Unless you mean doing an annotation highlight and not text selection

I meant these icons, the ones of the 'Black Freehand Line' and the rest, which
look like an actual pen on paper. As compared to the annotation toolbar right
below, which has monochrome and simple icons.

That's a requirement of the PDF specification, Annotations are attached to a
page, so you can't create multipage annotations.

I guess it's a matter of taste, and since i don't have a lot of it I don't see

Perhaps the user-facing thing could create different annotations for different
pages, so that it looks like it did go across pages?

That's just asking for trouble. Imagine we do that, then you add a comment in
that fake multipage annotation (the thing that opens when you double click).

We could force the same comment to both of the annotations, but then you send
that file to someone else, they open it in Adobe Reader, they edit the comment
of one of the annotations, send it back to you saying they have done that, and
you see no change (because you're clicking on the other annotation, in your
mind both annotations are the same annotation when they really are not).

So no, just create multiple annotations.

The crash backtrace is a bit weird.

Some questions:
 * Can you confirm this crash does not happen when saving somewhere else?
 * Does this happen with any file or one in specific?
 * Do you get an error dialog?
 * Does running from the terminal give any warning or error message written to
it?
 * Can you run "valgrind okular myfile.pdf" and make what you do to make it
crash and attach the output?

It's slightly different - there's no way to deselect any text when you're on
another annotation tool. Clicking outside the selection area, the default
Plasma shortcut for Deselect, none of them work.
Escape doesn't work because it's not currently even there, but I wasn't sure of
that at the time.

That's probably because I'm running Arch and therefore don't have any debug
symbols, sorry about that.
> Some questions:
> * Can you confirm this crash does not happen when saving somewhere else?
Yes, I've only observed this for files saved on that CIFS mount. It does not
happen on my local EXT4 file system, as far as I can tell.
> * Does this happen with any file or one in specific?
Happens with any file.
> * Do you get an error dialog?
After looking carefully, I think a dialog appears but the application crashes
immediately after so I don't have time to read it.
> * Does running from the terminal give any warning or error message written
> to it?
Yes, it does:
```
Interesting. With Valgrind, Okular doesn't crash, but the same thing happens:
the file gets renamed with `.part` appended. A error dialog appears with the
message "Could not open file:///mnt/Data3/test.pdf".
The output from Valgrind is:
Well, it seems that there is no support of activities in okular at all, so it
works with the default wm behavior. Now that I seriously switched to using
the same document, only because I am to lazy to search through all the tabs
whether I have the document already open. But sometimes I want to open a second
tab of one long document for the use case described.
Can we add a menu action “Duplicate tab”? Many web browsers have this action
too.
[okular] [Bug 445900] The icons for the annotation tools look off when compared to the general look of Okular icons
2021-11-22 Thread David Hurka
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=445900
--- Comment #4 from David Hurka  ---
> This creates another visual discrepancy, because now the
> icons *for the same function* are different in different toolbars.
This is often misunderstood.
The colorful icons select a whole tool (including configuration like color and
width), and try to visualize the configuration.
The monochrome icons select only the type of the tool, the configuration is
done by the right part of the annotation toolbar.
(Since the configuration is still unique to each tool, it looks like both icons
do the same.)
> look ancient and [...] don't look good on low-res displays either.
I agree with this. They are ancient (for computers), and they used to be
displayed at a much bigger size. They didn’t have text at that time, so they
needed to visualize a lot at once.
> An icon more like the icons in the Annotation Toolbar, and
I think your ideas are welcome. :)
Sure, doesn't seem like it should be a lot of code or make maintainability
harder
[okular] [Bug 445903] Having a text selection and then switching to a highlight tool no longer allows you to deselect the text selection, not even Escape works.
2021-11-22 Thread Albert Astals Cid
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=445903
--- Comment #3 from Albert Astals Cid  ---
Yes, there is no way to deselect text when adding an annotation, i don't see
why that is a problem. Text selection is changed in the text selection mode.
This is not good, just to make sure, the user you're running can rename files
in /mnt/Data3/, right?
Also, probably 99.995% not related, but can you reproduce the problem under X11
too?
Git commit 4cde8b5361ffe92d9eb33d9c07e497ee144d8e4c by Albert Astals Cid.
Committed on 22/11/2021 at 22:59.
Pushed by aacid into branch 'fix_AFNumber_Format'.
Fix implementation of AFNumber_Format
We did not take sepStyle 3 into account.
Also sepStyle 1 and 0 where mixed up and it didn't work either because
replace() needs to be assigned back to the string
