Is there an accessible MP3 player that works with Rhapsody?
Greetings list: I teach a music appreciation class at a local community college. In the fall of this year, I am switching to a new textbook, The Musical Experience by John Chiego. Every instructor of the class receives a year of Rhapsody to Go which allows one to transfer songs from Rhapsody to a supported MP3 player. Each chapter of the text has an accompanying playlist. I am familiar with using Rhapsody and have no trouble there. I have also been playing with Applian Technology's Replay Media Catcher program to grab the playlists and convert them to MP3 files. Applian says this is legal, but I have to wonder if Rhapsody would be thrilled. I will use Media Catcher if I have no other option, but an MP3 player with attached speakers would be preferable to CDs and a boom box anyway. Does anyone have any experience with any of the MP3 players supported by Rhapsody? Any help would be appreciated. I'm not sure what format the playlist of files from the textbook are in. Not sure how to get at that info since I can't actually download the files. From the review at http://mp3.about.com/od/digitalmusicdelivery/fr/Rhapsodyreview.htm, it says: File Formats: Rhapsody has its own DRM system just like the iTunes Store does to protect its music files. The DRM system that is used is known as Helix. The file format that is used with this encryption technology is RAX (AAC encapsulated in Helix). You can alternatively download WMA files if you prefer; these are protected with Microsoft's WMDRM system. I don't use Rhapsody myself, but the implication that you could only get Real audio files from Rhapsody didn't sound right to me, so a quick trip to Google gave me the above information. RE: Is there an accessible MP3 player that works with Rhapsody?
Route Pc to Jaws and then Jaws to PC. JFW works with Rhapsody better than Window-Eyes at present. Also, Rhapsody support from the web has improved considerably. I need to do a complete reworking of my Rhapsody tutorial. Let me try to explain the Rhapsody situation a little better. First, for $12.99 a month, a person can stream tracks to their heart's content. If one wishes to download a track for burning to CD, it must be purchased for $0.98 or less. For $13.99 a month, tracks can be streamed and transferred to a portable player supported by Rhapsody. If one wishes to download or burn tracks, they still must be purchased. It is true that Rhapsody has gone to unprotected MP3 files when purchasing, but I'm not sure how this affects the Rhapsody To Go options mentioned above. I may need to call tech support, wait an hour on hold, and talk to someone who doesn't speak English well and won't have a clue what I'm trying to explain. I suspect I'm going to have to do that, though. Trouble accessing the iTunes store
Greetings all. I was wondering if anyone else is having trouble searching the iTunes store. When I try, I get a message stating that the operation has timed out and that I need to check my network settings. Unable to change default speech on my computer
Greetings all: In preparation for possibly purchasing an iPod Nano, I decided to change my computer's default speech from Microsoft Mary to just about anything else. I currently have K 1000, Jaws, and Window-Eyes installed on my system. I have had Open Book and System Access installed in the past. Using either screen reader and going into Control panel and choosing speech, as soon as I press enter I received the following error message: Speech Properties The requested task cannot be carried out because the necessary engine could not be created. Please select a different engine and/or a different audio device. OK After pressing ok, I am able to supposedly select a different speech engine. Most of them are Scansoft voices as well as the Microsoft voices. Two are VW Kate and VW Paul. After choosing any setting and pressing ok, I get the following error: RUNDLL An exception occurred while trying to run "C:\WINDOWS\system32\shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Speech\sapi.cpl",Speech" OK I will be most appreciative if anyone can shed some light on this for me. I Googled the errors and found references to them but no solutions. Thanks for any and all help. To unsubscribe from this list, send a blank email to: pc-audio-unsubscr...@pc-audio.org

Actually I have a good ear and have no trouble learning the music. We are switching worship leaders and I will need to help distribute chord sheets to the musicians. I'd rather not do it by hand if necessary because I find placing the chords above the words to be quite tedious to say the least. There are quite a few free resources for finding chord charts, but they are becoming fewer and fewer as the publishers crack down on this practice. No big deal if the site isn't useable by me, but it would be nice if it was. Thanks for the help, though. As far as playing keyboard in church, most worship music is quite easy to learn. Unlike the hymns, most songs now a days have just a few chords and if you have an ear for music, should be easy for you. I lead worship in my church and we do a great amount of the modern worship songs, and I don't have any problem with them. I play guitar and piano depending on the song. Re: Which sound editor to use?
I decided to go ahead and spend the $134 to upgrade. I do wish to do voiceover work. I would like to use some really nice reverb and possibly other sound effects with my promos. Occasionally when editing content for Main Menu, I find that some really nice noise reduction would help. I've always found that to be a bit tricky to use with either SF or GoldWave, but I suspect Sound Forge has some better tools. That is the scoop. I bit the bullet, bought the product, and we'll see what I think. I figured the upgrade price might not be around forever. Just as Code Factory has different products for the Symbian, Windows Mobile and Pocket PC platforms, Nuance has different products for the Symbian and now Windows Mobile platform. I think people need to be careful when talking about Talks that they're clear to specify the Symbian versus Windows Mobile version. I'm also not sure why you're saying Verizon is getting away with anything selling Talks for $99. AT&T sells Mobile Speak for $89, and I think that's the same product you'd get from Code Factory for quite a bit more. I suspect the price is more the result of a deal made between Nuance and Verizon or AT&T and code Factory than it is the fact that a stripped down version of the screen reader is being sold. -- Christopher chalt...@gmail.com -Original Message- From: pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] On Behalf Of Martin, Tim A., NMDOT Sent: Thursday, August 27, 2009 12:48 PM To: PC Audio Discussion List Subject: RE: Talks question Hi Lauren, I think the version of Talks Verizon sells for the $99.00 would work for most functions, but it is not the full working version. That is probably why they get away with selling it for the price they do. Mobile Speaks does not work at this time for the Black Berry phones, but it does work quite well with the Ozone, that is the phone I have. You might talk to Verizon and they may let you have the good price on the Ozone, I believe it was $49.00 with a 2 year contract. If you can afford it, I would get the Ozone without speech, and then you can purchase Mobile Speaks. I realize it is pricy, but you can transfer the software to other Smart phones in the future should you decide at some point to get another phone. Of course, you can only run the software on 1 phone at a time, but when you need to, the transfer is quite simple. Also, you get a fully functional 30-day trial before you have to purchase, which allows you some time to acquire the funds. The company that I purchased my Mobile Speaks from has a 6 or 12 month purchase plan. They do charge a small fee for this, but it makes things a little easier if you can't get the money at once. You are able to access the Internet fine from this phone. You do however, need to have good cell service in the area in which you live. You can set the phone up to retrieve your Internet E-mail, and it is not difficult to read texts or E-mails. My interest in these recorders is as a relatively affordable portable recorder for blind people doing audio journalism-type recordings for talking newspapers and audio magazines. There is sufficient voice guidance now to make this a far more reliable and practical job than with much less accessible recorders. the Plextor may come into it's own where a bit more dynamic range is needed and some music of limited dynamic range could be recorded too with it. That leaves us with recorders of the calibre of the Sony PMCD50 - hope I've got it's model number right - for live music and high quality sound gathering. While it's not really "accessible" we're told by Neal Ewers it is usable. that would seem to me to be the main choices open to us just now. Others could add in the Edirol R09h and the new Zoom recorder and there are podcasts kicking about covering these too. Let's hope someone reviews the Olympus DM series soon. Ray Tim Noonan wrote: Going from the functionality in the Olympus DS71, which has adjustable recording levels, there are either 10, but probably 15 recording volume settings, accessed by pressing the left and right arrows while in record pause or record. In addition, there are still the three microphone sensitivity settings on the side of the machine. The volume limiter (anti clipping facility is disabled when recording is set to manual volume levels. I haven't tested extensively, but while I think the voice capture of the DS-71 is extraordinarily good, for full spectrum recording, there is a lot more background hiss during silent passages and it seems somewhat limited frequency response, than one would expect for a wave recorder. I deduce from the promotional material, that the DM-550 will be a reasonable step up in actual recording quality, above and beyond the quality of the DS-71. That all said, for recording meetings and small conferences, the clarity of voice recordings and memos is second to none on the DS71, and its fantastic form-factor, in-built speaker and battery life. I'm not convinced the DM-550's recording quality will equal the Plextalk Pocket, and am certain it will be nowhere near the Zoom and Edirol units. This is a very detailed post. I have both units - which I am happy about, because as a conference speaker, the DS-71 (like the DS-50) mic remote control and detachable mic option is perfect for capturing my presentations. I can wire myself up, and just flick the switch on the remote to start and stop recording - almost total reliability that record has activated. If, you have a DS-50, you can use its remote control and Mic with the DS-71. You can not, however, use the DS-50 or DS-71 remote control on the DM-520! The price I paid for the DS-71 was nearly double that of the DM-520, and in many ways the DS-71 is an inferior product, using an older generation of technology. I actually think someone stuffed up somewhere in releasing the DS-71 when they did, it feels like a legacy product that was very delayed to market. Still speaking about the DS-71, the recording quality is pretty good, and you do notice the Wave recording improvement over the DS50 and the WMA on the DS-71. However, it is not as good as the audio recording quality of the DM-520, and has more noise floor and Mic preamp noise (I think). In addition, the external stereo Microphone for the DS-71, though an improvement on the DS-50 mic is definitely inferior to the in-built stereo Mics of the DM-520, especially if you want to use any of the zoom recording modes that The DS-71 offers. I don't actually believe that they fully tuned the DS-71 mics for the Zoom technology. I would never use any of the zoom options on the DS-71, but I do use them for some situations (especially Narrow, and sometimes wide) on the DM-520. The narrow setting is good for keeping sounds localised, and the wide option is good for spreading the left right mike pickup to catch several speakers from a single location. If you want to hear how the DM-520 Narrow zoom mic setting works in open air situations, you can go to my CoffeeCast Conversations podcast at http://coffeecast.posterous.com Other advantages of the DS-71 are that it buffers key presses far better. For flipping back and forth between recordings in a folder, results are better. Also it doesn't exhibit the annoying audio click through the speaker when you move to different recordings. Both these problems with the DM-520 are bugs, and I do hope a firmware release will address them, as they do frustrate me, when using the DM-520 as a voice recorder. Also, it is necessary, occasionally, to reboot the DM-520 to fix an occasional bug where recording is flawed and choppy. This means that absolute trust of capturing a recording is somewhat compromised. Monitoring important recordings with earphones is therefore useful. I power the machi

I just placed an order for the Olympus DM-520 and was reading through the manual which I found online at www.olympusamerica.com. I decided to get the sound professionals binaural mics used on so many Blind Cool Tech podcasts. They are model SP-TFB-2. Together with a bag to keep the mics in the total was $81. With my $25 Pay Pal reward voucher it came down to around $56. Not a bad price. Re: setting time on Olympus dm-520 and other findings
Where is the serial number on the player so my wife won't have to look all over Heaven's half acre for it? (smile) Glad to know the software works. I was going to try it. Pat Ferguson said it didn't but I had questions about that. (grin) - Original Message - From: "Robert Logue" To: "PC audio discussion list. " Sent: Tuesday, December 15, 2009 12:28 AM Subject: setting time on Olympus dm-520 and other findings Some findings about the Olympus dm-520: A great discovery for me is that we can set the time on the dm-520 using the included Olympus Sonority software. Very nice since the unit doesn't talk when setting the clock: synchronize date/time from the device menu. Can also be done automatically each time the unit is connected from the tools, options, device tab. Speaking of options, this dialog is a bit hard to use with Jaws. It is necessary to use the Jaws cursor because the tab key only takes one to the first control on each tab page. They aren't actually tabs but the pages are selected from a tree instead. A strange thing about the file listings in the recorder folder is each one has the number 7 in front of the name so I hear 7 graphic 228 filename each time I arrow up and down. I wonder what that "7" is. I also wonder what the graphic stands for. I'm just learning to use the Sonority software. I'm glad I registered the unit as I got 10% off purchase of accessories. So I went for the wireless remote control. I didn't go for the extra batteries as I have my own rechargeables. Speaking of registering: The Sonority software serial number is on a peace of paper that has a strip of tape along one end. I was able to scan that. But, I did have to get sighted help to read the hardware serial number. Oops! I pressed new from the file menu. That brought up the "found new hardware wizard". I cancelled that as the drivers were already installed. But, I just heard "system settings changed". What now? Better save this and see what happened. I think I refreshed the device so Windows reinstalled the drivers. Oh well. Didn't loose any files. Re: Instructions for Setting time/date and the Timers on Olympus DS andDM series machines
Saving this info in my Main Menu folder. Why that folder? Because with your kind permission I plan to do a demo of setting the date and time on the DM-520 as well as using the sonority software once I get comfortable with it. I will probably generally give credit to this list since there are several people who have contributed information about this player if you all don't mind. - Original Message - From: "Tim Noonan" To: "'PC Audio Discussion List'" Sent: Tuesday, December 15, 2009 1:37 AM Subject: Instructions for Setting time/date and the Timers on Olympus DS andDM series machines The following information is taken - and updated by me - from a FAQ on the Olympus DS-50 found on their web site at http://www.olympusamerica.com/cpg_section/cpg_support_faqs.asp?id=1278#30 ***How can the blind and visually impaired set the time and date? The recorders' built-in audio cues can be used to enter the Time & Date settings. These same cues can be used to set Timer Recording and Alarm functions as well. Using the Keypad When executing a menu function that requires time and date setting, use the buttons on the recorder's four-way keypad to enter the settings. The settings are hour, minute, month, day, and year. Press the PLUS (UP) and MINUS (DOWN) buttons, respectively to increase and decrease the values. Press the REWIND (LEFT) and FAST FORWARD (RIGHT) buttons to move between variables. Press the OK/MENU button to complete the set-up and start the clock. Depending on the year of release for the machine, Each time and date variable has a baseline value, from which it is possible to calculate the number of times the PLUS (UP) or MINUS (DOWN) buttons must pressed to reach a particular value. On the DS-50, The baseline settings for hour, minutes, month, day, and year are respectively 12 AM, 00, 1M, 1D, and 2007Y. On the DM-520, the settings work the same, however the default year is 2009 rather than 2007, because the DM-520 wasn't released until 2009. I haven't properly explored, but I imagine the DS-71 will default to 2009 as well. The values appear on the recorder screen as shown below: When setting time and date variables the recorder emits distinct audio cues to determine that the variables are being changed. Pressing the PLUS (UP) button causes the recorder to emit a high-pitched beep. Pressing the MINUS (DOWN) button elicits a low-pitched beep. When a baseline value is reached from either direction, the audio cue becomes a chirp. The DS-50 (and others) digital voice recorder has a Voice Guide that speaks the menu items. However, it cannot speak the time and date or file names. When the DS-50 recorder is turned on for the first time , the Voice Guide function is enabled. If the Voice Guide is disabled, use the following steps to enable it: 1.Turn the recorder on by sliding the POWER/HOLD button downward. 2.Launch the menu by holding down the OK/MENU button in the center of the four-way keypad for 1 second. 3.Press the MINUS (DOWN) button 13 times to arrive at the Voice Guide setting in the menu. 4.Press the FAST FORWARD (RIGHT) button on the keypad twice. 5.Press the OK/MENU button in the center of the keypad once to enable the Voice Guide. 6.Press the REWIND (LEFT) button on the keypad once to return to the menu. Note that Details for activating the voice guidance on other machines, will differ. ***Setting the Time and Date 1.on the DS-50, If the Voice Guide has just been enabled and returned to the menu, press the MINUS (DOWN) button 7 times to arrive at the Time & Date setting. The Voice Guide will speak, "Time and Date Setting." 2.If the menu on the DS-50 has been newly opened, press the PLUS (UP) button four times to arrive at the Time & Date setting. [If you are using a different model, such as the DM-520 or DS-71, get to the time and date settings, and follow the below steps.] 3.Press the FAST FORWARD (RIGHT) button to open the Time & Date menu. The first variable to set is the hour. Press the PLUS (UP) button or MINUS (DOWN) button until the recorder chirps instead of beeps. The chirp means the hour variable has been set to 12 AM. 4.Press the PLUS (UP) button the number of times necessary to arrive at the correct hour value. Remember: The baseline value for hour is 12 AM. Therefore the first 11 button presses represent AM values. It may be quicker to press the MINUS (DOWN) button and count backward from 12 AM if the correct time is a PM value. 5.Press the FAST FORWARD (RIGHT) button to move to the minute variable. Press the PLUS (UP) or MINUS (DOWN) button until the recorder chirps instead of beeps. The chirp means the minute variable has been set to the baseline value of 00. 6.Press the PLUS (UP) button the number of times necessary to arrive at the correct minute value. If it would be quicker to count backward to the minute value, the MINUS (DOWN) button can be used to arrive at the correct minute value. 7.Press the FAST FORWARD

Pros and cons of varible bit rate
The subject is a question, not a statement. I have been uploading Main Menu archives as a 128KBPS MP3 file. I see that many people recommend 192KBPS, but there a parts of the show that really don't need that high a bit rate. In fact, I have also read that encoding at too high a bit rate can cause unwanted artifacts just as much as encoding at too low a bit rate. Variable bit rate seems a good choice for me to use, but I would like some thoughts from audio experts. Thanks. Larry Skutchan of The American Printing House for the Blind discusses and demonstrates some features of Book Port Plus, a new product from APH due for release some time in March. Larry talks about the philosophy behind the design of the product, giving us a glimpse into the decision-making process. He talks about why some features are present in the unit, why some features are not yet present, and what we can expect to see in subsequent updates to the product. Why did APH choose Vocalizer as the text to speech engine of choice? Why not Eloquence? Is there a possibility that another text-to-speech engine might be used in the future? What does APH plan to do with the wireless capabilities of the unit? Could we actually be able to listen to Internet radio from a Book Port Plus? How does one navigate menus and change settings on the unit? RE: Total Recorder Pro 8.1 released
I would love to play with this program but a couple years ago when I installed the latest version, I completely lost all sounds in my system. Had to install a Braille display without speech and use it to uninstall TR. Not fun at all. The Good Old Days (Was Mp3 players)
TJ, I apologize if my comments annoyed you. I began using a computer in 1990 with a screen reader called ISOS, DOS 5.0, and Word Perfect 5.1 with 30 minutes of training on how to use a computer. Thank God for "Mastering Word Perfect" available from what was then just plain old RFB on cassette, and a Braille book on DOS 5.0 from NLS. I can remember many nights going to bed a 2 in the morning wondering of the $2500 I'd spent on a computer was a total waste. I have absolutely no trouble today using Audible, iTunes, my iPod, web-based e-mail when necessary, and Money Talks to balance my checkbook. The blind community has come a long way in 15 years. If some scripts can tell me that the Winamp equalizer is open, that I am listening to track 3 of a CD, that the title is "Mary Had A Little Lamb" and that there is 1 minute 40 seconds remaining in the track, I'll take that and be grateful. If I have to do a bit more work to make a program work, I'm quite willing to do that. I don't work for Freedom Scientific or anyone else who develops a screen reader, but those guys and gals work their tails off. I think we should be glad for what we have while striving to acquire even more. I'm sure this thread will get quite a bit longer from here and I eagerly look forward to the ride. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of TJ Olsen Sent: Monday, November 14, 2005 3:50 PM To: PC audio discussion list. ' Subject: RE: The Good Old Days (Was Mp3 players) Hi Jamie, Andrew and I along with other contributors who helped write the Winamp scripts really appreciate the fact that you find them useful even if others don't. I don't know if you've ever tried using the time marker feature? It is really good for marking spots in audio books or marking out tracks in a single MP3 which contains a whole album within it. Need help sorting out a recording issue.
I recently purchased a Dell Dimension 3000 computer with an IMAX digital audio card. This is the integrated audio that comes with the computer. I decided to make a test recording with Studio Recorder. I went into volume control, pressed the alt key, and saw that the advanced option was listed but Jaws reported it as "not available." Next I went into properties, and selected "adjust for recording." A press of the tab key brought me to a list of items including CD, microphone, line in, phones, mono out, and stereo mix. I checked all these items. I selected the appropriate microphone and unplugged my Logitech Pro 4000 web cam since this microphone seems to stay active even when I choose another. After pressing ok in the properties dialog, I came to a series of buttons including mic, CD, line in, etc. I selected microphone and made my recording. When I made my test recording, the mic sounded great. I could just hear my speech synthesizer in the background; it was barely audible. After some experimentation, I found that checking either mono out or stereo mix caused the speech to be recorded just fine, but of course my mic was mute. Choosing the microphone again caused me to be unable to record the sound of Jaws coming through my sound card. As was suggested to me by someone, I tried opening multiple instances of volume control and selecting both the mic and stereo mix, but the selections were changed in both instances of the volume control. I tried lowering my microphone volume to possibly match the level of the speech synthesizer and then normalizing the resulting recording. This did not work either. In addition, I also made sure everything in the playback portion of volume control was unmuted. Is there anything else I can try short of purchasing a new sound card? If this is necessary, we'll explore that option later. Thanks. RE: Need help sorting out a recording issue.
Actually, you will find in a message I just posted that I was able to fix the problem some what. I made sure everything was unmuted in playback, and that stereo mix was selected in the record controls. Unfortunately, I cannot adjust the volume of my microphone at this point. I can adjust the volume of Jaws, but I still find that Jaws is a bit louder than my voice after I normalize to bring volumes to an acceptable level. I've tried turning up the overall volume with studio recorder, but find that a bit problematic. Everything seems to clip when I start doing that. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Jamie Pauls Sent: Saturday, September 03, 2005 1:42 PM To: 'PC audio discussion list. Found a decent solution to my recording issues.
I am following up on my own message of last night where I was able to only record from my microphone or Jaws, not both. I've been doing quite a bit of playing around today and here's what I found. First, I made sure everything in the playback controls was unmuted and turned up to at least 50%. Next, I made sure everything was selected in the record controls and that volumes were turned up. I discovered that if I selected my microphone in the record controls, I could not record Jaws at the same time. If, however, I selected mono out or stereo mix in the record controls, I could record my microphone and Jaws. The only glitch is that I cannot adjust the volume of my microphone. Unfortunately, no matter how much I play with wav, mic, stereo mix, or mono out volumes, Jaws records noticeably louder than my microphone. I've tried adjusting the overall volume in Studio Recorder, and I've also played with the default settings in the normalize control. The result isn't bad, but it is a bit annoying. I think most people would still find a Main Menu review acceptable. They would probably mentally chastise me for not being more careful with the balance between my voice and Jaws. So basically, it is an acceptable fix, just not an ideal one. I've not installed Sound Forge on this computer, and don't know if I would have any better results with it. I have version 6. Any thoughts would be appreciated. RE: Need help sorting out a recording issue.
After doing some more tweaking, I found that setting the wav volume to five percent and then normalizing the resulting recording gave me the desired balance between my voice and Jaws. What I didn't realize was that I need to bring the wav volume to around 45 % or so to comfortably listen to the recording. I was sort of going in a circle for a while. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Jamie Pauls Sent: Saturday, September 03, 2005 2:57 PM To: 'PC audio discussion list. I would like to produce some program reviews for Main Menu. I am surprised that you would ask that question. Are you not a listener of ACB Radio's Main Menu program at all? I can't imagine not having some of the excellent audio demonstrations provided there. I just want to be a part of the action. The couple reviews I've done in the past required that I record Jaws through my speakers using a microphone. I'm surprised no one complained privately to me about it. Maybe I managed to kick out a decent demonstration or two in spite of the handicap. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Doc Sent: Saturday, September 03, 2005 5:41 PM To: PC audio discussion list. An Audio Decision That Requires Some Thought
When it was first released, I purchased Sound Forge 6 with noise reduction and Jim Snowbarger's scripts. I have since decided that Sound Forge was probably a lot more program than I really needed. I also purchased Studio Recorder which I really like for certain projects that I have worked on over the past couple or three years. As those of you who have used it know, Studio Recorder will never be the only sound editor anyone will ever use; it has some very specialized features that are quite unique to it. On my 800MHz Pentium III computer, I found Sound Forge to be a real resource hog, and Jim's scripts didn't always behave as expected. No disrespect intended, Jim, if you're reading this. My old computer's sound card was a bit ornery anyway. I have recently purchased a Pentium 4 2.66GHz computer and have installed Studio Recorder. Now for my decision, hence my request for feedback from the list. I am looking at three options. 1. Install Sound Forge 6 with noise reduction. 2. Evaluate Sound Forge 8 and pay for the upgrade, approximately $150 if I read it correctly. 3. Download and evaluate Goldwave, and possibly pay $48 for yet another audio program. >From the standpoint of accessibility and footprint, which sound editor would the majority of respondents suggest and why? Let's pretend that money is no object, which is certainly not the case. I have just promised myself that I'm not going to install and uninstall a myriad of software on this machine, so I want to plan my moves carefully. Thanks for all thoughtful responses. Thanks. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Cris Hall Sent: Friday, September 23, 2005 9:52 PM To: pc audio Subject: re: an audio decision that requires some thought Jamie, I can't give you a complete answer, because by the time I heard about sound forge, it was way out of my price range, and unless the lottery god smiles on us, it probably always will be. I do, however, use gold wave all the time, and it works extremely well with jaws, thanks to Jim Grimsby's excellent scripts. You can also use it with window-eyes, but you don't get some of the information that is available to jaws users. Gold wave does have some drawbacks. It's noise reduction is very weak, and of course, it does not have multi-track capability. You can, however, mix vocals and music with ease, and the results are, I think, quite nice. I use it for file splitting, merging and conversion, and I also record both from the Internet, and from a cassette recorder. If you work with large files, they will take a long time to process. When I work with my sixteen hour file, I know that my machine will be tied up for most of the day. The help manual is excellent, and, next to Kurzweil, it is my favourite program, bar none. For-the-people has some excellent free tutorials, which you likely won't need, but I thought I would mention them just in case. Hope this helps, Cris Hall -- No virus found in this outgoing message. RE: An Audio Decision That Requires Some Thought
Perhaps the thread is wandering a bit. I already have Sound Forge 6. I was just trying to decide whether to install SF 6, upgrade to SF 8, or abandon it entirely in favor of Goldwave. I've about decided to try Sound Forge 6 on my new computer, see how it and the scripts behave, and make my decision from there. It seems foolish to just walk away from a $300 investment without exhausting my efforts to make it work well for me. RE: Sound Forge 6.0 re-registration
I didn't think about needing new registration keys for Sound Forge 6 and the Noise Reduction program. How do I go about that here in the US? Thanks. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Jerry Richer Sent: Monday, September 26, 2005 4:51 AM To: PC audio discussion list. If you email me your Sound Forge serial number I'd be happy to contact Sony on your behalf. I've done this a few times with UK people. Chirp|Chirp|Chirp: It's the Bat, Chirping Bat .Com ! RE: Powerdvd question
Where do you find controls in Power DVD 5.5? I see nothing except Restore, Move, Close, etc. Any help would be appreciated. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Tim Crawford Sent: Tuesday, October 04, 2005 8:09 AM To: PC audio discussion list. Subject: Powerdvd question Hi, Wonder could someone tell me if there's a way to select the audio output from power dvd to go through my delta sound card rather than the default onboard sound. I've looked through the configuration settings in powerdvd, but don't see an option. Thanks, Tim. Tim, Bangor, N. RE: some dvd's not going to next track when pressing next
I find Windows Media Player about as useful as anything I've tried. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of joanne Sent: Wednesday, October 26, 2005 8:32 AM To: pc-audio Subject: some dvd's not going to next track when pressing next I'm still in the process of finding the most accessible DVD-watching program; using jaws and XP home. I am trying to learn power DVD and the VLC player, and they both have some advantages and drawbacks as far as accessibility. But one thing that happened on one of my TV episode DVD's is: no matter what I do it won't go to next episode, with either program, whether I press next or the actual number of the chapter. Is there a better and easier program than either of these 2, or are some of these DVD's just not set up to go to the next chapter or episode without some sort of mouse command that I'm not aware of? I'd appreciate any thoughts. ___ PC-Audio List Help, Guidelines, Archives and more... http://www.pc-audio.org To unsubscribe from this list, send a blank email to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] This list is a service of MosenExplosion.com. RE: some dvd's not going to next track when pressing next
Maybe a reinstall of Media Player. I had some issues with the player on my old computer. Don't know why that happens. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of joanne Sent: Wednesday, October 26, 2005 9:52 AM To: PC audio discussion list. Subject: Re: some dvd's not going to next track when pressing next Jamie, I have tried opening all my DVD's in windows media player but it keeps saying the program has encountered an error and needs to close. I'm wondering: with windows media should something in visualizations be checked or could I possibly need another video plug-in to make it work in media player? Thanks for any thoughts. ___ PC-Audio List Help, Guidelines, Archives and more... http://www.pc-audio.org To unsubscribe from this list, send a blank email to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] This list is a service of MosenExplosion.com.
