printing and samba
I've got a RH8.0 server hosting a printer for a windows network. Although I can print fine, all users get a "Access Denied, Unable to Connect" message when attempting to view the queue. I am using an HP Laserjet 5, lpd. Printing works perfectly over the network through lpd from several linux machines in the network. My samba configuration: security = share printcap name = /etc/printcap load printers = yes use client driver = yes [printers] printable = yes browseable = no path = /var/spool/samba guest ok = yes writable = yes Does anybody have any solutions for this, or any hints ? Re: XFree86: how to make virtual resolution equal to Mode resolution?
Around about 16/01/2003 20:54, Patrick typed ... I normally drive my monitor on 1280x1024 but when I want to watch a movie I tune it down to 800x600 or 640x480. Now I have not figured out how to make the virtual screen the exact same size as the resolution defined in Modes in XF86Config. Anyone have a clue? Configs like the example below don't work. There still is a virtual screen around my monitor. How do I get rid of that virtual screen? Not quite certain what you're after, but I *think* what you want isn't directly possible. If it helps, and I've understood you correctly, I have a somewhat similar situation where I have a PC game for my son which I run under wine*; it wants an 800x600 display. I have set up a second "Screen" section in XF86Config with 800x600 res. Call it "small" or something. I then have a script which does something like: export DISPLAY=:1.0 X -screen small :1 & xpid=$! wine game kill -INT $xpid [That's OTTOMH, may not be quite right] I've linked that onto my desktop and run *it* to start the game. Guess you could do a similar thing with xine/ogle in there instead of wine. * - get this: it runs fine on Linux under wine, but I can't make it work when I'm natively booted into XP! -- [neil@fnx ~]# rm -f .signature [neil@fnx ~]# ls -l .signature ls: .signature: No such file or directory [neil@fnx ~]# exit -- Psyche-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] https://listman.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/psyche-list

I would like to put a link on the desktop or on the start menu to the application to change resolution. I've wanted to do this in the past, but not enough to fully follow it through. I don't think you can simplistically customise it, but my original thought were to predefine several 'Screen' sections, each with a diff. valid screen res., then customise the global gdm/xinit rc stuff to look for a ~/.x-res file & issue a custom 'X -screen xxx' before running gnome. Even if you write a nice GUI conf. front-end, it'd never work in 'real-tinme' though, as you'd have to log out and log in again to see the effect. -- [neil@fnx ~]# rm -f .signature [neil@fnx ~]# ls -l .signature ls: .signature: No such file or directory [neil@fnx ~]# exit -- Psyche-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] https://listman.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/psyche-list

RAID LargeDisks and UATA Serious Problems
Greetings I'm facing serious problems with a Raid partition on UATA133 bus. The box is a dual athlon MP with asus MB and REDHAT 8.0. The entire system except /home stand on two IBM 80Gb disks (on uata 100 bus) in Raid 1 with ext3. The /home partition stand on 3 Maxtor 120Gb "diamondmax plus 9" uata133 in Raid 5 with ext3. The system ran fine with 2.4.18-18.8.0smp official redhat kernel and the 3 Maxtor disks attached to and external Adaptec controller based on highpoint hpt370 chipset (note, i used just the ide bus functionality, since Raid was software). When i switched to 2.4.19 vanilla kernel i started to have problems, first of all it seem that the system with vanilla kernels can't deactivate swap in logical volume, leaving just an "invalid argument" error when i use swapoff command, but the real problem is that i started to experience regular FileSystem corrupitons (just on /home) with lots of data lost in reconstructions and fsck. At first i thought about problems with ext3 and compatibility between RH 8.0 and vanilla kernels (i also wrote about this on ext3-users list) but don't seem the case. Now i've replaced the highpoint card with a Maxtor pci card ata133 based on promise chipset 20269. I also tested vanilla 2.4.20 with ext3 patches. Theres nothing to do, problems persist, not only during high i/o throughtput, but also when i start to store large data on partition. I fell back to 2.4.18-18.8.0smp I didn't install the promise patch since it seem to me that is already included in rh kernel) without succes, it seem that when the data on disks reach about 30% of capacity troubles and corruptions manifests. I also thinking about basic design errors, since i have 3 uata 133 disks attached to a single pci controller all with dma access activated, somebody can confirm that this could represent a bandwith problem? When i try to use badblock or other hardware diagnostics tools based on badblock command the system freezes and at reboot i need to run fsck manually (with new data corruption and loss). Things are becoming nasty, since i would like to use reliable IDE system for low profile File Servers at work. I would like to ask if there are know issues about linux kernel, new Large ide disks and uata 100/133 bus, since it seem to me that many other people are experiencing problems like this. It seems to work better now, but I still get some odd behavior: 1.)The printer under windows continually reflects a "Deleting" status. 2.)The queue cannot be opened unless there are jobs 3.)Resume and pause do not work, only Cancel. 4.)When printing, there is not indication of pages printed or total pages. You can solve the dependencies more easily by using up2date. Pick a package that has lots of dependencies and install it first. up2date should bring in all the pieces it needs, including X and the gnome libraries. I think you're starting to realize why we like the Red Hat kernels. Red Hat does a *lot* of work testing and patching the kernels so that they work well in different configurations. Many patches don't appear in vanilla kernels until a future release. > When i switched to 2.4.19 vanilla kernel i started to have problems, first May I ask why you switched? Although the release number went up, you lost a lot of patches that Red Hat had applied. What problem were you trying to solve? My suggesting at this point would be to restore your system back to the way it was before you had problems. Depending on the level of corruption you've already created, you may need to re-init the disks and restore the files from backups. > Theres nothing to do, problems persist, not only during high i/o > throughtput, but also when i start to store large data on partition. > I fell back to 2.4.18-18.8.0smp I didn't install the promise patch since > it seem to me that is already included in rh kernel) without succes, it > seem that when the data on disks reach about 30% of capacity troubles and >corruptions You should also go back to your original controller. What is happening is that redhat-config-xfree86 doesn't have a way of telling which card it should use, therefore it can't auto-generate an XF86Config file in order to bring up the redhat-config-xfree86 GUI. What I wound up doing was installing Xconfigurator from 7.3 (this is really ugly because you will have to force some older packages that Xconfigurator needs to install). Since Xconfigurator has a text interface, you can then choose which card you want to use from the card list. After getting your XF86Config file working, you should then upgrade the packages that you had to downgrade in order to get Xconfigurator working. I know this is a really ugly workaround, but it's what worked for me. The fact that redhat-config-xfree86 does not have a text interface to fall back to in the event that it can't generate a file is a design shortcoming that I will address in the future (probably not in the next release, though). I'll attach the XF86Config file that works for my wife. I've replaced the section for the Radeon with one that should work for your card, but I can't say for sure that it will work. Also, you might need to change the monitor setting depending on what you have. You can look up your monitor settings in /usr/share/hwdata/MonitorsDB. If trying Xconfigurator doesn't work or if you don't feel comfortable doing all the package shuffling to get it to work, you might just try using this XF86Config file and see if it works. The drive is recognized by the system, but is not ready for some reason (kernel: hdd: status timeout: status=0xd0 { Busy } ) This is setup as a slave drive on the secondary IDE. Do you have a master on that channel? If not, make the CDRW a master drive, or if you can move it to the primary IDE, as a slave, that would rule out a bad secodary IDE channel. There is not specific driver, it should work with the generic ide-scsi cdrom driver. -- Psyche-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] https://listman.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/psyche-list

RE: Ipchains
Vasyl, That particular question belongs on the Valhalla-list which is for Redhat 7.3. I'm sure many of your questions could be answered in the Linux HOWTO documents. Take your time in learning about Linux, reading the background documentation on how the underlying system works. http://www.tldp.org/docs.html For example when I implemented Firewalls on my system I just used the Redhat lokkit utility to create my custom firewall rules for ipchains/iptables. Then I looked at the rules and tried to determine what firewall rules were implemented. I selected various services and added them to my firewall (using lokkit) and repeated the process until I started to understand how the rules worked. It took me a few weeks until I felt comfortable enough with ipchains and iptables to actually apply them to a production system. > --Luke > --Computer Science Sysadmin, MSU Bozeman > --admin(AT)cs.montana.edu 994-3931 > -Original Message- > From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] > On Behalf Of Vasyl Kenyuk > Sent: Friday, January 17, 2003 9:31 AM > To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > Subject: Ipchains > > Hi! > I'm using RedHat 7.3, and I would to allow only www input/output traffic > (no ftp, telnet, ssh, etc.). If you want to assign a specific IP address to a specific machine (regardless of hostname), then you need to configure your DHCP server to do that -- usually, it is based on the MAC address of the network card in the client machine. Depending on the DHCP server's capabilities, you can assign an IP address based on the hostname passed to it by the client. Example 1: I was my laptop to always have the IP 172.16.20.35. My PCMCIA card's MAC address is 04:00:A2:36:BA:F0. I need to tell my DHCP server to reserve the IP address 172.16.20.35 for MAC address 04:00:A2:36:BA:F0. In the DHCP server, I can also assign the hostname based on the same MAC address, or I can tell my laptop to use the hostname I want. Example 2: I have a DHCP server that allows me to assign an IP according the the client hostname. In this case, I configure my laptop with a specific hostname, Dedannshae. I tell my DHCP server to reserver the IP address 172.16.20.35 for hostname Dedannshae. When my laptop requests a DHCP configuration, it sends its hostname with the request. Then the DHCP server checks its list of known hostnames, and if it finds a match, it will give my laptop the reserved IP (and any other configuration specifics). There are other issues to be aware of if you really want name resolution to work correctly, but there's plenty of online documentation available. -- Dave Sherman MCSE, MCSA, CCNA "If we wanted you to understand it, we wouldn't call it code." signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part

As far as I remember I did this with Apache 1.3.x up until Psyche. (Only just got around to asking about this one). A snip of the config: DocumentRoot "/www/mycrap/Secure/" ServerName files.mydomain SSLEngine on SSLCipherSuite ALL:!ADH:!EXPORT56:RC4+RSA:+HIGH:+MEDIUM:+LOW:+SSLv2:+EXP:+eNULL SSLCertificateFile /conf/httpd/files.mydomain SSLCertificateKeyFile /conf/httpd/files.mydomain SSLOptions +StdEnvVars SSLOptions +StdEnvVars SetEnvIf User-Agent ".*MSIE.*" \ nokeepalive ssl-unclean-shutdown \ downgrade-1.0 force-response-1.0 This virtual host is repeated three different times with different server names, Apache is delivering the right contents out of the right directories for the Server Name's, it's just the SSL Certificates which are getting confused (There are three different certificates and keys generated). -- Regards, Adam Allen. IDE head scratcher
I have an old P-233 I'm turning into a firewall. I blew a fresh install of RH8 onto the drive, installed everything, and had it running. I then needed to run a hardware diagnostic on an IBM hard drive that had failed in another system. Since this one was not in production, had the cover off and was handy, I unplugged all the IDE devices, plugged in the IBM hard drive and booted from the IBM diag floppy. The machine BIOS was too old to see a 60 Gb drive, so the diag program failed. Anyway, I plugged my CDROM and HD back in and tried to boot. The GRUB loader booted Linux and it began its thing, up until it loaded the IDE drivers. As soon as it touched the hard drive, the system locked hard. I unplugged, reseated and re-checked everything that could be. No go. It reid booting from the install CD, it got to the same place and died. It did the same thing for any boot mode. I unplugged the HD, and I could boot from the CDROM, so that worked fine. I plugged the CDROM into the HD cable, ran fine. I plugged the HD into the CDROM cable, and it booted! I plugged the HD back into the primary cable and the CD back into the secondary cable, and it hangs at the same place. Any idea why this hard drive refuses to be a primary master and run fine as a secondary master? I am using the driver support for this card built into Redhat 8. I am considering disabling this device and putting in a PCI network adapter. If you move your hard-drive from primary master (/dev/hda) to secondary master (/dev/hdc) {as far as I remember} and that works, I suspect you have /dev/hdcX coded in for your root partition. How to get earlier Python version?
Zope very much dislikes Python 2.2.x, which is the version that comes with RH 8.0.
