[NANOG-announce] NANOG 51 Call For Presentations now open

2010-10-18 Thread David Meyer
Folks,

Please take a look at the NANOG 51 Call For Presentations (
http://nanog.org/meetings/nanog51/callforpresent.php):

he North American Network Operators' Group (NANOG) will hold its 51st
meeting in Miami on January 30 to February 2, 2011.
NANOG51will
be hosted by Terremark . The NANOG Program
Committee is now seeking proposals for presentations, panels, tutorials,
tracks sessions, and keynote materials for the NANOG51 program. We invite
presentations highlighting issues relating to technology already deployed or
soon-to-be deployed in the Internet. Vendors are encouraged to work with
operators to present real-world deployment experiences with the vendor's
products and interoperability. NANOG51 submissions are welcome at
http://pc.nanog.org. Acceptance notifications for NANOG51 will be sent by
the Program Committee starting December 9, 2010, and will continue through
January 13, 2011.

Time to start thinking about the talk(s) you want to give in Miami!

Thanks,

Dave

[NANOG-announce] PC Nominations Reminder to NANOG Announce

2011-09-26 Thread David Meyer
Hey Folks,

Just a reminder that nominations for the Program Committee are open. The PC
is a group of sixteen individuals from the NANOG community who together are
responsible for the NANOG program. The folks we choose will shape the
future of NANOG.

With that in mind, I encourage you to self-nominate or nominate a member of
the community who you feel has energy and ideas about how the NANOG meetings
can improve and evolve. And for those who haven't served on the PC, it is a
great to work with our community and it is a very rewarding experience.
NANOG has a great tradition; please consider contributing to it as part of
the Program Committee.

So if you want to self-nominate or if you want to nominate someone else,
send your nomination to nominati...@nanog.org. If you are nominating
another person, please provide that person's name and email address. If you
are nominating yourself, please provide a Statement of Intent and a
Biography, each with a suggested limit of 150 words. For samples, please
see the 2010 candidate lists, <
http://www.nanog.org/governance/elections/2010elections/>.

As always, if you have a questions, please email nominati...@nanog.org.

some musings on PI v. PA

2007-07-12 Thread David Meyer

I've been thinking about a benefit of PI addressing that
I have not seen discussed on this list or others (at
least recently). In particular, PI addressing enables a
certain kind of "path selection" that might not be easy
(or possibly desirable) to retain in any of the the
LOC/ID split schemes we have been discussing. This is in
contrast to all of the standard reasons for wanting PI
space (e.g., I don't want to renumber, ...).

Consider the following simple scenario: I'm a multihomed
stub (I don't transit packets between my two upstreams).
Further, I have PA delegations from each of my
upstreams. Now, I'm corresponding with a remote site
using addressing out of one of the PA blocks, call it
X. Now, my link to the ISP aggregating X breaks. A packet
destined for X will then travel very close to my site
before learning that the link is down, possibly too far
to be rerouted. And BTW, if I advertise X to my other
upstream, then my advertisement of X has the same cost to
the routing system as a PI advertisement (X is
effectively PI).

This problem is common to all (I think) of the schemes
that seek to improve/optimize aggregatability in the
core. For example:

(a).In the 8+8/GSE case, the problem is that the
packet will follow the RG in the src address all
the way to the "end" of the path, that is, to the
ISP that can forward it to the site. You don't
learn that the site can't receive the packet
until that point, and there is no way to reroute
it.

(b).The situation is similar with PA space, since the
fact that the link at the "end" of the path might
be down is hidden in the aggregate. You don't
learn this until you are close to the "end" of
the path, and there may be no way to reroute the
packet.

(c).The situation is similar for the map/encap
schemes (e.g., LISP), since one of primary goals
of map/encap is to enable better topological
aggregation.

OTOH, if I announce PI space, "switching to the new path"
is controlled by the announcement/withdrawal of the PI
prefix, and can happen much closer to the source. So in
this sense aggregation breaks a certain kind of "path
selection". I think we all realize that there is no free
lunch, and that this is a property (such as it is) of the
fact that aggregation throws away information in the
interest of computability (a standard technique).

So folks are using PI for reasons other than the
well-known standard laundry list. In particular,
advertising PI space can cause the "switch" to an
alternate path during an outage to happen much closer to
the source and some providers find this to be a desirable
property.

I am interested in hearing about anyone who is relying on
this property of PI, or any other comments on what I've
said above.

Oh, and BTW, none of this to say that we shouldn't be
moving forward with the various alternatives we've been
discussing (e.g., 8+8/GSE, LISP, ...); quite the
contrary. Rather, my question is really about revisiting
assumptions, requirements, and tradeoffs.

Thnx,

Dave

out. We have a great line-up of topics and presenters.
We hope to see many more in Dearborn.

For those who are considering a NANOG Sponsorship, we
encourage you to contact market...@merit.edu. The
community really appreciates the support and vendors do
have a wonderful opportunity to showcase their products.

Thanks, and see you all in Dearborn.

No, the 'show ip bgp' RIBs aren't gone. We're just not
screen scraping them from route-views.routeview.org any
longer, Rather, John Heasly wrote some code that
generates 'sh ip bgp' format from the MRT RIB
dumps. These can be found on archive.routeviews.org.

Let us know if you can't find what you need.

Thanks,

Dave
