Re: Recommendation on scanners.

2009-05-26 Thread Robert Nelson

If you are looking for a single sheet scanner then the most cost effective
in terms of scan quality, ease of use and cost is the HP G3110. Not sure
what the model number would be in your part of the world but look at the
site www.hp.com under scanners for home and home office. Navigation of the
site can be a bit tedious but it is worth it.

On the other hand, if you are proposing to do a lot of scanning of books or
just many sheets then you might look at a slightly different type of
scanner. After all, there is nothing more boring than sitting and scanning
one side of a book page then turning it over and scanning the second side.

I use a Canon DR2580 scanner which is the most amazing piece of technology I
have come across in a long time. It does not have the conventional glass
plate on which you lay a page and scan it. Instead it passes the page
across a scanning head and scans both sides of the page in a few seconds.
The document feeder will take about 50 sheets (depending on the thickness of
the paper). To give you an idea of the speed of the DR2580, I can scan a
1200 page law book in less than 20 minutes. It is just unfortunate that
the O C R ing of the scanned page images takes a lot longer.

For a good description of the CANON DR2580 go to www.blindcooltech.com and
search for a podcast that was put up there early last year. A search for
the character string 2580 should find it.

Yes, the DR2580 is probably more expensive than you might expect to pay but,
if your time is valuable to you, its speed and quality of output will more
than make up for that.

But how do scan a book in that scanner without tearing it up or making
a copy which takes a lot of time all by itself?
I use the Optic Book 360 -- I think they have changed the model number
-- and its very nice for scanning books. Its a book edge scanner.

thro Lexmark into the mix. I use the Lexmark 5200 and 5400 series all in one
scanners without any problems.

I have found that the Epson software is not as easy to use as the software
that comes with the Lexmark all in one units.

once installed, the software will allow you to work with openbook or
Kurzweil without any problems.

Software to Play Karaoke Disks

2009-05-26 Thread Jonathan Mosen
Hi everyone, can anyone recommend an accessible package to play Karaoke

operation is of course important, but if anyone has also successfully used
anything with a Braille display, that would be very useful to know as well.

Thanks a lot,

FW: [StationPlaylist] Version 1 of JAWS scripts for Station Playlist

2009-05-26 Thread Jonathan Mosen

Hi

Version 1 of the JAWS for Windows scripts for Station Playlist Studio have
been released.

Sttation Playlist Studio is an extremely accessible application. Almost all
of the functions can be activated using the keyboard. However, as with many
applications, it is useful to have keystrokes to read important parts of the
screen succinctly. Particularly in a broadcasting situation where gaining
an awareness of what is happening quickly is imperative, these powerful
scripts provide productivity enhancements so you can concentrate more on
what is happening in your programme rather than using the JAWS screen review
mode to locate the information you need.

The Station Playlist Studio scripts contain:

. Direct interaction with station Playlist Studio. Rather than gathering
information from the screen by using the JAWS Cursor or similar methods,
data is retrieved direct from the application. This is ideal if you do not
have the window maximised or if other applications are open as you will gain
accurate reporting of events;
. Logical keystrokes for accessing all special functions. When
appropriate, keystrokes are used with which you should already be familiar,
such as JAWS Key+T to read the title;
. Intelligent handling of time segments, reporting on-screen data in
minutes/seconds format;
. The ability to hear relevant track information without having to enter its
properties, such as the artist/title name, length and full path. This
information can also be placed in the JAWS Virtual Viewer;
. The ability to notify you when an introduction is about to end. You can
enter your preferred number of seconds for the warning;
. A countdown timer shown on a Braille display when introductions are being
played;
. Notification of the ending of a music track. You can enter your preferred
number of seconds  for the warning;
. Configurable special options using either keystrokes or through the Adjust
JAWS Options Dialog Box. Help text to describe each function in the Adjust
JAWS Options Dialog Box is provided;
. Lists providing the JAWS and application keystrokes;
. Concise messages using the correct contextual voice relative to the
information being requested;
. Braille support;
. An easy method of installation with no special setup requirements;
. Support for multiple versions of JAWS, not just the latest.

 The creation of the scripts is a voluntary project, with the scripts being
written by Brian Hartgen and concepts devised in the most part by Jonathan
Mosen who is extremely familiar with using Station Playlist Studio in
broadcasting situations. They both present weekly music programmes on the
Internet radio station entitled The Legend.

More information about the scripts, together with on-line documentation, and
of course the scripts themselves, can be downloaded from
www.hartgen.org
