Re: A midi question

2006-01-23 Thread Ian Wells
Well now, I don't think its the MIDI player itself that is the
quality issue as the MIDI player as far as I'm aware only directs the
MIDI data to the sound device or MIDI synthesizer of your
pre-determined choice, the output device to which your MIDI play is set to etc.

Its been a while since I've played with MIDI files but I reckon the
best synth I've ever heard for MIDI stuff has been the Roland Sound
Canvas hardware version, not the software version. Software synths?
Well, they're ok as far as they go but once again, you're relying on
your computers CPU to do all the work and I'm one of those who like
to have my computer with as many resources available for my use at
any one time which increases performance etc and things such as
software speech and synthesis only over burden allot of systems.

One can buy 4 gb SD cards nowadays. However, Edirol says, that the R-09

Hi Robert, sorry that I have to bother you again but unfortunatly
another problem has arisen. I have selected the , continue multi
session button and hit enter, and as you stated brings up a window, jaws
reports, quote, select track to continue with multi session writing,
quote.now my next move was togo into windows explorer , then to the
folder holding the Mp3 tracks, then copy and paste them into this window
but it wont work this way,so how do I load this window with thenew
tracks?. I presumed I could copy and paste the tracks into this window the
same way as I did when I started the first session in the ,quote new
window where I could rename the label and check the file size etc.
What am I doing wrong ! smile. looks like senility is not far away!.

Hi,

Try pressing alt 1 from the top row of the keyboard. That's
what I do to send a selected file to the nero burn list!

Re: nero question re burning mp3 compilation

2006-01-23 Thread Robert Stokes
Hi Alan,

When the window with an Iso title opens, press Tab twice and you should land
somewhere on your C drive. You can then locate the folder containing your
MP3 files using the up and down arrow keys or by typing the first letter in
the name of the folder. Tab again and this should take you to the list of
MP3 titles and you can highlight the ones you wish to burn. I'm using Nero
Version 6, so the following instructions may be different for 5.5. If they
are the same, holding down Ctrl and pressing number 1 on your keyboard will
add the highlighted files to those in the list on your CD. Alt+R will put
you in Record menu and arrowing down once will put you on Burn Compilation.
Press Enter and the Burn Compilation window will open. Press Enter again and
the burn process should start.

It's a long time since I used Version 5.5 but I have the feeling these later
keystrokes will not be the same. If they don't work, try some variations.
I'm probably wrong but I have the feeling F2 was used.

Good luck.

Robert.

Actually, Patrick, that's not entirely true. What you have to do is read
the local papers, and check the email offers from such places as tiger
direct. That's where the good deals on compact flash cards are, and it's
that that actually shows that in the long run, compact flash is cheeper than
SD.

Re: New flashrecorder from Edirol

2006-01-23 Thread Nick G
Oh, how cute! The R09 isn't that much cheeper than the R1, and really not
at all in the long run. How funny!
Personally, I like compact flash for it's speed, it's compatibility with
Micro-drive, and I like the R1's layout. I also think the mastering, which
is missing on the R1, has so much potential that it's worth paying the extra
money, and if you do as I said in a previous message, that extra $30USD will
pay for itself.
If size is an issue, than maybe go with the R09. if not however, the R1 is
good for you.

Thanks,
Nick

Yes, but this doesn't reflect street value, now does it?
SD is taking compact flash by storm especially in the camera arina, so
it is my beliefe that SD will kill compact flash completely.

Well I think we should take it easy and see how it actually is and how knops

Hello Brian,

On Monday, January 23, 2006, 10:21:58 AM, you bellowed the following:
> The problem is more, if they use fat or fat 32 as the file system.

Yep. For example, the Edirol R1's first firmware revision only supported
fat, and now it supports fat32 formatted CF cards, but you still
have a 2GB limit on the wave format itself.
So if you want to continuously record at uncompressed PCM, it'd have to
be done with no wav header, which the R1 doesn't do. Otherwise, it'll
have to be mp3.

I have a 2GB card in mine, and I've been able to successfully fill up
the card with one mp3 at 96KBPS, which recorded for just over
47 hours continuously. Sure, the quality wasn't so great, but that
wasn't the point of the test.
In theory, you could do this with a 4GB card as well, but I haven't got
one.

Hello Brian,

On Monday, January 23, 2006, 4:19:13 PM, you bellowed the following:
> Well I think we should take it easy and see how it actually is and
> how knops and stuff are located on the unit
> because it's esential for a blind who want to do serious recordings.

Also, look at it this way. The r1 as it is doesn't take nearly the
advantage of the speed of compact flash, and SD uses way less
power.
In fact, edirol recommends not buying high speed cards because they use
more than necessary power.

As far as the mastering effect of the r1, it can be made to sound ok, but I can
definitely live without it. I'd really like to see one to see if the noise floor
has been improved as the r1 is a little bit noisy, but not as bad as,
say, the PMD-660, if some noise floor demonstrations I found online are
anything to go by.

What I do like about this unit is the low-cut filter, assuming it's at a good
range. This will fix a bunch of SPL
issues with some microphones.

As far as the price goes, I wanna see what full compass sells it for
once it's released.
They currently have the best deal on new r1's that I know of at $389.

Yes, they do. what I'm saying is you can't record without PCM headers,

Hi Rob,
The short answer is no. The cd player has to be able to read the mp3
disk. If it doesn't know what's on the cd, you'll just get noise.

Hi Patric,
But then again -
When do you need to record files of 2 gig any way?
I think they wrote that you can record 320 kbps mp3 files. It's a pretty good
quality after all. Far beyond broadcast quality.

Sound forge question

2006-01-23 Thread Brian Olesen
Hi listers,
Well can this be acomodated with Sound Forge 8?

Let's say we have an ambient audio track we want to begin at full volume. Then
after afew seconds we want it's volume to decrease about 50 %.
So what we want is to fade the sound out to half it's volume, and keep it there
for the rest of it's intire length.
Is this durable?

Thanks in advance.

Best regards

I know this is a windows media format. The problem:
When I encounter one on a web page, I get the open dialog box. (It wants me to
save the thing). I only want to listen to the stream.
What's the deal here??
Thanks in advance.

if you're using winamp, tell it not to play windows media files, and tell
windows media to play them.

That drove me nuts when I first encountered the problem.

Re: Sound forge question

2006-01-23 Thread Patrick Perdue
Bryan: you can do this with envelope fading, but that doesn'ty seem to
work too well. What you could do, and this is a rather stupid
workaround, might be to create a file of nothing but silence of just a
bit over the length of the file, then just mix it on top of the original
file using fade-on-edges, and change the destination volume to -6 DB or
lower.

I've found a few stations that stream Westwood One football
broadcasts. A fun site in this regard is www.thegamelive.com, one
which I originally discovered through an archive search of this list.

Re: Sound forge question

2006-01-23 Thread Bruce Toews
Here's what I do in Gold Wave, I'm guessing the procedure is similar in
Sound Forge. First, select the portion of the sound where you want the
fade-down to occur. Then run a fade-out on that selection to your desired
level. Then copy the time of the completion of the fade into the standard
clipboard. Set the new start of selected time to the time you just copied
to your clipboard, and the finish time to the end of the file. Now just
set your volume for the selected portion at the same level you faded down
to in the previous step.

HI Patric,
Oh this sound as a creative workaround but as far as I see it wouldn't firstly
start at a high level then fall down to a lower and remain there?

Best regards
