Its going to have to include something, the iPhone is falling behind the 
rest of the pack as far as Tech Specs are concerned, of course that

this issue reminds me of quality recording capacity in the last

quality recordings of lectures that later were aired on radio
stations.  with the last generation of players, I'm glad I waited for
the Book Port Plus.

To be honest I couldn't give a damn, its the OCR part which is of
interest
to me at least, this really is the first device of its kind outside the
KNFB
reader.

oh yes! after seeing the cost of the booksence when it came out i
figured this thing would cost every bit of $900 to $1000. i just 
wonder

if the media player is better than the booksence was. it has a lot of
other features that the booksence does and i just wonder if they are
improved or the same. btw: the booksence is $50 less than when it came
out a few years ago. i would have thought it would have come down a

Pioneer XW-SMA3 Wireless Music System

Hi!

I received this in the Pioneer XW-SMA3 in the mail, ordered it last Thursday so 
delivery was speedy and perhaps its just as well, the last thing anyone should 
indure is the sense of suspense over a prolonged period of time, as it happens 
we've just come out of a Long weekend - Monday was a Public Holiday which meant 
no mail deliveries which was unfortunate as I may have received the System even 
sooner but that's all by the by, I've had time to play with the Wireless System 
so time to fill you all in.

I have the sister unit to the XW-SMA3 which is the XW-SMA1 and if you know how 
to use the XW-SMA1 then you'll know how the XW-SMA3 works but there are still 
differences between the 2 models.

Firstly the XW-SMA3 has an internal rechargeable battery built-in and is 
designed to be used everywhere from the kitchen counter bench top to the 
outdoor setting at a barbecue, the large rubber dust covers on the rear 
covering the various sockets and terminals testify to that, the SMA1 doesn't 
have these covers and nor does it have the rechargeable battery, the SMA1 is 
designed specifically form bench tops, bookshelves and the like though both 
units do have carry handles so they can be easily moved.

From here on I'll be referring to the XW-SMA3 though all the text will apply to 
both the XW-SMa1 and XW-SMA3 models.

The XM-SMA3 is incredibly versatile allowing input of audio for playback from a 
wide variety of sources:
• Connect the XW-SMA3 directly via its line-in socket to a line-out socket from 
another device
• Connect your IOS device - using its charging cable - directly to the USB port 
on the XW-SMA3 which allows for full control of your IOS device as well as 
Digital Audio playback and battery charging.
• Stream to the XW-SMA3 using Airplay from iTunes, your Computer, from an IOS 
device etc, you can stream directly to the XW-SMA3 using its own Wi-Fi network 
or stream to the XW-SMA3 through your own Wi-Fi network, this means that - 
whether you're at home or away camping - you'll be able to enjoy the good 
quality sound the XW-SMA3 offers.

• Integrate the XW-SMA3 into your Home Network as a DLNA device, Windows and 
Windows Media will automatically see the XW-SMA3 and play audio content through 
it.  You can also use Windows Explorer to select your audio content for 
playback through the XW-SMA3 and so on.

The XW-SMA3 comes with a simple but yet functional remote controller, my only 
annoyance about the controller is its size - no not too big but a little to 
small -.  Thankfully the unit can be controlled using buttons on the front 
should the remote controller unit be lost.

You can control power status, volume, skip between tracks, select sources and 
play/pause, the controls seem well chosen and are pretty much what most people 
would want from a Media Player.

Volume is pleasing, not incredibly loud but loud enough without distortion, a 
good bass response, pleasant mid range and acceptable highs.

The XW-SMA3 is further enhanced by the use of the IOS/Android "Pioneer 
Controller App" which brings Internet Radio, Spotify, Pandora and so forth 
directly to the player, , the App requires some labeling of buttons but is 
fully accessible once that's done.

Are there any better Wireless Media Systems out there? When it comes to audio 
then yes there are, the Soundlink Air sounds quite a bit better than the 
Pioneer XW-SMA3 and both units are portable though the Bose system is nearly 
twice the price of the Pioneer and - even then - the rechargeable battery is an 
extra option.  Given the price tag of the Pioneer - around $250 - I would 
certainly look at this system first, even though the Bose Soundlink Air does 
sound better the Pioneer XW-SMA3 has very acceptable audio quality and will 
suit most people in most situations.

I kow. I remember this from the DM4. I don't know why they killed that stuff
in the DM6 and went back to the british lady recordings. I don't mind WMA
files of an actual human talking, but I do mind the lack of accessability.

Good point, it was just clear from the dm5 that it was more accessible with
the tts, as they gone a mile furder to include reading the time and date and
other menus wich were not totally readable with other models. Hope they will
keep going on in that fassion with this new model.

I can't speak on behalf of Win 8 but I know it works with Win 7 Home Premium at 
the very least and the latest build of the Windows Media Player that will work 
with Windows XP, the manual for the XW-SMA3 is the same for that of the XW-SMA1 
and its up on my Dropbox, has been for quite some time and I posted a link to 
the list to the file, happy to do that again if anyone wants to have a look.

I guess the really nice thing is that we can expect more AirPlay devices to 
come along for even better prices, just waiting for the technology to evolve 
into a nice quality pair of headphones, I think that's what may come out of the 
merger with Apple and Beats Electronics, the number one headphone manufacturer 
in the world today apparently.

I can't speak on behalf of Win 8 but I know it works with Win 7 Home Premium
at the very least and the latest build of the Windows Media Player that will
work with Windows XP, the manual for the XW-SMA3 is the same for that of the
XW-SMA1 and its up on my Dropbox, has been for quite some time and I posted
a link to the list to the file, happy to do that again if anyone wants to
have a look.

Hi Dane

I used to listen to the longwave band when I used to use my
ham radio, I heard more with my dipole then with my
transistor radio, I can see this band being phased out
eventually for radio stations, it will be used for aircraft
or something like that.

there's nothing much in Australia to be found and I've known
this ever since I got my first communications receiver
equipped with Long wave all those years ago , though
Australia did use Long Wave in the 20s and 30s.

The debate then was whether or not to keep using Long Wave,
those in favour of the Long Wave system pointed out the vast
distances Long Wave could travel using Ground wave thus any
signal received at the radio end was immune from the sort of
effects that Sky Wave cause, you only have to listen to
Short Wave broadcasts or broadcasts at the top end of the
Medium Wave band to know what I'm talking about here.

Those who were not in favour of the continuing use of the
Long Wave Band pointed out that Long Wave was more
seseptable to natural interference from thunderstorms
activity and so on, in any case the use of the Long Wave
band was given over to navigation beacons etc.

Hi!
There are wireless headphones out there already but the price tag is very steap.
Koss has at least two models and sennheiser has also one.
Though they're not airplay.
Regarding beats music i can't say because i haven't tried any of their models.
I have a pair of beyer dynamics wired headphones hear which is my favorites.
Will probably follow the world champion chip of football with these.

Teh Braven 650 and 570 Speaker systems are different to what we're talking 
about here, they are Portable Bluetooth 4.0 speaker systems whereas this model 
of Pioneer along with the XW-SMA1 are AirPlay systems.

I know there are Wireless headphones out here, I have 2 very nice pair of 
Senheiser sets however there is - to my knowledge - no AirPlay Wireless 
headphones around yet.

Hi!

Since there's a fair bit of interest in this Pioneer Wireless Speaker System I 
received in the Mail yesterday I thought I'd hunt up a review, actually I was 
reading reviews for the Pioneer XW-SMA4 at the time and found reference to the 
XW-SMA3 model.

I agree with pretty much everything the review says, the audio is a bit bassy 
and a little over emphasised on the mid range but the highs are there, they 
just don't stick out as much as they might with other systems.

Read the review and you'll find this all explained, there are reasons why the 
audio is like it is and then follows a discussion as to whether anything better 
could be achieved with a Wireless Speaker system at this price tag, really the 
XW-SMA3 doesn't have all that much serious competition in its price range, the 
only thing I've seen which comes anywhere near it for a similar price is the 
Thomson Wireless speaker I have but that system is not portable, it offers 
Bluetooth and AirPlay connectivity but that's as far as it goes, another story 
for another time perhaps.
