I didn't see the start of this thread, so sorry if this has already been 
suggested. I add a "ide0=ata66" to my boot line in grub.conf. At boot time, I 
get this:

VP_IDE: VIA vt82c686b (rev 40) IDE UDMA100 controller on pci00:07.1
VP_IDE: ATA-66/100 forced bit set (WARNING)!!

but it works for me.
