Subject: Iriver and Rock box

Hello,

Does anyone know for certain which Iriver model, the Rockbox developers are
working with. Specifically, is it the now discontinued
H1 series, the I F P series, or the H340? The answer to this will determine
in large part which model of the Iriver I choose to buy.

Thanks.

transferring music collection to hard drive

2005-09-14 Thread Scott Blanks
Hi folks,

I have a number of cd's that I am considering copying to my hard drive; I've
had those discs for many years and I am concerned about deterioration and/or
scratching, etc. However, I don't know what file format I should convert the
tracks into. I have free versions of Real Player and Winamp, and of course,
Windows Media. With those, I know I can choose between mp3, WMA, and
possibly another format using the newest version of Winamp. What I would
like to accomplish is converting the tracks into a high quality file that
does not take up too much space.

For those of you who have converted a large number of discs into audio
files, what format did you choose and why? Should I shell out money for a
more powerful program than the ones I've already mentioned?

Very curious,
Scott

Re: transferring music collection to hard drive

2005-09-14 Thread Matthew Bullis
Well, I use mp3 at 160 kb. However, if it is possible to tell from your
collection, you might want to put any out-of-print cd's into a lossless
compression format for archiving. Flac will do very nicely, though you'll
have to get the tracks into .wav format first. If you're going to do flac,
write in again, and I'll give further instructions. But for most cd's,
they'll probably be in print still, so mp3 should do fine.
Thanks a lot.

Re: transferring music collection to hard drive

2005-09-14 Thread Jerry Richer
Scott! Of course the best thing would be to save your CD content as
Wave files but if you can't afford the space then I would suggest that you
save them as MP3. Other formats probably yield better quality audio such as
OGG or WMA but they are no where near as popular and versatile. For example
you can't play OGG on an off the shelf CD player but you can probably play
MP3.
With MP3 the rule is, the higher the bit rate the better the audio
quality. A completely straight CD quality Wave file has a bit rate of
1,378.125 KBPS. Most people are happy with 128 KBPS and the people who want
really high quality go for 320 KBPS.
As opposed to pure Wave files an MP3 at 128 KBPS will shrink your space
requirements down to more than one tenth and at 320 KBPS will shrink your
space requirements down to more than one quarter.

Re: transferring music collection to hard drive

2005-09-14 Thread Gary Wood
Also, I hear that with Og Vorvis, you can get the same quality of recording
that you get with MP3 at 160 kbps, with 80 kbps with Og. I think that WMA
is also smaller than MP3. Also with MP3, you can get up to ten hours of
music. Virtually, an MP3 file is a tenth the size of a wav at 128 kbps. I
haven't figured out about 1600 kbps! As has been stated before, it's a
trade-off. A larger file size yields better quality, but MP3 sounds good to
me!

Re: transferring music collection to hard drive

2005-09-14 Thread Kevin Lloyd
Hi Scott.

I'm using windows media player to archive my CD collection using WMA
lossless as my choice of format.

As it says, it's a lossless format and so quality is guaranteed. Therefore,
if you want to burn to CD in the future and play on a real hi-fi system,
you're going to get the full frequency range. This is where I've noticed
the compression in MP3 files that otherwise sound great when played on a
computer or portable device.

There are other lossless formats but I think those have disadvantages. Flak
and OG aren't really supported out there in mainstream players very often
whereas WMA is and I don't think Microsoft are going to go away too quickly
so the format will be around for a considerable number of years. WAV is
uncompressed and so is larger than WMA files but even more of a disadvantage
is that you don't have any ID3 tags in WAV files.

A typical WMA lossless track of about 5 mins can be around the 30MB mark but
memory is cheap.

I convert my music down to 128kbps on the fly when loading up my portable
MP3 hard drive player so there's no problems in taking at least some of my
collection with me when I travel. You could though create MP3 files from
the WMA files by using a program like Goldwave. Because you're converting
from a lossless format, you are able to go ahead and create files in other
formats from your WMA masters without losing quality due to mixing and
matching of formats. You will of course get quality degradation by reducing
the bit rates.

So, just to be clear, I rip to WMA lossless and keep those files as my
archive masters. I store them on an external hard drive and don't touch
these again. If I want to shrink the music to take away from the computer,
I use Goldwave to create new smaller MP3 files or use the morph function
that comes with my notmad explorer software to shrink the music on the fly
as I load my Creative jukebox.

Regards.

Kevin

Re: transferring music collection to hard drive

2005-09-14 Thread Kathy and Tom
Hi Kevin. I have a dvd player. It's a Tosheba, 5 cd changer. It plays
cds, dvds, mp3s, and wma files. A friend tried to help me use the menus to
try and play an mp3 disk. The dvd player played the first 9 mp3 tracks.
Then it kept going back to the first track. I called the store where I
purchased it. They told me unless I had it connected to a tv, I wouldn't be
able to use the menus. I have a little mp3 walkman. It plays all the
tracks just fine. What do you think? Is this doable? Is there a way to

First, try copying without any anti-spyware active. If that doesn't work,
temporarily disable your anti-virus software.

Sorry to tell you but it doesn't seem to work well. May as well wait for
version 8.

RE: SUZUKI Q-CHORD

2005-09-14 Thread Andre Van Deventer
Hi Dean and all

I would consider the q-chord as not only some kind of toy. I think it
actually has real potential as a serious musical instrument.

I may be considering buying one of them if I can get hold of it here in SA!

I call it the musical instrument for those of us who can't play a real
instrument. It's actually very nice. They call it a digital songcard
guitar. It has many of the virtues of the autoharp but it's more powerful,
also electronic. Also, perhaps borderline for this list.

My prefered format is mp3 - as opposed to the Windows WMA with 320 bit rate
because despite the compression quality deterioration is barely
noticeable. Remember that with this bit rate file size is reduced by
roughly 75 percent after conversion.

Re: question about Roxio 7?

2005-09-14 Thread Deenadayalan Moodley
Hi,

I must point out that I use Roxio 6 and Nero 6 and Norton and experience no
problems.

Roxio does take some setting up. You will need to go to the tools menu and
run the system test for it to work well.

You can not have InCD or DragItToDisk on the same machine. Normally when I
install Roxio I select a custom installation and remove DragItToDisk. That
way you will can run both Roxio and Nero.

Thanks.

2005-09-14 Thread Gary Wood
Hi Angel! I don't know if this helps, because I don't use Roxeo. I also
use Nero; but I heard that Roxeo has gotten less and less accessible with
every new version. Now of course, some people say that whether something is
accessible depends on the person, but I like Nero 5.5! I hope this is of
some help!

Hi Shannon. Viavoice comes with the program! I've never seemed to have any
trouble like that when I've installed it! I hope you can get it installed!
