konqueror and kde crash horribly (i.e. won't start)
I have a fresh install of RH8, if I try and start konqueror within an ordinary gnome session then I get several of the KDE application crash boxes up but no konq. The machine is a P3 1GHz with 1GB of memory. Adaptec 2940u2w SCSI card and a pair of 10K RPM disks (18 and 36GB). The installation media was checked first and passed the md5sum checks, I have run memtest86 overnight on the machine with no problems. Can anyone suggest what the problem might be? I tried a complete re-install last night and the machine still suffers from exactly the same problem. I have a second machine (800Mhz P3 with 256MB of RAM and ordinary IDE drives) which is also running RH8, but with no issues. The installation isn't identical but they are similar enough to suggest something's up. -- Cheers, Dave -- Psyche-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] https://listman.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/psyche-list

In preferences change ifup/ifdown commands to /sbin/ifup and /sbin/ifdown, and in advanced tab, change modem lock file to match serial port you are using. I do, in fact, have modemlights running, but I can't seem to get it to work properly; if I try it under deliberate error conditions (e.g, modem switched off), it's unrecoverable - it doesn't seem to check status as rp3 did. Thius may be a config. issue on my part - it certainly runs ppp-watch. I tried it this morning for the first time (completed last Net-oriented post-RH8-upgrade tweak) with the start/stop settings ifup/downing 'ppp3' which is my default ISP. It *did* log in, but never seemed to realise this (ISTR rp3 having the same problem a while back - 'twas when run non-root IIRC - a network script bug, since fixed). The button remained 'do you wish to connect?' evcen when I wished to /disconnect/. These two faults may be related - I wasn't sure what to put in the third tab. I have noticed that even doing 'ifup ppp3' (to choose ISP under ppp3), I actually get an I/F named "ppp0", so for that reason I left the I/F entry in modemlights "ppp0". Aureal Semiconductor AU8810 Vortex Digital Audio Processor (rev 03)
Hi everyone. I couldn't find the drivers for this soundcard, and the old drivers that I have are compiled with the wrong gcc. That's the error: The module you are trying to load (au8810.o) is compiled with a gcc version 2 compiler, while the kernel you are running is compiled with a gcc version 3 compiler. This is known to not work. Because I don't have the sourcecode I could not recompile them with the new gcc. My question is: someone has already installed this soundcard under RH8, maybe with other drivers? Re: Database/listing of all Psyche RPMs?
Install the "rpmdb-redhat" package :) It's on one of the 3 installation-needed cds. This will install a database in /usr/lib/rpmdb/i386-redhat-linux/redhat containing all redhat psyche packages. When some package you want to install complains about some dep you you may do rpm --redhatprovides to show if redhat provides this dep with one psyche package. You may also make some query like : rpm --dbpath /usr/lib/rpmdb/i386-redhat-linux/redhat -qa to list the packages (like you would to rpm -qa to list packages installed on your system). If you want to be really pervert you may even do rpm --dbpath /usr/lib/rpmdb/i386-redhat-linux/redhat --justdb -Uvh foo.rpm to complete the database with some custom dependancies of freshen it with RH errata (for example). Why you should not buy Promise products if you use Linux
Forgive me if I'm pointing out the obvious to some of you users who have been using Linux for years and have had trouble with hardware. I've only been a linux user for a couple of years and I am still learning all the time. I've been through two weeks of *hell* with a Promise FastTrack 4000. Its going back to reseller asap. In brief, the attitude of the support personnel towards Linux is terrible and the product does not appear to work as designed. Problems with the controller: 1) Promise only releases ONE driver compiled for ONE specific kernel (happens to be original 7.3 kernel). Therefore, if RedHat updates their kernel you are SOL. The driver that they did release is complaining about depmod errors when booting. 2) Forget about asking for source code to compile your own kernel. My most recent conversation, the tech was very arrogant, and told me that they would never under ANY circumstances release their source code to any Linux user and as he put it "it is our intellectual property" Wait don't you guys design hardware? Do you really support Linux?? 3) Forget about asking them for timely updates, in another conversation with them I asked them about Redhat 8.0 support. Response said they will release a driver in late January well it appears that the 8.0 kernel has been updated several times but I am positive (if history is any guide) that the only driver coming from Promise will support the original 8.0 release kernel only. 4) Controller does not work as advertised, especially with a RAID 5 setup, with issues regarding constant array rebuilds and zero tolerance for any sort of power failure. The last straw for me was when, mistakenly, the power on my webserver was shut off and it completely destroyed the array. I've never had a RAID 5 array that was this sensitive to power failures (wait, isn't that one reason why I set up a RAID 5 array in the first place???). I've been using SCSI RAID arrays for almost three years now, different controllers, different RAID setups and I've never run across such a poorly supported/designed product. To me, the Promise still sees Linux as a toy. This is beyond me especially when you have larger companies (IBM etc). getting into act. I really wish that Promise would decide to either support Linux or not. Don't walk the line and claim to support it but give a cold shoulder and a half-hearted response to end users. I guess I'm off to try the Adaptec 2400A, looks like the source is released for that card. Then again I probably should have stuck with RedHat's software based RAID, I've had a server running that for over a year with no problems to date. -Justin -- Psyche-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] https://listman.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/psyche-list

A very confusing dual boot problem.
I will describe the problem but first a question. We know that the first sector on the first disk is the MBR is found a boot loader and the partition table. One assumes that that the OS starts in cylinder 1. What is stored in the rest of the cylinder 0 other than the MBR? Now the problem. We install Linux and W2k on a Dell machine. The Linux runs. Now we boot the W2k. W2k has a disk manager program which allows you to see what W2k thinks about the structure of the disk, When the program is run it tells us that the Linux partition is Fat 32. We reboot the machine and find that the Linux is ruined. In will not boot and the disk seems to be written over by W2K. Now we have done this about several 100 times over the years and this has not happened before. Nor does it happen on other machines. Can someone suggest where to look for an answer? Can anyone confirm an impression that w2k keep a separate partition table that it uses, and if so where is it located? -- --- Aaron Konstam Computer Science Trinity University 715 Stadium Dr. San Antonio, TX 78212-7200 telephone: (210)-999-7484 email:[EMAIL PROTECTED] -- Psyche-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] https://listman.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/psyche-list
Re: A very confusing dual boot problem.
There is a quick fix to this. Flatten your Hard Drive, Install the windows 2K first, but make sure you leave enough unpartitioned space for a linux install. Then once you have installed 2k, pop in the linux disks, make sure to use GRUB and I can almost promise you that it will work perfect. Is it possible to make it so that when i plug in my camera in the usb-slot then it automounts? Now i have to mount it (mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/camera) by hand. Sound using AD1980 codec
Hello all, I am new to Linux and recently installed RH 8.0 on a system I built using the Intel D845PEBT2 motherboard. For now I would like to use the on-board sound but have not been able to find much info about configs or drivers for the Analog Devices AD1980 codec. Red Hat detects an audio device but I get no audio output. Has anyone gotten this configured and working or is it even possible yet? Much of what I have found so far has pointed to ALSA but I can't tell if it will support this audio. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Re: Why you should not buy Promise products if you use Linux
Perhaps I should clarify. Yes I do realize that the kernel is a collaborative effort of the Linus Kernel group. And that is what makes it so damn cool in the first place. A truly open and stable software platform that has no secrets, no twisted cost driven licensing schemes, and hence no anti-trust lawsuits. At first I thought the idea of not loading drivers because there is no source available was being a bit harsh to hardware vendors. But now I do agree 100% with Linus after going through the frustration of having to deal with this issue. > Justin, I have a quibble with your statement there. You are making an improper assumption. smb.conf file
Hi, I'm hoping someone can tell me what I'm missing from the following smb.conf file, or elsewhere, that is stopping a newly installed Redhat 8 server being seen by an NT 4.0 server and Windows 98 clients. There is definitely a network connection - I can use smbclient on the redhat server and access the NT shares. And there seems to be broadcasting going on, as when I alter the server string the change is seen on the Windows clients, but when I then double click on the redhat Server icon in network neighbourhood I get the error that the network path was not found. I can ping by name and IP address both ways, from redhat to windows and from windows to redhat. When I do smbclient -L server-name on the redhat server itself it shows the shares as active, but when I do the same on a Linux client I get connection refused errors, which I guess means it's some sort of permission problem. I've tried adding the users as samba users, with the same passwords. In the midst of all this have been able to get the Redhat server to join the NT domain, using the smbpasswd -j domain-name -r nt-pdc If anyone can help to point me in the right direction it would be very, very much appreciated. Have been through the smb.conf man pages, but I must be missing something. Not sure exactly what though. RH8 Routing LAN to Dial-up Internet

Re: is it possible to make my camera on usb (dev/sda1) to automountwhen i plug it in?
I set up the automounter so when I plug in the camera I can just cd to that directory and it automatically mounts. I make the timeout relatively short so that it unmounts quickly so I can then unplug the camera when I'm done downloading pictures. This is my auto.master entry: /misc /etc/auto.misc --timeout=30 And this is /etc/auto.misc: camera -fstype=auto:/dev/sda1 This usually works fine with my Nikon Coolpix 775 but eventually USB gets messed up and it won't work until a reboot. I find that using a PCMCIA interface for the Compact Flash card with my laptop works MUCH more reliably and much faster. The automounter configuration is pretty much the same. Just make sure that your device does come up as /dev/sda1 Kent Nyberg wrote: Is it possible to make it so that when i plug in my camera in the usb-slot then it automounts? I know I only recently posted the below message, but thought it good top post the solution that I stumbled across. I did another try in the windows network neighbourhood and got a different message, about "No service is operating at the destination network endpoint". Did some browsing on Technet and found this referred to a port issue. So looked at the firewall settings and saw they were set to high. Put them down to no firewall and the windows clients could then see the redhat server. Probably need to increase the settings and just let through the port for smb? Not too sure about that though. Any other thoughts appreciated, but at least I can get things going a bit more now. Thanks again to all who contribute to the list. Neil. Well, technically the Promise FastTrak is nothing more than a standard IDE controller, with software RAID built into the BIOS. It is not a hardware RAID card. So, Linux drivers for this card are merely software RAID either cloning the BIOS in a Linux driver, or actually executing the BIOS code. In either case, tests between the Linux md driver software RAID and the Promise FastTrak's firmware RAID consistently show the Linux md driver to be superior in performance. The Promise hardware RAID issues aside, is a really decent IDE controller IMHO, but the Ultra series of cards are identical hareware wise and a lot cheaper. The only difference between the Ultra and the FastTrak seems to be the card's BIOS I am told. Hope this info helps. -- Mike A. For some reason a >version ago RedHat dropped xterm from the menus. 2 reasons I can think of. 1) Reduce menu clutter. The menus are widely perceived to be heavily cluttered with a plethora of applications. This is very confusing in particular to new users, who really do not know what app they want, and just see a huge mishmash of random applications with funny names. 2) xterm is 'provided' as-is, however it is not 'supported'. Our supported terminal emulators are gnome-term and konsole. Rather than removing *all* unsupported apps, we have tried to find a balance between removing some duplication, and still providing some alternatives albeit unsupported, just for convenience. We've removed things like xterm3d, rxvt, colorxterm, nxterm, etc. for example. xterm itself being a long standing traditional legacy app provided by the X window system itself, I've decided to keep as I know many people do in fact use it and would much rather it be provided unsupported, than removed entirely. We need to provide a useable desktop that has less clutter than prior releases, and part of that is removing some of the applications that have similar functionality from the menus. Users are always free to add new entries to the menus if they prefer, and are encouraged to do so. Hope this helps to understand. TTYL -- Mike A. Re: Virtual PC
I used to use VMware, it is great, but is now fairly expensive. I have had success installing programs using wine on RH 8.0. NOTE: There is a trick to make it work. First thing you have to do is add your logon to group "wine", then log out and log back in. You can now access "/usr/share/wine-c", which is what the default install of wine believes to be your "C:" drive. Next put in the software CD and when it is mounted ; cd /mnt/cdrom Next in the install folder, often the cd's root, run ; wine setup.exe The software should install under "/usr/share/wine-c/Program Files" by default. To run the software type : wine "/usr/share/wine-c/Program Files/{programsfolder}/{program.exe}" Where {programsfolder} = the folder the program is installed in under "Program Files" and {program.exe} is the name of the executable program. Example// wine "/usr/share/wine-c/Program Files/Claris Corp/FileMaker Pro 4.0/FileMaker Pro.exe" {All supposed to be on one line} or wine /usr/share/wine-c/Program\ Files/Claris\ Corp/FileMaker\ Pro\ 4.0/FileMaker\ Pro.exe {All supposed to be on one line} NOTE: Paths and commands with a " " space must have the " " escaped or double quotes must be around the path and command. Psyche seems to be slow on my machine
Hi, I have RH 8.0 on my Systemax 1.4 Ghz, 30 Gb, 128 Mb, dual boot with Win 2K (24 Gb Linux, 6 Gb W2K). My apps seem to run quickly on Windows, but slowly under Linux. The problem seems to be anything gui. Text apps run under Gnome-terminal whiz along, once the window is open. A long text search/replace runs quickly. But anything else is slow. OpenOffice takes a looong time to load. Switching tasks is slow on just about everthing. When I hit the send/receive button in Evolution 1.2, it may take several seconds to respond. Re: A very confusing dual boot problem.
I don't know if it is related but about a year ago I had to replace my Dell 4100 hard drive. When that was done, the technician formated the disk for win2000. In a previously triple boot setup (dos, win2000, and Linux) I first installed the win2000, reduce the size and moved it to allow dos and a boot partition to use the first sectors on the hard drive. Then installed dos and last Linux. It had worked a couple of time before for me but not with this new disk. I discovered that Dell had installed a disk manager when they formatted the disk for win2000 that was not evident nor removable with Fdisk. I eventually had to remove it with a Dell provided scrip program, and the install would then work. Otherwise, I could only use win2000 even if I had installed Linux RH. Don't know if that helps. Athlon XP - Segmentation fault issues
Ditto what Markku wrote about using Memtest86. Excellent program. But the most likely solution is: remove the evil Soundblaster Live! soundcard. The Live! series is notorious for polluting the PCI bus, which Intel chipsets are relatively tolerant of but VIA chipsets aren't. Some motherboards are more tolerant than others. My old ASUS A7V KT133 chipset board was fairly tolerant, until I tried to use my neato new HDTV card; an ASUS A7V133 KT133a chipset board I built at work has had no trouble with a Live! 5.1; but an Epox 8KHA KT266 board was most definitely unhappy. How to track this recurring error thru the maze of init scripts. I see these on bootup and they can be reproduced by running a status check on any service, like: service sendmail status /etc/init.d/sendmail: line 2: HOSTNAME:sbcglobal.net: command not found sendmail (pid 543 533) is running... The reference is always to line 2 of and init script. But the entry isn't found at that location. Apparently it is a sourced file but I can't figure out which one. The actual data comes from /etc/sysconfig/network which shows: NETWORKING=yes HOSTNAME:sbcglobal.net GATEWAY=192.168.0.1 Some how the VARIABLE value is being seen as a command and of course when attempt is made to execute, it cannot be found. Pretty sure I recall being able to put an init script in /etc/rc.d/init.d and then that script would be seen by such tools as chkconfig setup ntsysv would see it and be be able to setup the symlink. DHCP, DNS and VPN
I'm running RHv8 on a Fujitsu laptop and connect to my ISP through a Linksys router. I have the router set up as a DHCP server which works fine. When the laptop acquires it's data from the server it builds the necessary /etc/resolv.conf file to deal with DNS through the ISP. All is fine so far. I also utilize Cisco's VPN 3000 software to establish a tunnel into my companies WAN. When this connection is established the VPN software (I'm assuming) re-writes the /etc/resolv.conf file to valid DNS entries for the internal WAN. Still all is fine. The problem is that when DHCP decides to renew the lease it also over writes the /etc/resolv.conf file with the original settings. The VPN connection is still active, but DNS is hosed. I've been told that an easy fix for this is to not use DHCP and just use static IP's. I don't really want to do that because I travel to different company offices and just plugging in the box and booting up with DHCP is so nice. I have done "zero" configuration for DHCP on the linux box other than telling it that I wanted to use DHCP when I installed v8. Is there some tricks -or- config settings I can utilize that will eliminate this problem? I have Grub installed on my /boot partition, and the W2K install resets the active partition. Attempting to use the W2K disk manager to set the active partition back to /boot hoses the partition table every time. My solution is to book into Linux rescue mode after the W2K installation completes and run fdisk to reset the active partition. Also, on a side note, I would > like to thank everyone so far for answering all my questions. This list > has helped me a lot. There are different shells (bash, ksh, zsh, tcsh, etc.). All you need to know here is "use bash" - you have to know bash anyway since lots of the system is scripted in it, bash is already installed, and bash is the best one anyhow. (ok, that's going to start an emacs vs. vi type argument, so I retract - "they are all great and you should try them and see which one you like" ;-)) There are multiple shells for the same reason there are multiple window managers, people coded them up and decided they liked one or the other. bash, zsh, and tcsh are the main ones people use interactively. ksh mostly seems to exist because it's the standard shell on some proprietary unixes, and so sometimes people are used to it or have existing scripts that use it. There's also plain "sh" which is the original shell, but is basically useless as an interactive shell. If you start an instance of any of these shells, the instance can be "interactive" or "login" An interactive shell is one that's connected to a terminal so it prints a command line prompt and you can type commands by hand. i.e. you interact with it. A noninteractive shell is normally one that's running a script. A login shell is intended to be the first shell that runs when you log in. All apps that you run post-login are "descendants" of the login shell. The actual shell program knows that it's a login shell because of the way the "login" program or gdm/xdm/kdm launches it. When a shell finds out that it's a login shell, it does some special things such as load ~/.bash_profile. So this way you can have scripted actions that happen only on login, not other times when you run a shell. Typically you set environment variables in your .bash_profile, as everything else in the login session will inherit them from the login shell. This is a mild oversimplification, because you can force any shell to think it's the login shell by passing the right command line options (such as --login) or by telling your X terminal to launch it as a login shell. But I've never heard of an interesting reason to do this, really. Anyhow, aside from stupid shell tricks, any shell that isn't the first shell run on login is a non-login shell. Using SMB to connect to AppleShare 6.3 server
Trying to demo linux for a client that has an AppleShare 6.3.x server. I can connect to server with Windows client. I cannot connect to it with samba... mount -t smbfs -o "username=administrator, password=password" //SERVER/Share /mnt/mountpoint After a 30 second effort, it returns "protocol error" likewise... smbclient -L //SERVER or smbclient -L //ip_address doesn't work either - it's strange. I tried encrypt passwords = yes and I tried it with no and it didn't make a difference. The computer connected to my Windows server at home - no problem and I do this all the time. The weak link is obviously the way AppleShare 6.3 server serves SMB connections. Has anyone gotten this type of setup to work? Workgroup Name is correct. also - related... I'm having trouble connecting to either printer in the office...The first is an HP LaserJet IIISi (very old network card) and a Toshiba Copier. Both support TCP/IP but I can't use LPR to print to either. I have tried to connect using LPR to AppleShare 6.3 print server but the HP just gets the page, flashes a bit and then resets back to ready mode. Apparently AppleShare 6.3 doesn't make the printers available as an Windows printer and the NIC on the IIISi apparently doesn't support HPJetAdmin type connections either - because of it's ancient roots. If you have networked laserprinters that don't really support true LPR, is there a way to make them work?
