Descriptives: Large Numbers and Variable Labels
Hello, I am very new to PSPP, and need help getting some basic things to work. I am excited to have found a free package I can run that is so basically simple to use.I am running version 0.7.8 on Fedora 12 on the command line. I am working with DNA data, with START and STOP being precise locations on a chromosome, up to 9 digits. My basic input starts with the following: GET DATA /TYPE=TXT /FILE='my.csv' /ARRANGEMENT=DELIMITED /DELIMITERS="," /FIRSTCASE=2 /VARIABLES= NAME1 A30 NAME2 A30 CHROM F2 START F9 STOP F9 SIZE F5.2 SNPS F4. My data looks like this: NAME,MATCHNAME,CHROMOSOME,START LOCATION,END LOCATION,CENTIMORGANS,MATCHING SNPS John Adams,Sam Jones,1,179653274,202477373,20.82,5100 John Adams,George Smith,1,233181217,245329248,25.87,3742 When I run DESCRIPTIVES, the MINIMUM and MAXIMUM are indicated in scientific notation rather than the precise values that I need for START and STOP. I have not been able to figure out how to change that to the F9.0 output format I need. Unless I missed it, the largest range size field for all operations seems to be F8.2 from what I see in the manual, that is not working for my data set that requires F9. DESCRIPTIVES /VARIABLES=CHROM START STOP SIZE SNPS /FORMAT=LABELS /STATISTICS=ALL. I also expect to be creating variables containing the midpoint of START and STOP using COMPUTE, and if I want to look at statistics or print those, something like F11.2 will be needed. I also have not found a way to get variable labels into the descriptives output. Here is what I would like that creates error messages wherever I put it. I have tried with and without the slash before NAME1. VARIABLE LABELS /NAME1 'PRIMARY KIT' /NAME2 'MATCH NAME' Where do Variable Labels statements go? Dear John, Thank you very much, both of those now work fine for me. But I am confused. I find the following in both the old user manual for 0.6.2 and on page 27 of the user manual for 0.7.9, is it not true that one can end a command by following the final one of the lines containing its subcommands, with a blank line? 4.2 Forming commands of tokens "... If you need to use the output for a presentation soon, a quick workaround would be to use short variable names without labels, and create a separate table showing variable names and labels, that would serve as a key to the histogram. Then, please reply to the pspp-users@gnu.org list so you can get more feedback from mailing list subscribers. I would imagine that the pspp team would welcome someone who could help create another language interface. But since that does not seem to be available yet (and someone correct me if I am wrong), then I tried to find other free statistical software for Linux you could use. It would help to know what level of statistics and types of procedures you are needing, but here is what I found. A program called ViSta is difficult to find a working download page, the only one I could find for Linux is an early version which is buggy. You could write the author. ViSta: The Visual Statistics System http://forrest.psych.unc.edu/research/vista-frames/unixvista.html R does have Spanish documentation, and a very active mailing list. CRAN: Contributed Documentation http://cran.r-project.org/other-docs.html But something else you might want to consider is GenStat, which is available for free for qualifying individuals, including educators in developing countries. It says there is Linux available. GenStat Discovery | VSN International http://www.vsni.co.uk/es/software/discovery/genstat-discovery Two other options that I can think of are: 1. Use PSPP in English, providing your students with a link to the web based PSPP Users Manual, which they could read using Google Translate or whatever translation engine they prefer. http://pspp.benpfaff.org/~blp/pspp-master/latest/user-manual/html_node/index.html However, the web version does not seem to have been set up with html CODE tags, at this point (I tested with translate.yahoo.com and translate.google.com). Those are html tags that tell translation engines not to translate the text indicated. Without those tags, translation engines happily translate commands into the foreign language, totally disregarding their sanctity and rendering the translation very confusing. Insertion of CODE tags is something that should be considered if it has not already been added as a feature of the online manual. (NOTE to PSPP team: adding these tags is not a trivial project, but requires no knowledge of any foreign language, and I believe would render the online manual a meaningful document for a larger portion of the international community without requiring developing separate ports for each language.) 2. The other option which I would expect is already available in Spanish, would be to have your students learn how to use the statistical functions provided in whatever free spreadsheet program is included with your Ubuntu Distribution. If none is included, Open Office Calc is free software that will run on Linux and does include many statistical functions. Also, should I also open a bug report with suggestions about improving search engine awareness of the foreign language versions? There needs to be some mention of the other languages on the home page. Also, the link on the PSPP home page that goes to a Blog in "en" actually leads me to what I think is the Brazilian Portuguese version of the blog. Is that 3 bug reports? Whether you can do what you want with PSPP on Windows depends on exactly what you want to do. Please explain in more detail what you would like to be able to do. I am thinking that if you want other people to be able to see what you are doing with the database, while you are working in PSPP, it might be possible to do something using shared sessions in VNC (Virtual Network Computing). But I do not know Windows at all, and I do not know if VNC and the file system in Windows can be set up so that only one user has write access. Salud, You need to say what kind of portable computer you have, if you want help. PSPP can be compiled for other architectures, but there needs to be enough interest and someone willing to do the work. What kind of operating system and version? Is there an English version available for your computer?
