[PLUG] Shriek Noise in Ubuntu Intrepid

I'm running Ubuntu Intrepid 8.10. kernel 2.6.27-11 on TP r51.

The problem started when I was playing a movie from my external WD, somehow
the wire got loose, and after that no sound in Ubuntu.
I tried checking the volumes, and alsa-mixer but of no avail.

But what's interesting is it gives a very high intensity shriek noise when I
bring my hand/fingers in front of the speakers. Beats me as to what is
wrong, before I'm forced to reinstall linux is there any way I could find
out what seems to be the root of the problem?

[PLUG] How to make a window executable software from linux

I was wondering how to code something in linux (a simple daily expense
manager) that runs on linux and also be able to be executed in windows?

The doubts are : How to aprroach it without the use of C, C++, Java or any
web based application.

[PLUG] Sharing of Swap Space

Hello,

I was thinking to get a look into the three distro: Lenny, Fedora 11
and Slackware.

After doing 3 partition of 20 GB can I use 1GB swap space common for
these three ?

hello,
thanks ... as i sit and wait for fedora 11 to be released and in the
mean time reading as much i can on the net about slackware.. i just
need to know one thing

besides setting up partition why is it advisable to mount various dirs
as etc, var, root, home on different partition ?

if i happen to use a single hard drive what good will it bring me.

[PLUG] slackware lilo and window manager

Hello..

I installed slackware 12.2 under vmware. It was successful but it
seems I've somehow ended up not assigning the lilo to MBR, rather to
root.

I do boot using the installation dvd - use the on screen prompt to
provide the link for the boot. login as root - the default user so
far.

I just want to know how to change the lilo to MBR and to start the
window manager -- btw, i have checked the black window manager during
installation.
