Re: size of audio files

2005-09-09 Thread Gary Petraccaro
Volume control is very important. I've heard lots of oldtime radio shows
ruined by over recording.
What's worse, there's no way to fix what's called clipping.

  Thanks Gary and Jay,
  Here's what I have,:

When I was beginning to learn, I recorded a tune from a cassette tape to a
.wav file using recall pro. Converted it to .mp3 using GoldWave. The size
of the .mp3 file is 4,390. Winamp shows 320kbit, 48000 hz stereo.

I downloaded the same tune as .mp3 from the internet. The size of the .mp3
file is 1,880. Winamp shows 128kbit, 44100 stereo.

The length of the tunes in time are very close, 8 seconds. The volume of
the one I recorded is too high; somewhat distorted. Otherwise the quality
  is not much different.

Questions: I'm now using GoldWave to record mostly. How can I control the
bit rate and the hz when recording with GW? Is there a good way to adjust
record level? If I either record in mono or convert to mono, will files be
  smaller?

Thank you Gary, Jay, and anybody else, for your helps.

  Howard

Subject: iRiver h340 manual anyone?

Hi There,

If anyone has an electronic version of the iRiver h340GB mp3 player manual,
could you please send it to me? If not, could you tell me where I might be
able to get this manual from. If I could get a text version, that would be
perfect but I don't mind if it is in another computer format as I'll
probably be able to convert it anyway. Thanks in advance,

Winamp Library

2005-09-09 Thread eoconnor
Hi Anita,

Have you listened to Dave William's review of Winamp 5.08 on the Main Menu
archive? It's a two-part review from last September, which looks in depth
at the Winamp library.

I'm not very familiar with the program, so I can't answer your question
about searching.

>From memory though, I think Dave said there's no search button. In other
words, once you start typing something into the library's edit field, a
search automatically commences based on your criteria. I think this
applies if you're online and looking for radio stations.

In order to hear the program, you can tgo to
www.acbradio.org/mainmenu.html and follow the re-direct link.Then use
the find command to look for Winamp. The most recent shows are nearer the
top of the page.

hope this helps.

Regards from a very wet Dublin,

Eamonn

Sound Forge 8 and Precise Editing

2005-09-09 Thread Nolan Crabb
I've been using Sound Forge 8 for about two months now, and I'm struggling
with an editing issue I hope someone here can help me solve.

I can't get it to select very small amounts of data when I do a Shift+Right
or Shift+Left arrow. I can get it to move in tiny increments when I just do
a left or right arrow to move through the file, but I want to be able to
edit out single syllables and other tiny points in an audio file. I've done
a series of Shift+Up arrows to decrease the amount of the selection, but
nothing I do seems to help.

What frustrates me most is that the setting is almost certainly right in
front of me, staring at me larger than life, so to speak. But I can't
figure it out to save me. I desperately need to do precise edits with this
program the way I could with Sound Forge 5. I'm working on another audio
Christmas project for my kids this year, and I need to edit the job with
real precision. Please, any Sound Forge users out there with any ideas or
even speculation, chime in. And if this is such a narrow topic that it
doesn't help the majority on the list, please don't hesitate to reply
privately. I've spent hours in the preferences menu trying to figure out
what would give me the option of very small incremental selections with
Shift+Right Arrow and such, and it's not jumping out at me at all.

Best Wishes,

Nolan Crabb

Voice Processing

2005-09-09 Thread Tony Swartz
Listers,

Using Total Recorder, I am attempting to create voice overs. I would like
to add a slight bit of reverb to the recording and am wondering if anyone is
aware of
any relatively inexpensive software which would allow for the addition of
effects either while recording or playback. Googling, I did find quite a few
freeware and shareware programs, but all have their own recording module,
and most were pretty inaccessible. I did write to High Criteria, and
responding with a form email, they did mention that they would consider it
for a future add on, but it doesn't seem that it will be available soon.

Any suggestions would be deeply appreciated.

Thanks,
Tony Swartz

Over the last few years we've collected a list of our favorite software
programs that fit well with our products. We've gathered these all onto one
page at

http://www.nextup.com/partners.html

Many of these have downloadable trial versions, and offer functionality that
really work well with our programs or fit well with the interests of our
typical users. This month we'd like to highlight two of these programs in
particular:

AV Voice Changer provides a variety of audio effects capable of drastically
altering the sound of a voice, either live out of TextAloud or within an mp3
file. This gives you virtually an unlimited number of sounds or
personalities you can create.

Acoustica MP3 CD Burner is a full featured CD burner capable of taking MP3
files created by TextAloud and our other programs and burns them onto audio
CDs which can be played back in any CD Player.

Other programs on our partners page include functions from Translation,
Telephone Answering, Creating Talking Pictures, Recording Radio Shows, and
editing audio files. Please check out all of these interesting products at

Fw: Winamp Question.

2005-09-09 Thread Dana S. Leslie
Anita,

I forgot to add, once you've typed your search string into the edit field I
described. one tab beyond the edit field is a clear search button, and one
more tab beyond that is the list box of the results of your search. There's
no search button to press; it's one of those search engines that just goes
ahead and lists everything it finds in its database that matches the search
string you type into the edit field, as limited by the selection on the
treeview.

Again, if you find this difficult to negotiate (I wouldn't want to try doing
so with only speech access), skype me over the weekend, and I'll try to talk
you through it.

Re: Winamp Question.

2005-09-09 Thread Dana S. Leslie
,Anita, Robert,

In my experience, after one has opened the library with alt-l and tabbed
once to the library button, one must press the spacebar on the library
button before one can arrow down to the remove missing media, add media to
library, or other functions.

But, in any case, if all one ultimately wishes to do with the library is to
scroll through a list of the media files already on one's computer and
select what to play from there, it is far simpler, I find, to ignore the
library, all together. Instead, from the winamp main window, press shift-l.
One is then presented with a tree view of one's hard drive. browse the
treeview till you come to the folder in which you store your media. You can
click on the folder to load the entire contents of the folder into a
playlist, or you can continue to browse your music folder till you find the
particular subfolder containing just what you want to play. If all you want
to play is a single track, not a folder full of tracks, start the whole
process with the l (rather than shift-l) command, and browse the slightly
different interface till you find the track you want to play, and click on
it.

In either of these ways, you can ignore the continually losing focus and

Re: Winamp Question.

2005-09-09 Thread Dana S. Leslie
Anita,

from the Winamp main window, press alt-l. Then, tab three times. This will
place you in an edit field into which you can type the search string you
want to find. However, it will search only the subsection of the library
highlighted on the treeview that is one tab back from the edit field. And,
this treeview is very difficult to negotiate in the new version of Winamp.
JAWS continually loses its focus when you tab away from this treview and
back to it. You continually have to use the JAWS cursor to find this tree
view once again, and route pc to JAWS. This is the major reason (but not the
only one) why I think the Winamp library is more trouble than it's worth.
but, if you want to try to figure it out, skype me over the weekend, and
I'll try to talk you through it.

How is switching from Real to Real alternative supposed to allow you to play
Real Audio streams in Winamp? Someone suggested the same thing to me when I

Re: Sound Forge 8 and Precise Editing

2005-09-09 Thread Graham Stoodley
Nolan, out of my limited Sound Forge 8 experience, just up-arrow or
down-arrow changes the zoom rate for how much the right or left arrows
move the cursor. If you still have trouble, perhaps marking the
beginning of the portion to be deleted with the letter I, and the end
with the letter O might work for you in making the selection. The I
and the O are for marking in and out, and seem to have replaced the
left and right brackets that worked in earlier versions of SF.

Good luck.

Subject: Sound Forge 8 and Precise Editing

I've been using Sound Forge 8 for about two months now, and I'm
struggling
with an editing issue I hope someone here can help me solve.

I can't get it to select very small amounts of data when I do a
Shift+Right
or Shift+Left arrow. I can get it to move in tiny increments when I
just do
a left or right arrow to move through the file, but I want to be able
to
edit out single syllables and other tiny points in an audio file.
I've done
a series of Shift+Up arrows to decrease the amount of the selection,
but
nothing I do seems to help.

What frustrates me most is that the setting is almost certainly right
in
front of me, staring at me larger than life, so to speak. But I can't
figure it out to save me. I desperately need to do precise edits with
this
program the way I could with Sound Forge 5. I'm working on another
audio
Christmas project for my kids this year, and I need to edit the job
with
real precision. Please, any Sound Forge users out there with any
ideas or
even speculation, chime in. And if this is such a narrow topic that
it
doesn't help the majority on the list, please don't hesitate to reply
privately. I've spent hours in the preferences menu trying to figure
out
what would give me the option of very small incremental selections
with
Shift+Right Arrow and such, and it's not jumping out at me at all.

Best Wishes,

Nolan Crabb

got the crossfading to go out over the air, but no vocals.

2005-09-09 Thread Byron Stephens
Thanks to those who suggested running the sam encoders from within the dsp tab
of the sqr crossfading plugin. It worked, but now I have a different problem,
when I went back to listen to the archives of the test cast I did, I heard no
vocals on my part, and I know I did them. I use the line recording plugin, so
is there something I should be unchecking in the sqr crossfader options in
orger to get my vocals heard over the air?

Re: got the crossfading to go out over the air, but no vocals.

2005-09-09 Thread Chris Skarstad
hi

ok, when you say vocals, are you referring to the vocals in the music, like
you can hear the music, but no vocal with it, or are you referring to your
own voice between songs?
typically when you talk between songs it's known as a voice break. if
that's the case, make sure that your sound card is selected in the sam
encoders. in the context menu for the sam encoders, there's a sound cardsub
menu. the default is audio pipeline. but you should also see a listing for
your sound card. you'll want to use that. at least this is how i do it, i
don't use the line recording plugin so maybe the process is different for that.

2005-09-09 Thread Brent Harding
I found a neat way of getting the crossfading tighter. I'm not sure why it
works, but if you set your main dsp to rock steady and the one in sqr to
sound solution it seems to sound more like a professional fade. This tends
to bring out the noise below the music a lot though, and I did turn the
preemphasis off, (not sure why I'd want that anyways).

Well, I've used it briefly, but can't really say that I have solid info
for you. I used my arrows to move from track to track, but only guessed
that that was what it was doing. I managed to get a metronome going and
record a few over dubs but couldn't quite tel you how I did it. R is

Strange, right?, I hate it too. But if you learn more, share it.

,Anita, Robert,

If all you want
to play is a single track, not a folder full of tracks, start the whole
process with the l (rather than shift-l) command, and browse the slightly
different interface till you find the track you want to play, and click on
it.

In either of these ways, you can ignore the continually losing focus and
difficult to negotiate library, all together.
