[BUGS] BUG #4449: allows "pg_ctl restart" to terminate idle processes

2008-10-05 Thread Kevin M. Kilbride

The following bug has been logged online:

Bug reference: 4449
Logged by: Kevin M. Kilbride
Email address: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
PostgreSQL version: 8.3
Operating system: Gentoo GNU/Linux 2008.0
Description:allows "pg_ctl restart" to terminate idle processes
Details:

Because a very large number of clients now habitually establish permanent
connections to PGSQL in order to alleviate startup overhead, the "smart"
restart mode of pg_ctl has become nearly useless because it will not
terminate idle processes.

It would be nice if pg_ctl were updated so that the "smart" restart mode
simply terminated idle processes (a la "fast mode"), but waited for active
processes to finish transactions before terminating them. This would restore
"low-impact restart" functionality to those systems with clients that
establish permanent connections...which is virtually everybody, these days.

[BUGS] BUG #4450: Postgres do not ask for passord

2008-10-05 Thread Carlos

The following bug has been logged online:

Bug reference: 4450
Logged by: Carlos
Email address: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
PostgreSQL version: 8.2
Operating system: linux
Description:Postgres do not ask for passord
Details:

I have one user that is a superuser. The pg_hba.conf is set to use md5
specific to this user. When I connect the postgresql do not ask for the
password. If I change the pg_hba.con to reject, it works. Do you know what
is the problem?

Maybe you still have an entry like

   local all all trust

somewhere in pg_hba.conf?

I'm not following this, Bruce. HOT came out in 8.3, not 8.4, so why would we
wait on documenting the problem?

> I believe a mention in the manual would require quite complex wording.

Seems something would be better than nothing. Example:

"Note: In versions 8.3 and higher, indexes may not be immediately visible
due to the way HOT chains work. For more information, please see
."

It might be nice to upgrade README.HOT to a real documentation page
as well.

Posting both your versions of pg_hba.conf would help. (Strip out the
commented lines).

Best regards,
