No sound in RH 8.0.

2003-07-16 Thread Panos Tsapralis (TELLAS)
Hello everybody,

I am trying to get sound out of my RH8 box. Although everything seems to
be O.K. (configuration via KDE Control Center seems to complete
successfully), I hear nothing from my speakers.

The following is an extract from my system's log (file
"/var/log/messages").

Jul 16 12:17:47 panos kernel: maestro3: version 1.22 built at 13:45:29 Sep 4 2002
Jul 16 12:17:47 panos kernel: PCI: Found IRQ 5 for device 00:0d.0
Jul 16 12:17:47 panos kernel: PCI: Sharing IRQ 5 with 00:0d.1
Jul 16 12:17:47 panos kernel: maestro3: Configuring ESS Maestro3(i) found at IO 0xF800
IRQ 5
Jul 16 12:17:47 panos kernel: maestro3: subvendor id: 0x000e103c
Jul 16 12:17:48 panos kernel: ac97_codec: AC97 Audio codec, id: 0x8384:0x7609
(SigmaTel STAC9721/23)
Jul 16 12:17:48 panos modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module sound-service-0-3

I suspect that the problem is related to the last line ("Can't locate
module..."). What am I doing wrong and how could I resolve this?

TIA,

XD2 is a just differet version of GNOME.

It will replace several Red Hat supplied packages. KDE should still be
OK, but most GNOME and GTK apps will be affected. Also, if you decide to
go back to Red Hat GNOME, it can be difficult to remove all the Ximian
packages and find the correct replacements. It may be better than
before, but I expect removal to still be problematic.

Well it does seem to be working.

(Apologies for replying to the list, but I have been having trouble
posting to lists and decided to use this opportunity for a test)

Re: No sound in RH 8.0.

2003-07-16 Thread Scot L. Harris
I have the same issue with my RH8 box. After investigating it I found
that the particular sound chips on the mother board are not supported by
RH. You may have the same issue. If so you should check out the ALSA
project. That appears to have support for the chip set on my mother
board but I have not taken time to install and test it. (I don't have
any compelling reason to get sound working on that box.)

Re: HomeDirectory and OpenLdap.

Hi all,
I have been using OpenLdap for Center Authentication. User's home
directory is presented by attribute "homeDirectory" in OpenLdap.
I have 2 problems:
1) When a user login Linux (ex: using ssh from remote host), the home
directory is not still created. So there is a error message:
"Could not chdir to home directory /home/$user: No such file or directory.
($user is real name of user).
Yes, if you want separate home dirs on each system, you could configure
/etc/pam.d/system-auth on the client system to user PAM's
"pam_mkhomdir.so" module.

2) I have 2 Linux Servers named A and B: A is running OpenLdap, B is not
but using OpenLdap in A server for Authentication. When I login to B
server, the home directory is in B. So, for a user, there are 2 home
directory: one in A and one in B. Could I use a network directory for
home directory?
Yes, you can export /home on A to B using either NFS or AFS:

http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/linux/RHL-9-Manual/custom-guide/
http://www.openafs.org/
I believe that both are available in the default configuration of Red
Hat Linux.
