package name
as opposed to the name of the rpm file. If there's just one
version installed, then "rpm -e opera" should get rid of it.
The same thing is true if you're querying installed packages.
The only time you specify the rpm file is when you're installing
a package or querying the rpm file:
   rpm -Uvh foo.rpm
   rpm -q foo
   rpm -qi foo
   rpm -qip foo.rpm

If you have some version installed, rpm -ivh will install the new
version without removing the old one; rpm -Uvh will remove
the old one and install the new one.

Did you get an 8.0 version of opera? If you want to install
the static version, you should be able to do:
   rpm -e opera
   rpm -Uvh opera-6.11-20021129.1-static-qt.i386.rpm

Thanks for the suggestions...

I don't THINK there's a networking problem; everything else
seems normal and it's hard to imagine why a networking
problem would affect mozilla and not konqueror or galeon.

I did have multiple instances of mozilla, but they were using
different profiles, so they weren't sharing cache/configuration
directories. One of them was running through an ssh session from
home. That session got disconnected overnight and now this
morning I can't reproduce the problem, even when I run another
instance of mozilla through a remote ssh connection (from the
Sparc/Solaris machine in my office). At the moment, mozilla
is noticeably slower than galeon or konqueror, but not
painfully slow. I'll check further when the problem recurs.

"service ntpd restart" should do it. Note that if the the time is too
far off, nptd can't resync. You should make sure you list the time
servers in /etc/ntp/step-tickers. If you do that, the startup code
will use ntpdate to set the time correctly before attempting to start
the daemon. Normally this matters only at bootup time, since once
the daemon is running properly, it will keep time synchronized properly.

In the step-tickers file, you can just list the servers, separateed
by spaces, e.g.:
server1 server2 server3

8.0 Installation -- Graphical Network Configuration Broken

2002-10-01 Thread Pete Peterson
I selected custom/graphical install.

Set up partitions ans mount points OK.

Got to "Network Configuration".

  Selected eth0 & did "Edit"
Specified "Active on Boot", no DHCP,
  Specified IP and NetMask
  Did "OK"

At this point, I tried to enter the host name and "Miscellaneous Settings",
but the mouse was not active in anything but the top pane of that window.
I could toggle the "Active on Boot" checkbox and I could activate the
"Edit" button, but could not enter the hostname, gateway or DNS servers.
I also could not toggle the "Set the hostname" radio buttons at this
point.

I checked the MD5 sums on the CDs *and* did media check on discs 1-3.

Any ideas what's going on here?

I accidentally stumbled on a "fix" for this. I happened to hit the
right-hand mouse button, which brought up a menu. When I released the
button, the mouse behavior returned to normal again and I was able to enter
the hostname, gateway and DNS information.

Has anyone else encountered this? Any explanation?

Well, if it wants "port:protocol", you want "123:udp" or "ntp:udp" if
it recognizes names. You have interchanged the port (123/ntp) and the
protocol (udp).
