Hi,

Now, I am trying to install to 2 different workstations, using same

- HP z620 with Xeon E5
- Asus X399 motherboard with AMD 1950X Threadripper

After a few seconds, both machines give same message "BTX halted"

See screehsots https://imgur.com/a/pXMKn

I tried setting BIOS to legacy mode and UEFI mode.

Right now both machines are running FReeBSD 11.1-RELEASE.

From both, I am able to boot a FreeBSD installer, both in legacy mode
and UEFI mode.

I wonder why it boots fine from the ThinkPad, and not from the other 2
machines.

Is there anything I need to do in order to have the image boot?

Intention is to reinstall the fully configued Oi/OmniOS from this iso
for disaster recovery with the help of the regular installer process.

I have done this in the past with a Linux appliance where this was
part of the distribution and where you are able to create a bootable
installer DVD on the fly to restore the system after a crash or to go
back to a former state. Simple and genious. A bootable USB stick can
be easily created from the iso with the Rufus tool.

Good morning,

But to uninstall driver/graphics/nvidia, I also had to remove xorg-
video (meta package).

During the 'bootadm update-archive -R /mnt' step, it reported that the
driver was 32-bit and would be excluded.

After that, and a reboot, lightdm won't start.

Xorg works, running startx when logged in gives me a nice twm desktop.
Also, Xorg.0.log states that the nvidia driver 304.137 is actually in
use.

But lightdm -not so much.
 From /var/log/lightdm/seat0-greeter.log :

** Message: 07:24:18.123: [Configuration] Reading file:

Which is odd, since it used to work.
Using ldd on /usr/sbin/lightdm-gtk-greeter, it reports:

basename link usr/lib/mesa/libEGL.so.1 pkg:

Looking closer at these, it seems that only the files from "mesa" are
actual files. The others are just symlinks.
These are the 'real' ones:

root@emu:/usr# ls -l lib/mesa/libEGL.so.1
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 15 aug. 23 12:52
lib/mesa/libEGL.so.1 -> libEGL.so.1.0.0

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 15 aug. 23 12:52
lib/mesa/amd64/libEGL.so.1 -> libEGL.so.1.0.0
-r-xr-xr-x 1 root bin 224736 aug. 23 18:32
lib/mesa/amd64/libEGL.so.1.0.0

root@emu:/usr/lib/mesa/amd64# file libEGL.so.1.0.0
libEGL.so.1.0.0:ELF 64-bit LSB dynamic lib AMD64 Version 1,
dynamically linked, not stripped, no debugging information available

So it seems that the files are there, but the symlinks are incorrect.

It looks like the libs from the mesa package are never found.

What could be the cause of this and how do I fix it?

TIA,

[OpenIndiana-discuss] Gimp 2.10.20 possible bug

2020-09-12 Thread bscuk2

Dear All,

I was using Gimp version 2.10.20 and I noticed a problem. When scaling a
graphic the program became confused. To increase the size and scale of
the graphic, making it bigger actually made it smaller and vice versa.
Testing the same version on windows everything works as intended.

Hi guys,

Using nvidia-settings, it's not possible to choose a higher resolution

[OpenIndiana-discuss] Webkit2 on oios

2021-01-27 Thread bscuk2

Dear All,

I have been trying to install webkit2 and slick greeter on the current
version of oi. I am having difficulty. The lack of information available
for Oi makes it difficult to know if lightdm needs updating or there are
some extra dependencies required outside of the repository ? Has anyone
had success installing this package?

It would certainly be an asset if it could find its way into the repository.

I was using OI because I knew that Solaris 10 u8 would dump core, but I
*thought* this had been fixed in OI/Illumos. All I want to do is put a UEFI
label on it so I can use it with u8.

It boggles my mind that I would get a seg fault after all these years. That
was always my favorite bug fix because it was so easy. At least it is if you
can recompile the code. The overhead cost of being able to build OI is simply
more than I am willing to pay. I did get it to compile once *many* years ago,
but I never got a response when I asked on the developer list how to test the
new kernel.

But then again, I now find myself in a world where it is proclaimed "racist"
to insist that 2+2 = 4.

So time to take OI down and move the disk to Debian to label it.

Sigh..
Reg

Hipster 2017 is 4 years old, please use current version. If it still is dumping
core, please file issue/let us know.

toomas

Any ideas and suggestions are welcome.

Maybe it's not switched on in the mixer ?

I tried
$ audioctl set-control -v mic 100

But that only increased the level, and the noise with it.

I suppose that's what you mean by "mixer"?

No, I meant the equivalent of the Gnome audiomixer, Linux alsamixer,
don't know what's that on Mate now. Should be somewhere in the desktop
menu.

Yeah, that's the mate-volume-control thingy I mentioned earlier. It's at
100% for the mic volume.

Some BIOSes also have an option to switch audio devices, usually it says
'Use AudioHD' or similar. It should be switched to the AudioHD device,
if it has such.

I'll check that and report back.

[OpenIndiana-discuss] Insufficient Disk space for updates reported

2021-07-10 Thread bscuk2

Dear All,

After recent updates this is the information on the system. Insufficient
disk space available (648.02 MB) for estimated need (2.48 GB) for
Download cache

The disk is a Samsung Pro 250 SSD M.2 with an estimated 71 GB used in total.
I have deleted legacy snapshots, files etc but not further space is detected.
After running PKg rehydrate, fix etc the situation has not improved.
I am wondering if the disk space is not been reported correctly, memory swaps,
or connected with Bob Friesenhahn current threat on system monitor issues ?
I am not a developer but would appriciate any advice on how to proceed.

Regards,

Robert

Dear All,

I have used the Beadm Destroy -s tool to manually remove backup copies
and liberated much needed space. Then used update and fixed some errors
with pkg fix .

Everything seems to be back to normal. This to me is a good educational
exercise in solving such issues in the future.

Thank you for your help.

Hello bscuk2

You have about a Years worth of boot environments.

To reclaim used disk space use beadm destroy to delete old boot
environments.

You can use beadm list to show the boot environments of the System.

Boot environments are created as part of the update proces to make
updates Atomic.

Unfortunately you will have to go through this manually or with a
shell script loop now.

I heavily advise against using snapshot pruning ontop of boot
environments. This is likely to get your system killed if configured
bad. Boot environments are also not snapshots, but clones of the
dataset. So snapshot pruning will not delete them.

Hope this helps

[OpenIndiana-discuss] System update unable to boot

2021-08-29 Thread bscuk2

Dear All,

I update my system and also experienced difficulties in starting the
system. The system either gavea message outlining failure to find zfs or
rpool on boot up and booting into black screen. I have reflashed the
bios and managed to restore a booting system.

Hope this helps for anyone experiencing the same issues.

Speaking of which: some of these projects are opensource, others
are proprietary - even if distributed by authors for free.

Is there any lineup of such products as Java, Adobe Reader and
Flash, OpenOffice or its more current descendants, Mozilla stuff,
VirtualBox (GPL half, at least) - what may be redistributed how?

For example, whenever a new JDK/JRE comes out, can we publish its
files into the OI IPS repo as a new version of the appropriate
package, or the license states that the end-user must download
the software from original vendor's site (like in VBox PUEL)?

I don't think it is a fundamental problem to fire up a repository
of third-party software which would suck in and republish as IPS
the tarballs and packages made by other projects (like Mozilla,
Java, VirtualBox, etc.etc.etc.) - if we know we're not to be sued
for making such a repo. Possibly this can be done as part of the
existing SFE or SFE-encumbered repos (skipping the manual build
part by the repo maintainer)?

For projects with well standardized releases, sucking-in of the new
versions can be quite automated (similar to spec files or recipes
in the userland gate), and end-users would have a simple automated
means of receiving the new software in a timely manner...

Re: [OpenIndiana-discuss] To the OmniOS, OI and SmartOS community

2017-05-19 Thread bscuk2

Hello,

My comment was simply to frame the direction of travel in todays
changing environment. When the question is considered everyone must have a

Common shared vision

Road map to acheive that

Focus upon where that road map is

I am very happy if this common relationship can be agreed . My point is
that a frame of reference is very important to understand the people of
their relationships so a common direction can be forged.

hello Peter

Thank you for your comment.
You have a better insight view into communities and distributions than I.
My view is mostly a storage related user view and from that pure Illumos
features are ok. A GUI or LX zones are really nice but not essential
and no one

would hinder to add LX to OI or Mate to OmniOS.

I mainly want to trust a distribution to survive and to care about bugs.
Currently we have a OmniOS LTS and the next one is due 2019.
Until then we need a OmniOS to maintain the current LTS.

But the question on what the next OmniOS is based onto must be
answered now, not in two years or when work is mostly done .
The future of OmniOS as a stable free Illumos is insecure enough.

best regards

Gea

The discussion now is if such an effort should be based on the current

community.

I want the discussion going into a common future as I fear that a new
separate OmniOS community effort will only weaken Illumos/OI and cannot
survive in the long term. My hope is that a stronger OI/OmniOS is the
outcome instead where OmniOS is a stable add-on feature for OI
snapshots.

I don't think that's viable, at least in the short term. OmniOS has a
completely different ethos to OI, and there's a reason people chose
one distro or the other.

Attempting to force both requirements out of a single distro will likely
mean that you end up satisfying neither set of users, while making it
much harder for maintainers who have to support both sets of users.

Longer term is a slightly different picture. It's unlikely that OmniOS
will continue to diverge from illumos, and I would like to see the
features backported into illumos proper. Once that's done it makes
more sense to think about sharing, because at least you then have
a common illumos codebase.

News about OmniOS and Discuss about free Illumos distributions and

I have started a thread in a popular forum with a strong ZFS focus to
discuss this
also with regular users outside the maillists.

Hi.
So far, as I understand, OmniOS developers choose to support existing
infrastructure and build systems and there's no development on
merging OI
and OmniOS code base. Without OmniOS developers interested in this,
this

talk is useless.
