X Server for NT

2003-01-23 Thread Listman
I have an X Server for NT installed but I am unable to display my RH 8.0
Window Manager KDE. What do I have to set to query the ip address and
display the Linux machine remotely?

TIA
Mke

User groups

2003-02-01 Thread Listman
When I create a new user, by default the user belongs to a group of the same
name. Why is this? It seems to me that having a group for every single
user is overkill. Id like to have all users belong to a 'users' group and
then more priviledged users belong to an 'admin type group'.

My question is, can I delete the user groups that have the same name us
users? Thanks in advance.

RE: User groups

2003-02-01 Thread Listman
Thanks Jay

I actually did delete the 'mike' group and assigned the groups users and
cvsusers to mike. Fortunately Im the only user now so its not a big deal if
I have to su to root to change ownership of my own files. In the future Ill
follow your advice. Thanks again for the reassurance.

Mike

It's for securty, and yes it probably is a little overkill.

Read the man page for 'adduser'. Note the -g and -G options.

That's going to be a pain.
You're going to have the change groups for the files already created. And
not all are in $HOME. ie /var/spool/mail

You said, "When I create a new user..."
You mean "a" user as in one user?
Do the easy thing. Just delete the user, and re-create it with the proper
-g and -G options.

FAR easier!

RE: samba printer & CUPS (was Re: redhat-config-printer: I can'tconfigure a working printer!)

2003-02-20 Thread Listman
What are the appropriate permissions for the spool dir? Im interested in
allowing any person on the network to print to a SAMBA printer regardless if
they have a linux account or not?

i believe that the print job can not be written in the spool dir. Not enough
privileges.

latitude suspend

2002-10-13 Thread listman
has any one been successful at getting x to come back up after going to
suspend/sleep mode. I don't have a problem hitting ctl+alt+F1 but it would
be nice to just close the thing.

RE: media players

2002-10-15 Thread listman
you still need to install other programs and by using
redhat-config-packages it's pretty easy to see what you need. Some time
rpms are just easier than ./configure make make install and a lot less
time consuming. I think it really has to do with what your are used to.
