Perhaps people on this list have had to deal with this situation. I have a collection of DAT tapes here so its time to sort through them all an sample what needs to be sampled to the computer and call it quits. I sold my original Denon DAT recorder some 10 years ago and I'm glad I did because I got a great price for it then. I purchased a replacement Tascam dm-30 MKII a few days ago for a very reasonable sum and I'm impressed with what it does so here's the problem. My computers (Apple Macs) have fibre optic digital in and out (the type you'll see say on a minidisc recorder where the 3.5MM input and output audio jacks double as digital input and output audio jacks). The DAT recorder has either XLR digital in and out or RCA digital in and out, not quite appropriate for what I need. So can a conversion box be built or bought perhaps to overcome this problem? If need be then I'll look at getting another sound device and (if I have to) use the trashbox (PC) to do the sampling if I have to use some sort of PCI card for the sound device, does anyone have any suggestions? Perhaps there's an external device of some sort which plugs into USB or firewire which will accept digital optical in and out and will work with a Mac as well as a PC. why don't you try the M-audio Co3 which converts fiber optics to coaxial signals and back again. DAT Recorders
I paid $200.00 for this machine. Now if anyone is thinking of purchasing a DAT then I wouldn't advise it, I have about 100 DAT tapes here but if you don't have any at all? Well chances are that this will be the "status quo" for you as DAT tapes have not been in production since 2006 and to be perfectly blunt about it, there's little point in owning one now that you can use a Mac or PC for so much in the way of audio recording. Re: Daisy books onto mp3 players
I put DAISY books onto my ZenStone MP3 player with Sound Forge but any audio recording program should work. In my case the DAISY player is Victor Reader Soft so I just set Sound Forge up to record from "What You Hear" or "Stereo Mixer" or "Mixer" or whatever it may be labeled on your sound card and start the DAISY book playing. When I've recorded what I want, I edit as wanted and save as MP3. If you're using a hardware DAISY player you will want to run the line level audio or headphone output of your DAISY player to the line level input of your sound card and record from the line level input. I don't know much about this but have you tried using a DI box to plug directly in to the dat recorder? I know that they are for guitars and basses so I don't knwo if that owuld work in your case Sarah Alawami Check out my music page at http://music.marrie.org Thanks and have a wonderful day. - Original Message - From: "Dane Trethowan" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "PC Audio Discussion List" Sent: Friday, February 15, 2008 1:37 AM Subject: DAT Recorders I paid $200.00 for this machine. Well chances are that this will be the "status quo" for you as DAT tapes have not been in production since 2006 and to be perfectly blunt about it, there's little point in owning one now that you can use a Mac or PC for so much in the way of audio recording. I believe one can purchase Daisy audio from Audiobookstand.com I don't know if they are D.R.M enabled though. You should considersigning up and purchasing the RFB&D key, or perhaps using Bookshare.org's text daisy if you want to show daisy of some kind.
