trouble with hurl.asf files and winamp vs media player
Hi all. I'm new to the list and new using winamp. I'm on a mailing list for a radio program which has links to amazon.com where I can listen to samples of what they're going to play next program. Before I got winamp and made it default player, no problem. Now that winamp is the default player, and I click on a link to play a selection from amazon.com it asks me if I want to save or open the file hurl.asf. I've tried both and winamp doesn't play the audio at all, so I figured out that I could hit escape from the dialogue box, click on the link again, and media player would play it, but when I'm done with it and close it out, it causes an error in the copy of internet explorer I'm reading my mail in from Yahoo. I have to send or don't send the error report, close it out, reopen it and go back to my inbox. Any answers? Besides making media player my default player again? I kind of like winamp otherwise. Re: Recording with sound recorder
Hi, Shannon, sound recorder only records in .wav format, and does so for only a minute at a time, so, if I were you, I'd either get total recorder, either the professional version, which is about $40, or the standard version which is about $13. You can go to http://www.highcriteria.com to learn more or purchase this, or, get recall pro for about $40 the last I knew from http://www.sagebrush.com. I don't have recall pro, but I have the standard version of total recorder, and can't say enough good things about it. Re: Recording with sound recorder
Hi Shannon. It sounds like you may be interested in a program called TextAloud. This program allows you to convert a text file directly into an MP3 file that you can then download to a portable player. There are a number of voices you can choose so you wouldn't need to record your speech synthesizer reading your text in real time, you can convert in a fraction of the time. You can download an evaluation copy of TextAloud and give it a go before you buy. If you have HTML pages that you also wish to record and play later, you can save them as text files before converting them to MP3 with TextAloud. Re: Nerro info recall
Using Nero to burn a compilation from tracks stored on your hard drive 1. Start Nero from the desktop or programs menu. 2. Select CD from the choice of medium that can be written to by Nero. Tab to Next and press enter. 3. Select "compile a new CD" from the radio buttons. Tab to Next and press enter. 4. Now choose the format of the CD you would like to burn. Select Audio from the radio buttons if you want a CD that will play in standard CD players or select Data if you want a CD that will be used to contain MP3 tracks that will only be played in an MP3 player. Tab to Next and press enter. 5. Press enter on the Finish button and the compilation window will be in focus. 6. Use the keystroke windows + E to start Windows Explorer. 7. Locate the tracks you wish to add to your compilation by browsing the folders on your hard drive where they reside. 8. For selected tracks, use the keystroke control + C to copy them to the clipboard. 9. Press alt + tab to bring the Nero compilation window back into focus. 10. Use the keystroke control + V to paste the tracks into the compilation. 11. Repeat steps 7 through 10 until you have added all of the tracks you want to include in your compilation. 12. You may now want to reorder the tracks in your compilation. To do this, use the keystroke control + X to cut the track to the keyboard then use the up and down arrow keys to locate the track that you wish to immediately follow the track you've just cut to the clipboard. Use the keystroke control + V to paste the track into the compilation and it will then appear at this point. NOTE: this reordering is only possible if you have chose audio format and not possible for data format. 13. When you are ready to burn your compilation, close all running applications so that Nero is not competing for your computer's resources. 14. To burn the compilation, press alt + F to open the file menu and then press W to open the Burn dialogue. 15. Tab to the Burn button and press enter. - Original Message - From: "Azhar khan" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Thursday, June 10, 2004 3:10 PM Subject: Nerro info recall Hello everyone,Can someone please paste the discription n steps given in here about Nerro several days back by Mr.Loyad or someone else which had steps how to do several things on Nerro with very easy simple path,i have saved em in my documents but due to my window crashing last night, lost em all so if anyone please paste em in here or can send em on my way off the list? Many thanks in advance! Re: Nerro info recall
Using Nero to copy a CD 1. You can configure Nero to present the new compilation dialogue in preferences. To do this: a. Press Alt + F to open the File Menu. b. Arrow down to Preferences and press enter c. Press spacebar on the first checkbox to check start with New compilation d. Tab to the OK button and press spacebar to save the settings. 2. Now when you start Nero, you will see the new compilation dialogue and you will be placed on the multisession tab. 3. To copy a CD: a. Press shift + tab until you reach the combo box that allows you to select what task you wish to perform. This will usually be defaulted to CD-ROM which is used for data compilations. b. Arrow down in the list until you reach CD-Copy c. You will now be placed in the Burn tab. If you have used Nero to copy a number of CD's you won't need to change anything on any of the other tabs but it is useful to review the details. d. Press shift + tab until you reach the Burn tab and then use your left arrow to move through the tabs until you reach the Image tab. e. Use the tab key to review the controls on this tab. The only two real controls of interest are the "Delete image after burning" and the path to which the image file will be saved. If you are unlikely to burn multiple copies of CD's at a given time then it is recommended that you check the delete image control. However, if you do wish to burn multiple copies of a CD then you may wish to save the image and burn from this later rather than have Nero read the source CD again to perform the subsequent copies. f. Press tab until you reach Image tab again and use the right arrow to review the next tab. g. The Copy Options tab again has two controls that are of interest. The "on the fly" control and the combo box that allows you to select which of your drives will be used for the source CD. Best results are obtained by allowing Nero to create an image of the source CD so it is advisable to uncheck the "on the fly" control. Ensure that the drive where you have inserted your source CD is selected in the combo box. Nero will already have detected your burner. h. Press tab until you reach Copy Options tab and then use the right arrow key to review the next tab. i. Most of the controls on the Read Options tab will be set as required by default. However you may wish to tab to the "Use jitter correction" control and check this to obtain best results. This will slow the copy down but it' s worth the extra time needed to get the best copy possible. j. Press tab until you reach Read Options tab and use the right arrow to review the controls on the next tab k. The Burn tab has a number of controls of interest. Best results are obtained by checking the check box for "Determine maximum speed" and "Simulation". Check the check box to "Write" check box and select the speed at which you wish to burn in the combo box. Best results are achieved by slowing the burn down as slow as your patience will allow. Set the write method to disc-at-once if it is not already selected, set the number of copies as appropriate and tab to the Copy button. l. If you have your source CD and a blank CD in your drives, press spacebar to begin the Copy. 4. It is advisable to close all other running applications before starting the burn as the process is very processor intensive. 5. If you would rather not have Nero start with the new compilation dialogue or you accidentally dismiss the dialogue before starting the copy, you can open the dialogue from the file menu. a. Press alt + F to open the File Menu b. Arrow down until you reach CD-Copy and press enter c. Follow the instructions as outlined above 6. If you have the Nero wizard enabled then you will see a subset of the controls detailed here but for those that are offered to you by the wizard, the same principles apply. Re: cd levels.
Hi. If you tend to create compilations from MP3 tracks stored on your hard drive I would recommend MP3GAIN. This is a free program and is the only program I've been happy with doing this task as normalisation is not quite the same thing as setting volume levels to be the same. Re: which is better format
Hi Ron. This is a pretty loaded question as there are many factors and preferences to be taken into account. Personally, I rip using the Lame MP3 encoder at 320kbps. This gives me as close to CD quality as possible and I have plenty of hard disc so don't have to worry about file sizes. I do have a portable player so if I need to load more music than it's modest 10GB hard disc will take, I use CDEX to re-encode down to a level that I'm happy with, for example 192kbps. As I always keep the 320kbps masters which I've cleaned up and set volumes to be the same, there's no great loss in quality in re-encoding down to a lower bit rate to my portable player when required. Hi Kevin. I have my CDex set to 128 K. I thought that was supposed to be CD quality. Maybe I'm not sure, but when I went into Soundforge, it classed 128 K as CD quality. - Original Message - From: "Kevin Lloyd" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "PC audio discussion list. Re: which is better format
When it comes to compressed audio, there is no such thing as TRUE CD quality. The best one can hope for is near CD quality, and what constitutes "near enough" depends on the listener. For some of us, 128K is fine. Others require 192 or even 300, it's a matter of choice. If I want to do any kind of editing, I try to stay away from anything that was compressed at all in the first place. strange thing happened when streaming
Hi all, I had a strange thing happen to me while I was streaming, and want to ask about it, and that is, that I had been streaming since 13 minutes after noon, so, it becme 22 minutes after 7, which meant I had been streaming for 7 hours, and so, I wanted to wrap up the stream, and play my 21 song playlist, and so I started it, but when I went to the system tray to see how many listeners there were, I heard the first song stop, and then when I tried up arrowing with my inverted arrows, not knowing what was going on, all of a sudden, I heard a beep, which sounded like the ethernet card, or something like that, and then I heard the computer re-boot, and at first, I couldn't connect to the internet, but a few minutes later, I was able to connect, but on this 98 se system with 192 megs of ram, and a 400 megs processor, with winamp 2.92, the shoutcast plugin version 1.80, and the shoutcast server 1.92, I wonder what this means? I don't want my listeners to have to turn up their volumes, so, I have the music track bar, the mike track bar, and the fade duration track bar as loud as they'll go, and those people who were listening, said it sounded nice and punchy like a radio station, yet, I can't listen to the file that was recorded, because it was only 0 kb, and you'd think, that at least some of the file was recorded, so what is the nature of what I have described? Thanks in advance, very much for helping.
