Holger,

What you want to do is straightforward enough.  

You will need-
  a.. A sound card with a stereo line input.  A second sound card would make 
life simpler, by allowing you to route the screen reader speech to the sound 
card that is NOT handling the recording input (thereby making sure that you 
don't get screen reader speech in your recording);
  b.. A stereo cassette deck and a patch cord to connect the deck to the input 
of the sound card (I know that some people on the list will argue with this, 
but 4 track books are just stereo recordings with the tracks assigned 
differently);
  c.. An audio editing program, such as Sound Forge, Goldwave or audacity.  A 
very useful feature you should look for in the audio editor is the function to 
reverse the playback of sound.  That is to say, if a track is playing 
backwards, the function will reverse it so that it plays forwards in the normal 
intelligible way;
  d.. And the most important thing you will need is time and patience because, 
even if you record 4 track books in stereo at  one and seven-eighths inches per 
second (twice the 4 track book speed), it will still be a time consuming 
process.

Over the last 15 years I have converted hundreds of 4 track recordings of 
lectures and seminars.  The process is a little complicated so I won't waste 
space describing it here.

Okay first thing which may save you a whole heap of time, have you had a look 
around to see if the books you have are available in other formats such as on 
CD, Daisy and so forth? I know that a lot of the old RNIB books for example 
have been taken from their master tapes and made available in Daisy format.

might be playing music on a mobile phone, its easy to start talking then
about accessibility with speech which can probably be handled better on a
list which is dedicated to mobile phone accessibility so the least that can
be done to try and be helpful to all concern is for someone to post details
of that list.

Well, I'm sure I'm not one of the Christopher's Adrian is referring to,
but I'm sure I'm in that illustrious class of Christopher's Dane is
talking about. Hopefully, he's not really discriminating against
everyone named Christopher just because of his feelings towards me.

I don't feel myself to be a pretend list cop. I've merely pointed out
what is clearly stated in the info for this list and provided my
opinions, with explanations, on where I think this list should go. I've
provided links to other sources of information and other lists, when
I've known about them, and when I thought someone could get more
accurate and timely information elsewhere. I worked hard to make my
statements tactful and polite and free from rudeness or criticism. I've
tried to be nothing but supportive of the moderator and even help out
where I could. In fact, I think both Tom's and Steve's messages were in
support of my statements and efforts, although maybe I misread those
messages, but I suspect it's rather a case of we're all in more
agreement with one another than maybe we realize.

I also think Dane is being a bit hypocritical in this situation. Several
times he's made bold and unequivocal statements on what is and isn't on
topic for this list, which smacks of wanting to be a moderator to me.
He's complained that others are rude and making the INTERNET a less
friendly place, and yet he posts a message like the one below.

IMHO, I think we should move on and let Tom's statement speak for
itself. We all seem to be in agreement that it's Tom's list to moderate
as he sees fit.

because, even if you record 4 track books in stereo at  one and 
seven-eighths inches per second (twice the 4 track book speed), it will 
still be a time consuming process.


Over the last 15 years I have converted hundreds of 4 track recordings of 
lectures and seminars.  The process is a little complicated so I won't waste 
space describing it here.

transferring audio tapes to cd

Hi Gang,

I see a similar subject going on here but I seem to be having a 
problem trying to do it.  I have done it in the past with no problem 
but it has been quite a while and I'm a little hazy about it all.  I 
do have CDEX and total recorder and a couple other programs.  My 
problem is however when I feed audio into the audio input jack I get 
no sound from the speakers.  I used to do it with this particular 
setup.  I'm running windows 7 64 bit and windoweyes.  I tried to do a 
diagnosis and got this message.


Both windows audio and windows audio end. builder services must be 
running for audio to work correctly. At least one of these services 
isnl't running.  This is kind of above my head.  Anybody have any 
ideas as to my problem and any easy way to fix it?

I don't recall saying anything about spending money  however I will say 
that I live by a wonderful word in my life, that word is "Convenience!", why 
put yourself out to put all this stuff onto your computer when its already been 
done and possibly at a higher quality and with better facilities that you could 
ever obtain? Certainly a fact if you're not willing to spend any money .

look around to see if the books you have are available in other formats 
such as on CD, Daisy and so forth? I know that a lot of the old RNIB books 
for example have been taken from their master tapes and made available in 
Daisy format.

Audacity works well with Jaws and is free.  However, if you are new to audio 
editing, it would be a bit difficult to learn.


Goldwave works well with Jaws and has a quite modest price tag.  Goldwave is 
also relatively easy to learn.


Sound Forge is functionally the best but is expensive to purchase.  It is 
not difficult to learn and it will work with Jaws, as long as you purchase 
Jim Snowbarger's scripts.

What you want to do is straightforward enough.

 a.. A sound card with a stereo line input.  A second sound card would

shutting of the information bar in ie nine
