Kathy! For a couple of years now the Sony MZB-100 has been the
portable hi-fidelity recorder of choice for blind people. It's one big
drawback is that you can't transfer it's recordings to computer except
through recording them again on the computer. The newer models will have

still waiting. Sony thinks that playing music is more preferred than
recording it so they're going in this direction. The MZB-100 from Chirping

RE: MP3 Ipod

2004-06-10 Thread Aman Singer
Hi.
Unfortunately, the Ipod isn't very accessible. All the buttons on
the newer units are touch-sensitive, and provide no tactile feedback. This
might not be insurmountable, but the unit will not speak. The only sounds
that'll be coming out of it will be those of the mp3, once you play it.
Further, the software isn't very accessible. To the best of my knowledge,
you must use the Itunes software (someone correct me if I'm wrong on this,
as I heard some rumblings about Apple switching to a less proprietary
interface, but am not sure if that happened or is going to). There are
better and more accessible players. If accessibility is important to you,
and you want to play only MP3 files, try some of the units from Archos.
These units, with the help of an alternative firmware called Rockbox
http://rockbox.haxx.se
speak their menus, as well as spelling file names and speaking the
names of folders. If you want to play more formats, like OGG and WMA, your
best bet is to go with one of the Iriver units
http://www.iriveramerica.com
which, though they do not speak their menus or file/folder names,
are good players and will play more formats than the Archos units. Both
units come in the same capacities as the Ipod and, as a side benefit, are
usually far cheaper.

Hi Tom,

I know this doesn't answer your question but if you don't like
RealPlayer you have two other options. First of all there is Real
Alternative which you can download from
www.whitestick.co.uk/download.html and also JetAudio available from
www.jetaudio.com/products/jetaudio. I haven't tried either of these
programs so I don't know how accessible they are.

Recording with sound recorder

2004-06-10 Thread shannon
Hello listers,

I am new to this list and am looking for information on how to use the sound
recorder.
I have a Win 2000 pro machine.
In particular I have a screen reading program to read the text on the
screen. What I am looking to do is record my screen reader to a audio file
so I can then transfer it to a portable device such as a MP3 player.

I have been playing with the sound recorder and am some what able to
accomplish this but the quality is less than desirable i.e. allot of static
sound.
Can anyone help me with this task?
Your help will be greatly appreciated.

Re: Recording with sound recorder

2004-06-10 Thread shannon

Hello Doc,

What I am trying to do is record my screen reading program while it is
reading a document or html document.
I am legally blind and can't read the print.
I have downloaded a few books in text format and would
like to record my screen reading voice to a audio file so I can put it on a
disk and make it portable. The computer is much too heavy to carry around.

Do you know how I can acomplish this?
Like I said earlier I was able to get the sound recorder under
accessories/entertainment to do this but it is a really bad coppy when
played back in Windows media player 9

There seams to be alot of static in the play back. Is this because of the
Windows Media player or the actual recording?

Hi.
It is true that Archos is no longer producing the players that work
with the accessible rockbox firmware. However, many of these are available
both used and new from Ebay. I've also heard of a few people in the UK
buying them new from there and am sure that, with persistence, American
online suppliers may be found.

Olympus dm1 and dm10

2004-06-10 Thread Kathy Szinnyey/Fred Otto
Hi again! My thanks and appologies for not remembering who sent that very
wise warning about the Olympus dm20; looks like I won't be buying that one!
But I'm wondering if anyone knows if the dm10 is more similar to the dm1
than it is to the dm20? I'm also gathering that the dm1 is pretty blind
user friendly? My biggest concern, besides being able to have access to the
functions, is that the ability to record voice in stero, which I'm guessing
all the dDM models do. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm not so
attached to Olympus, really, but so far it's the recorder that's caught my
attention.

2004-06-10 Thread shannon work
Kathy,

Please foregive me but I only joined this list this morning, what are you
talking about?
What kind of speech are you trying to record?
I have posted a question about recording my screen reading voice while it is
reading a document, is that some thing that this "olympus" thing could do?
Where can I read about this thing you are talking about?
Sorry for the repeating of your issue.
Thanks,
Shannon

Shanon, the Olympus dm10 and dm1 are digital recorders, much like a cassette
recorder or minidisk recorder, and it also plays mp3's. And they appear to
be far cooler than cassettes or minidisks.

You will need to configure it with the sample and bit rate you want, the higher
the better.

You can fine it under input plugins under preferences.

Dee Jay Microphone recommendations...

2004-06-10 Thread Mac Norins
Hello PC Audio Listers!

I am a novice Dee Jay, looking for recommendations for microphones, for
shoutcasting, live radio broadcasting, etc. I have heard of the
Electrovoice RE 20 and some other R C A mikes. I know very little about
what I am doing with all of this, but it might be sufficient to say that I
plan to create my broadcasts on CD, using playlists, crossfading and the
like, in order to keep my broadcasts rather "hands free".
 Any suggestions?

Re: Olympus dm1 and dm10

2004-06-10 Thread Michael Lang
Hi Kathy,

As much as I know, the DM-10 is a DM-20 with just 64 megs of built-in
memory, instead of the 128 megs, the DM-20 has.

With the DM-1, you cannot record in stereo. The DM-1 can only record in
the DSS format, while the DM-20 can use DSS or WMA (Windows Media
Audio). Note, that even the DM-20 isn't very good for music recordings,
because the highest recordable frequency is 7500 Hertz. Olympus
deliberately limited the frequency spectrum, to avoid problems with the
music industry. The best stereo recorders are the already mentioned
Minidisc business machines MZ-B100 and MZ-B10 and the Plextalk PTR1.

Sanyo has a couple of conference recorders, which can record in MP3
stereo. They have the same frequency limitations as the Olympus
recorders, but they're nevertheless interesting. To get more information
about these recorders, do a Google search for ICR-b160, ICR-B170 or
ICR-B180.
