problem with real audio player

2003-01-30 Thread Graeme Jensen
I don't know why but I haven't been able to play anything on the real
player lately. It's worked fine until now. I haven't downloaded
anything so I don't think it's a compatibility problem or anything like
that. The right windows pop up and the real player appears and then an
error message appears saying "General error an error occured " there are
two buttons at the bottom of the box saying "ok " and "more info" No
matter which is pressed they disappear.
Any help appreciated.

Keyboard beeping problem (RH 8.0)

2003-02-12 Thread Graeme Jensen
I'm running RH8.0 and have had a recurring problem with the keyboard.
For some reason despite being able to login ok, when I log in as a
certain user the keyboard bleeps whenever a key is pressed. I can type
but I have no hold the key for almost a full two seconds for a letter to
appear on the screen. I've had this problem before and it was solved
somehow by logging out and then back in again. This hasn't solved the
problem this time however.

Re: Japanese in Evolution 1.2.2 & OpenOffice on RH8.0

2003-02-27 Thread Graeme Jensen
Not sure what your problems are but did you check if you have the right
packages installed? I chose Japanese as the default Language and have
no problems logging in and having an all Japanese environment though I
hardly ever use it. About open office though, you need to choose the
right Japanese font by clicking on the mouse otherwise the kanji will
disappear after you've typed it.

You could also check the bashrc file and see what the language settings
are. I've put the following

export LANG=ja_JP; export XMODIFIERS="@im=kinput2";
export LC_MESSAGES=en_us; exec kinput2-canna&

I don't need menus in Japanese, just the ability to type in Japanese.
The above script serves me fine.

Check out the Tokyo Linux User Group archives & links for more info

Thanks for the help, but I'm not sure which file system I should repair.

As for the fsck -y {/file/system} option you suggest, the computer says to
run fsck manually without options

install requirements for 8.0

The bug is known:

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=75138

Always do a quick search on bugzilla when possible (though you may find
that hard without a panel to launch apps :-)

From the bugz web page:

Someone suggested mentioning how to recover from this:
Go to a virtual console (Ctrl+Alt+F1) or ssh in to the machine,
move ~/.gconf/apps/panel to ~/.old-panel-config or something,
and then reconfigure the panel (not putting the tray applet on
the vertical panel)

Note that, even though the panel is dead, you can always get to a shell in
gnome by right-clicking on the desktop background and launching a
gnome-terminal from the menu.

cheers,
 denice

That could be a memory problem. I tried a number of times to get

Do you have enough memory?  I had troubles installing

Saving currnet configuration to floppy

2002-12-13 Thread Graeme Jensen
I've just installed RH8.0 and everything seems to be going fine. I've
had troubles in the past after upgrading 7.2 using the up2date command.
Last time it seemed to corrupt the database and I had to reinstall, or
fcsk the disk, something I had no idea about. I'm thinking of trying
the up2date command again but am afraid of having the same thing
happen. It seems that just when I get the realplayer installed and
tweak my machine to run how I want it something happens. Anyway, how do
save the current configuration to a floppy so I can get my current
configuration back in case something goes wrong.

That may not be what you need but try it and see what happens.
Chances are that some of the menus and other headers won't appear
properly. It's a KDE problem. Some of the software just isn't designed
to be used in the Japanese user environment, and so isn't encoded for
Japanese. However, this doesn't seem to be a problem with Bluecurve
from what I can tell.

What you call kanji gibberish is referred to as "Mojibake"
It's a common problem using Japanese in Linux. wrong language encoding
is what causes it. I don't know in what you want to use Japanese for,
but to properly display email for example, you need to encode the body
of the text as well as the header to get all the mail to appear properly
in Japanese.
Just to

Re: Keyboard layout question

Maybe as suggested, you could do some fiddling around and design a
keyboard map to meet your needs, or try adding keyboard maps to the
toolbar. This will place a button at the toolbar which you can click on
to change keyboard maps.
