When I unzipped the archive I merged the boot and system. I also
noticed a folder called stubs. I'm not clear whether its contents are
used by the boot and/or system during merging or if its contents must
now remain in situ. My reasoning being that if the merging leaves an
instruction as to where stubs can be found, if I now delete the
unzipped archive containing stubs I'll just create another problem.

I'm always happy to ignore stuff I don't understand but unhappy when a
problem arises after I threw it away because I didn't understand its
importance.

I'm about to assume that, in this case, 'ignore' means the same as
'delete'?

Thanks John.

It could have been a cookie problem. I deleted the relevant cookies
and started again. This morning I was logged in OK. I'll see how it
goes.

I don't want a "user experience" - I just want stuff that works.

Unless you write software in C that makes calls to iconv to process
unicoded character strings then you have absolutely no use for the
stubs files, which can therefore be safely ignored and deleted.

To install Iconv, you just need to follow the simple installation
instructions given on http://www.netsurf-browser.org/projects/iconv/

There are just two steps. To quote from the web page:

  Installation

You must follow these two steps carefully or installation will fail:

1. Merge !System directory

Use the System merge utility provided by Configure to merge the
supplied !System directory with the one on your system.

2. Merge !Boot directory

Use the Boot merge facility in Configure to merge the supplied
!Boot directory with the one on your system.

If there is no Boot merge facility provided on your system,
simply drag the supplied !Boot directory over your existing boot
  structure.

That is all. Do that, and Iconv is correctly installed.

Hope that helps.
