[PLUG] system boot up time of mandriva LE 2005.

2005-08-05 Thread jayant ogale
hi,
i have installed mandriva LE 2005 on IBM T40P.
it takes painfully long time to boot up the system. It
practically halts at "starting Portmapper" message.
i have two questions.
1] why it takes more time? i believe that this is same
as MDK 10.2.
2] is there any way out to speed up the booting?
thanks,
Jayant.

Hello All!

This is Manas Alekar. I have been on the PLUG list for
some time now.
I have been following lots of mail about mailing
etiquette and
behaviour of people on the mailing list in general.

There are some misunderstandings on this list which
are leading to
waste of a lot of bandwidth at all our places. The
battle seems to be
between two factions, the 'power users' and the
'newbies'. I am firmly
entrenched in between both camps :).

I AM HAPPY THAT,YOU HAVE FRAMED THE PROBLEM CORRECTLY.
IF YOU DONT MIND,I WOULD LIKE TO ADD SOMEMORE TO IT.

The newbies seem to complain all the time that;
1. There is too much RTFM.
2. The big boys are rude.
3. The answers are not much help except people proving
they are smart.

THESE POINTS OF NEWBIES ARE RIGHT.

Thinking from the point of a newbie, I agree, that
undertones such an
attitude might seem present in the mails of some of
the people.

EXPERTS SIDE IS NOT ALL THAT CONVINCING.

The experts always complain that;
1. The newbies don't do their homework.

YOUR DEFINATION OF HOMEWORK MIGHT BE DIFFERENT THAN
THAT OF NEWBIES.

2. The newbies don't know how to ask (which is just
[1] in the first
place).

SO THEY ARE CALLED AS NEWBIES.

3. We got RTFM at some point in past, and we did not
mind it!

SOMEONE HAS TO STOP THE RAGGING CYCLE.[WHY NOT WE?]

The saddest part of the story is that they seem to be
correct in their
own rights too.

I BEG TO DISAGREE.

I have a slightly different take on this though. This
looks more to me
like a problem of newbies are from Mars, experts are
from Venus. We
seem to speak different languages.

It is important for the newbies to understand that
every community has
a way of functioning. The rules that govern the
behaviour mandated
from it's members are not born out of whimsical
personal fancies, but
out of evolution. They help the community flourish and
be efficient. A
lot has been learnt from experience and some axioms
are best followed
rather than questioned.

Bottom posting in mailing lists and being polite are
two such
examples. The abstraction from human interface that
the Internet
provides should not be abused. Talk to people on the
list the way you
would talk to them in person. Realise that most people
could be your
father's age or way more adept at things being
discussed than you are.
It is not *cool* to be abusive. Full stop.

Secondly, it is really unfair to ask a question just
because you were
too tired to look for an answer yourself.

SO CALLED EXPERTS ALSO ASK QUESTIONS WHICH MORE
EXPERTS CAN SAY RTM. **I INSIST ON RTM**.

 Although I agree that
collective experience should be made useful to the
members of the
community, in communities like ours, it is not exactly
appreciated if
you ask for help without trying yourself first. In
other communities,
such behavioral patterns might get characterised as
*looser*.

That said, there is one more very important thing that
people need to
understand. RTFM _is not_ Read The Fucking Manual. It
stands for Read
The Fine Manual.

PLEASE DONT FOOL YOURSELF.[FINE DOESNT MEAN ANYTHING].

Please remember that this is not intended to be
derogatory way of looking down upon newbies. It is
just a way quick,
efficient way for a person who found the relevant
information in the
manual to tell you that it exists there. It means -
"Well, I know that
this information is given in the manual. Can you just
look it up, so
that we can save my time and our bandwidth ?". Don't
feel offended at
RTFM. Similar is the situation with GG.

Lastly, the mailing list admin is our friend. He is
here to help us
run a more productive list. If you want to take up an
issue with him
or want to know why your mails are not going through,
you can always
mail him. It might be a trivial settings mistake which
he made by
mistake. He is human.

As for the experts, can you guys be more humane
towards the mortals ?
I know newbies waste a lot of your time and ask stupid
looking
questions, but in forgiving lies greatness.

That said, if anyone thinks that they disagree with
what I have said,
*sod off*. :))
THANKS AGAIN TO PUT THE PROBLEM PROPERLY. I WISH WE
SHOULD HAVE A FULL LENGTH DISCUSSION ON THIS TOPIC IN
OUR MONTHLY MEETING AND TRY TO FIND OUT SOME GOLDEN
MEAN SOLUTION.

Regards,
JAYANT

[PLUG] problem of power switch off on the lap-top

2006-10-28 Thread jayant ogale
hi,
i have installed mandriva 2007 on my sony s4m lap-top.
the os is running smoothly but there seems to be many
small problems.
1] even after enabling acpi, when the halt command is
given or even with the log off > switch off computer,
log is received up-to system halted and then nothing
happens [i mean power is not switched off]. i have to
do it mannually each time. what is the solution?
2] attached printer and scanner gets detected properly
but does not get installed / configured.
3] modem [HDAUDIO soft V-92] does not get installed.
4] wireless card is detected but does not get
installed.
somebody told me that if i installed the system from
the freely downlodable cds or the dvds which we get
along with some magazines, many of the so called
commercial drivers are not provided with these cds.
But if we purchase box-pack from the company we get
all these drivers with it.
is it true? if yes, what can we do about it?
thanks,
jayant

[PLUG] querry about mandriva usb flash drive

2007-01-27 Thread jayant ogale
Hi friends,
i am planning to buy mandriva usb flash drive. But
before that i want to get my doubts cleared. I had
written this mail to mandriva, but i have received no
response from them.
1] will this flash drive support all my internal and
periferal hardware like
   a] HD audio soft V 92 data fax\modem
with smart CP
   b] scanner – hp scanjet 3200
   c] printer epson – lq 1050
d]will my wireless lan card get
configured automatically?
if not, what am i supposed to do?
2] if this flash drive is writeable, there is a
possibility of deletion of some software by error. Is
there any back-up dvd or partition provided with it?
3] how are we supposed to get root access on this?
4] is there a facility to install this o.s. on hard
disc?
Thanks,
jayant

Another suggestion would be to use something like
http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/usb.html

Actually you could also do your own thing by
downloading the distro
from
http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/download.html

and then burning it on your usb key. I did it a long
time back; and if
I
remember right;
the only thing I had to do was to make the partition
bootable (set the
bootable flag set using fdisk).

Follow these steps, if interested
http://www.althack.com/2006/03/10/how-to-run-linux-on-a-usb-drive/

There are other distro's available on the USB; just
google for them.
The
only real question is the use -
Mandriva has the support structure etc., if things
crash.

[PLUG] running tally on linux

2009-07-09 Thread jayant ogale
hi,
when advocating for linux o.s.,in the business world, all the time, i
am facing the question of running tally on linux. i was listening to the
news of tally coming with a linux version.[but i do not think so].
so i can think of two options for me.
1] to run tally with crossover in xandros.
or
2] to run it with wine in mandriva.
has anybody actually tried it this way?
if yes, please arrange for its FULL demonstration in our next plug meeting.
or i will appreciate, if someone can show me how to do it in person.
thanks,
jayant

[PLUG] problem with mdv 2010

2010-01-23 Thread jayant ogale
hi,
i have installed mdv 2010 on my lap top.
during installation - no problems.
after installation, when i tried to boot, login screen appears properly.
after login, all the messages like starting window manager etc. are seen.
then the GUI appears but nothing happens there after.
login music comes after about 3 minutes and there after screen freezes. i can
see the hard disk running light on my lap top, hear the hard disc rotating
sound continuously.
thereafter the only way out is physically switching off the power.
please let me know if there is any way out?
thanks,
jayant

hi,
i am trying to install mandriva 2008 on my macbook laptop. it installs
successfully, but at the last stage it says reboot. and when i press enter it
hangs.
i tried xandros 4 also but with this distro in the initial stage only it says
1] iso image not found 2] cd not found and hangs.
when i googled, it confused me more.
my question is
1] is it possible to have duel boot  macbook [mac + linux]?
if yes, is it a simple procedure?
i would like to request anyone who has done it, to show a full demo in our next
months meeting.
i will bring my mac and a distro required.
someone told me that you have to duel boot it with windows first and then in
windows you can make linux duel boot. is it true?
thanks,

Re: [PLUG] ITR filing w/o proprietary s/w

2011-08-28 Thread jayant ogale

That time of the year, when invariably this frustration arises in many
FOSS users' minds and invariably such discussion threads come up in
various mailing lists and die down.

Nobody knows how to change the system, or how to even wake it up to what
horrendous choice they have made by forcing to buy proprietary software.
They simply claim online return filing is "free".

Once in a while representations are made by FOSS enthusiasts' groups to
the Govt, some talk of PIL comes up and dies down.

Some enthusiasts have ported the forms to OpenOffice, but they have done
that only for one odd form for one odd year's version. Commendable effort
though not sufficient for all.

To complicate life, the forms do undergo minor revisions every year, and
even during a given return filing season. It's likely to undergo a major
revision whenever a new tax code comes into force.

Some (rather many) simply subscribe to paid online or offline services for
this purpose. The pain (I find) with this is, you still are responsible
for what they file and end up spending a good amount of time ensuring the
correctness and find annoying defects at times with what your vendor has
prepared as your IT return. You end up paying them for educating them at
times.

This year I'm starting this thread after the "return filing season" has
subsided, so that at least next year we can save the humiliation for
ourselves.

No, this time not suggesting PIL, representation to Govt and all.

Let's try to deal with it technically. What would it take to create the
"xml" that one has to finally upload be prepared by hand? Its schema is
available. What needs to be extracted from their Excel is some
auto-computed fields' rules and some validation rules. Is it possible to
reliably extract the macros from Excel forms and mimic them into an
offline utility?

Has anyone tried anything like that. (Salute to you if you have.)

Any ideas on this are welcome.

Mayuresh.

my openion is:- the solution to this problem is to file a writ petition in the
public interest not only for IT returns but for all the govt. documents. court
should make it compulsary foss compatibility , for all govt. sites. for that
matter, if any of us is an advocate or any active advocate on the side of foss,
should come forward and we will support him.

Legal procedures require time and money. Advocates are unlikely to work
for free - unless some fresh law graduates want to grab this opportunity
for exposure or unless an advocate is a FOSS enthusiast/close kin of one
etc.

While above option is open, I'd still invite technical suggestions on
feasibility to extract the computational and validation rules embedded in
those Excels to help write utilities of our own - or at least manually
apply them and create the xmls.

My knowledge of MS Excel is virtually 0 and is likely to be so with many
members on this list - by very nature of the list. Still if someone has
any ideas on this, please do share.

Mayuresh.

one of my learned friend told me that we can take this issue to consumer forum
as well. this is against MRTP act. and we being a consumer, we have a right to
approch the forum. this will be less expensive as well as less time consuming.
so any of the forum member is having a procedural experience about consumer
forum, please take over.

I have some questions before any policy changes are made:
(a) Why should messages require a moderation in the first place? What
triggered the moderation?
Most moderated lists are "restrictive", and
do not foster open collaboration.
(b) Why should top posting be "banned"? How do you expect a Linux
newbie in Pune to suddenly grow ascii email posting skills? If this is
the entry criteria, what is the real motive of PLUG?

Frankly, I am tired of the "restrictions to post" on PLUG, and as a
result don't even consider attending the monthly meets, or post useful
information.

Oh, and these restrictions are not "free as in freedom". ;-)

Re: [PLUG] mailing list issues

2013-01-04 Thread jayant ogale

Apart from a very few people on the list who are raising questions
about the mailing list, I have not come across anyone who is raising
the issue.

Well, it is upto the mailing list members to decide how the list
should work. If majority feels that it should be more open, let it be.
If all the filters and moderation bits are removed and the list
becomes completely open, I will be the
happiest person as I will not
have to take any blames/bashing from anyone for things that I never
did, and/or was nowhere related to the activities. I have been facing
that blaming/bashing for more than 10 years now so as to keep the
integrity, confidentiality of the things.

Wishing you all a Very Happy New Year.

I cannot understand why lately all PLUG meets announcements/rescheduling
are being made directly on the day when the meet is expected or at the most
1 day in advance.

Since most of the members understand that by default the PLUG meets are on
the 1st Saturday of the month, many people turn up for the meet and get
disappointed finding the meeting being rescheduled.

The PLUG meet announcement should be co-ordinated  and announced at least 1
week in advance.

Thanks  and Regards
Gaurav Pant.

when i gave this suggesstion last year, many members were shouting at me. on
the top of it, they suggested that i sould take over this job of announcing the
meet.

OP mentioned to me (private email) that he is using macbook pro - not "PC"
(I assume) like most of us.
I have suggested to him that he should try special "Mac" version of Ubuntu
(Haven't heard from him since)

hi,

as i have already written, i am using macpro 9.2 with i7 processor [don,t know
about wi-fi card].

i have tried many ubantu versions [incliuding mac version].

in the process, i must have wasted more than 10 dvd's.

please let me know the exact link to download iso which will DEFINATELY work
live, on my lap-top and identify all avilable wi-fi networks.

[PLUG] e-mail / communication privacy

2015-02-01 Thread jayant ogale
hi,recently read about dispute between wiki-leaks and Google.once again, the
seriousness of the issue struck my mind.the privacy of the e-mail contents and
communication in general is a serious issue.i think some time back we were
discussing about it.in the laymans term:
is it possible for our community to start fully secured e-mail transactions? i
do not mean that someone having that data and not giving it out to anyone at
any cost but what i mean is that once i receive  / open a mail sent by a sender
it will be only on my computer and will get automatically deleted from its
travelling route [servers]. so that no one will be able to access it from any
server.similarly no one should be able to get / store my browsing history?this
idea might sound vague / absurd. but i think this is what many people /
organisations will be looking for in the near future.thanks, jayant ogale.

[PLUG] making sd bootable card

2015-06-29 Thread jayant ogale
hi,
i have macbook pro lap-top with i7 processor.
i am trying to install knoppix [64bit] on a sd card and make it bootable.
i have googled many times and tried atleast 10 to 15 different methods to do so.
but no success. i do not get any errors while transferring knoppix. but then
can not boot from sd card.
i know that sd card is not supported directly on macbook pro. one has to
install refit. but that also failed.
if anyone has a first hand experience for doing so, please let me know any
hitch or pitfall.
alternatively, while booting through refit i can get a shell prompt
shell>>
is it possible on command line to boot from /dev/disk1? does it works?
why i want bootable sd card knoppix can be discussed later.

[PLUG] tor browser

2015-08-08 Thread jayant ogale
hi,
recently i read about tor browser. they claim that user identity remains
anonymous,it not possible to locate the users location, it is not possible to
store the browsing details.
also they claim that it not possible to intercept and read your mails and other
details.
is it true? i mean has anybody verified these claims [technically]?
i will be interested to know
1] what are the advantages and disadvantages of using tor browser?
2] internet providers are supposed to store our internet browsing details. if
the claims are true how do they do it?
3] similarly they have come up with tails o.s. does this o.s. has any specific
advantages as compared to other o.s.?

i do not want to discourage you but let me point-out to you the power of our

hi Mr. Oak,
i really appreciate your efforts.
but as per my view, the words "CAN" and "PREFER" are some what parallel.
both have an escape route to MS.
in fact, if the govt. is on the path of adopting linux, they should stop MS-CIT
and start LINUX-CIT.

https://riot.im/app/#/welcome and register [Yes more registrations]
5) Now using new matrix ID, login to riot app
6) At bottom of Riot app click on '#' sign at top and type freenode
7) Select 'Freenode IRC Bridge status'
8) Now click on human face icon next to '#' to left side not the 1 on
right hand side.
9) Search for NickServ
10) Now open NickServ's chat window and type following command =

FYI: There might be some simplified process/way. I don't no. I used
above steps. Above steps are given in very detailed for everybody's
