XFree86 Problem
Hello All, I encountered a problem with XFree86, the details of which follow. Please note that although I've come a way since I first started using Linux, I am still reasonably "green" and have never encountered this problem before, so I need explicit instructions on how to solve this if anyone knows how. The files attached are the XFree86.0.log file (obviously) and the specific information on my computer (i.e. video chipset, etc.) The events leading up to the problem are thus (please pardon the length of this post, but I surmise that the more detail I give, the easier it will be for someone to determine what happened and how to get it corrected): From installation CD's, I installed Red Hat 9.0 on a computer configured to dual-boot with Windows '98 SE. The kernel version on these CD's is 2.4.20-8. Once the installation was complete, I added the following software: OpenOffice.org, Mozilla 1.4 (final), the JRE plug-in and Acrobat Reader. These files I downloaded into Windows and then transferred to my Linux partition by mounting the vfat partition because I didn't have a working modem in Linux. After this, I installed the Linuxant modem driver. At this point everything worked fine. I was able to dial-up using kppp and connect to the internet. At this juncture, I connected to the internet and ran Red Hat's up2date service (demo account). There were a lot of packages that needed to be updated and it took 10 hours to download everything by modem. Once this was complete, I rebooted the computer and everything was still working. Then, I tried connecting to the internet, but the modem wouldn't work - this was because the modem driver compiles with the version of the kernel being used. Since the modem driver was in rpm format, I removed it using rpm -e and reinstalled it with the new kernel version 2.4.20-19.9 which was the updated kernel version installed from running up2date. I was then able to connect to the internet again. This is where the problem starts. The next time I booted the computer (I boot in text mode, rather than having x start automatically because, if something happens like it did once before, I can at least get at my files and transfer them to my Windows mount), the boot process went okay, but when I tried to start x, x wouldn't start. I got the error message that it couldn't locate the module pcidata. I am aware that the file libpcidata.a is supposed to by located in /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/ but it is now gone from my computer. Earlier today after browsing on XFree86.org, I searched for libpcidata.a and found a link where I could download the file. I downloaded it in Windows and transferred it to my Linux partition, and rebooted the computer. I still got the message that the module pcidata couldn't be located. I also got an additional message (not included in the log file attached) something about "minor version (7) being newer that system version (6)". All I want to do is put the file libpcidata.a back on my computer in the easiest way possible. Can someone provide direction here? Thanks in advance and regards to all. What does 'rpm -V XFree86' return? For that matter, what does 'rpm -q XFree86' return? You may be able to use up2date-nox to re-install the XFree86 package if The XFree86 package was damaged. How it got damaged, I don't know because I didn't delete anything. However, on another list, I was told that most people who had tried to reinstall XFree86 because of a module problem had not success. I was chicken to re-install thinking that something that had been updated using up2date would get "broken". However, I bit the bullet, reinstalled XFree86 using the --force switch and the missing module files were put back in /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/ and I was able to start X again. Problem resolved. Thanks. Colleen it's damaged. -- Psyche-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] https://www.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/psyche-list
Re: FAT32 Support is Still Alpha
Message: 4 From: Greg Goldstein <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Fat32 support is still ALPHA Date: Sat, 23 Aug 2003 09:49:49 +0200 Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] I recently installed RH8.0 on my Dell Inspiron 2500 laptop, which is dual boot and I have 2 DOS drives mounted. I get this message on boot-up: checking filesystems - Fat32 support is still ALPHA. Has anyone experience with this message, are there ever any bad effects of alpha support? Greg I run RH 9.0 on a dual-boot Dell Optiplex GX100 and I get this message on boot all the time. It, of course, has to do with your machine being configured to mount a DOS or vfat partion while in Linux. I have had NO problems with this. I have to mount my Windows partition when I want to use it (I didn't want it to be mounted all the time), but I have sent many e-mails with attachments that gotten from my Windows mount. I have also retrieved graphic files and text files that I've saved in Linux as well as copied files to my Windows mount and back to Linux. I've even done the unforgivable, and forgotten to unmount the partition, but have not encountered any problems, but in this latter situation, I was lucky - it could have resulted in file corruption regardless of whether or not it was a Windows mount or not. This by no means indicates that I'm an expert on this subject, but I have encountered no problems. Flash Player Problem
Hello All, I'm trying to get the Macromedia Flash Player installed. I have already read the documentation on the http://plugin.mozdev.org page and also the readme file that was part of the tarball for this plugin. The http://plugin.mozdev.org page said to extract the tarball and put the libflashplayer.so and the flashplayer.xpt file in the /usr/local/mozilla/plugins/ directory. I did this. I also tried putting an additional copy of both these files in the /usr/local/mozilla/components/ directory. In either case, the plugin is NOT recognized by the browser - i.e. isn't listed in my list of plugins. I'm running Mozilla 1.4 (Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.4) Gecko/20030624) on Redhat 9 with kernel 2.4.20-19.9. If it makes any difference, besides the libnullplugin.so (the default plugin), I have the JRE plugin and the Adobe Acrobat plugin installed. They both work fine and show in my about:plugins list. The http://plugin.mozdev.org page also said that "Scripting Flash does NOT work with gcc3 builds of Mozilla", but I'm not sure what that means and my version of gcc is 3.2.2. Anyone who can offer assistance here has my gratitude. Also, pardon the verbal diarrhea here, but I wanted to give as much detail as I could in case anyone can help. Thanks. Re: Flash Player Problem
Thanks for the assistance here. I got the proverbial "slap on the wrist" ( VERY NICELY, I might add) for posting this message on the psyche list. My apologies. While, the particular problem was not specific to Red Hat 9, the solution is pertinent, so I will post it. The solution to my problem was getting a backward compatible version of libstdc++ because the version that I have on my system was a newer version than the one needed by the Flash player. I got the rpm for the correct version at rpmfind and once I installed it, the Flash Player worked fine. So, despite the fact that my problem was related to Mozilla, the solution was provided by Red Hat. Again, thanks for the assistance. Is thier any way to delete them even they are full. thankyou, zabtoo Use rm -Rf . The R is for recursive which deletes all subdirectories beneath the one that you specify and the f forces the deletion without prompting. Be careful here - make sure that you are sure that you have entered the directory name correctly. -- Psyche-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] https://www.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/psyche-list
