Welcome To The Straight Dope Mailing List
Hi and welcome to The Straight Dope Mailing List, a weekly bulletin from Straight Dope World HQ. We've got several departments, including Cecil's current weekly column, Straight Dope classics, staff reports by the Straight Dope Science Advisory Board, the latest from Weird Earl's, and whatever else we feel like throwing in. The mailing will offer a sampling of what's new at the Straight Dope this week and provide links so you can get the full text for any item that interests you. Should you ever decide you'd like to leave the list, unsubscribe instructions will be included in every mailing we send to you. In addition, there will be a link at our website at http://www.straightdope.com where you can change your email address, put your account on hold, or unsubscribe. We put together a mailing every Friday (usually) and our friends at jokeaday.com send it out for free. Help us maintain this attractive financial arrangement by visiting www.jokeaday.com and saying what a nice site they have, how handsome Ray (the proprietor) looks today, etc. We know we can count on you. Thanks for joining us!
New module Crypt::Shark
The next version of the Module List will list the following module: modid: Crypt::Shark DSLIP: RdcOg description: A 64-bit block cipher that accepts a 128-bit userid: JCDUQUE (Julius C. Duque) chapterid: 14 (Security_and_Encryption) enteredby: GBARR (Graham Barr) enteredon: Fri Jul 4 10:21:33 2003 GMT The resulting entry will be: Crypt:: ::Shark RdcOg A 64-bit block cipher that accepts a 128-bit JCDUQUE Please allow a few days until the entry will appear in the published module list. Parts of the data listed above can be edited interactively on the PAUSE. See https://pause.perl.org/pause/authenquery?ACTION=edit_mod Thanks for registering, -- The PAUSE
Module submission Tk::Separator
The following module was proposed for inclusion in the Module List: modid: Tk::Separator DSLIP: bdpOg description: Create horizontal and vertical 3d separators userid: WGDAVIS (William G. Davis) chapterid:8 (User_Interfaces) communities: similar: rationale: This widget can be used to create those 2 pixel-wide 3D lines you often see used to separate buttons, labels, and other widgets. I originally went looking for a widget with this functionality several months ago, however I was unable to find one. Some people on c.l.p.tk suggesting mimicking the behavior of separators using two frames each only on pixel in thickness. While this (sort of) worked, it was somewhat messy and the two light/dark colors used to create the 3D effect were unportable. After some experimentation I found the system defaults that produced the desired effects and created the Tk::Separator widget which can be used to easily create both horizontal as well as vertical 3D separators. enteredby: WGDAVIS (William G. Davis) enteredon: Fri Jul 4 11:45:05 2003 GMT The resulting entry would be: Tk:: ::Separator bdpOg Create horizontal and vertical 3d separators WGDAVIS Thanks for registering, -- The PAUSE PS: The following links are only valid for module list maintainers: Registration form with editing capabilities: https://pause.perl.org/pause/authenquery?ACTION=add_mod&USERID=fb20_add5161066c87f11&SUBMIT_pause99_add_mod_preview=1 Immediate (one click) registration: https://pause.perl.org/pause/authenquery?ACTION=add_mod&USERID=fb20_add5161066c87f11&SUBMIT_pause99_add_mod_insertit=1

Module submission CGI::ProgressBar
The following module was proposed for inclusion in the Module List: modid: CGI::ProgressBar DSLIP: bdphp description: Perl-controlled progress bar via CGI 'wdget' userid: LGODDARD (Lee Goddard) chapterid: 15 (World_Wide_Web_HTML_HTTP_CGI) communities: AS perl-win32-user similar: rationale: Kind of like Tk::ProgressBar for users of CGI.pm. Sub-classes CGI.pm, adding new 'tag' methods to allow: use CGI::ProgressBar qw/:standard/; $|=1; print headers,html_start, progress_bar(-blocks=>25); for (1..25){ # do stuff print update_progress_bar; } print hide_progress_bar, p('done'), html_end; exit; Came out of a number of people asking if it existed in public domian (eg yesterday on above list). I didn't but I've had this code hanging around for a year or so. Tidied up and given away, so not just Tk people can have useful interfaces. enteredby: LGODDARD (Lee Goddard) enteredon: Fri Jul 4 17:37:27 2003 GMT The resulting entry would be: CGI:: ::ProgressBar bdphp Perl-controlled progress bar via CGI 'wdget' LGODDARD Thanks for registering, -- The PAUSE PS: The following links are only valid for module list maintainers: Registration form with editing capabilities: https://pause.perl.org/pause/authenquery?ACTION=add_mod&USERID=0c20_535b151136dcf87f&SUBMIT_pause99_add_mod_preview=1 Immediate (one click) registration: https://pause.perl.org/pause/authenquery?ACTION=add_mod&USERID=0c20_535b151136dcf87f&SUBMIT_pause99_add_mod_insertit=1

PAUSE ID request (KJETILK; Kjetil Kjernsmo)
Request to register new user fullname: Kjetil Kjernsmo userid: KJETILK mail: CENSORED homepage: http://www.kjetil.kjernsmo.net/ why: I've written a module to parse files issued by the Norwegian Banking Payment Processing Central (my translation, I have no idea what they call themselves in English). I've used it in production to parse files containing payment information amounting to about NOK 200 000 (~$25 000), so it works... :-) It's fairly simple, and follows a pretty clear specification to the letter. I've planned calling it No::Finans::BBS::OCRData. Great Perl Hacker Gisle Aas started No::*, and I asked him about use of the namespace, but I haven't received a reply. I'm a bit in doubt how to do this, or whether it is a good idea to use that many sublevels, but it is a rather natural think to do, given that BBS is this Banking Central, and they have quite a bunch of specs. Aas' module No::KontoNr would for example fit perfectly as No::Finans::BBS::KontoNr. Advice appreciated. Obviously, this is just the start! It's my first module, but I'm hacking away happily to the best of my ability so it is not the last! :-) Cheers, Kjetil The following links are only valid for PAUSE maintainers: Registration form with editing capabilities: https://pause.perl.org/pause/authenquery?ACTION=add_user&USERID=1c20_2f2b3c09ef3379a9&SUBMIT_pause99_add_user_sub=1 Immediate (one click) registration: https://pause.perl.org/pause/authenquery?ACTION=add_user&USERID=1c20_2f2b3c09ef3379a9&SUBMIT_pause99_add_user_Definitely=1
PAUSE ID request (STEF; Stéphane Payrard)
Request to register new user fullname: Stéphane Payrard userid: STEF mail: CENSORED homepage: why: I will start by Acme::Bibi. The goal is to support an alternative to the hexadecimal notation. It is called bibinaire and used for numbers expressed in base 16. It uses syllables instead of the bland '0'..'9','A'..'D' For more info see: http://worldserver2.oleane.com/fatrazie/Bibi.html I intent do support more serious modules later. :) The following links are only valid for PAUSE maintainers: Registration form with editing capabilities: https://pause.perl.org/pause/authenquery?ACTION=add_user&USERID=2c20_b9680cb1585c279f&SUBMIT_pause99_add_user_sub=1 Immediate (one click) registration: https://pause.perl.org/pause/authenquery?ACTION=add_user&USERID=2c20_b9680cb1585c279f&SUBMIT_pause99_add_user_Definitely=1
