Deprecated::

2003-01-01 Thread David Muir Sharnoff

I propose that the Deprecated:: prefex be added to modules
whose use is discouraged by the module's author.

This would be an alternative to removing the module from CPAN.

that would not work. people may need the module to work with
older code. the namespace is not a good place for meta-information.

I would suggest that the package name be changed at the same
time. This would prevent the accidental replacement. Or maybe
it wouldn't if the module got packaged by a 3rd party.

Or one could upload a new release of the package with a "development"
version number, so that the CPAN shell won't download it without extreme
persistence.

That is still not a good idea. As brian says, metainformation
like that should not encoded in the module name. Also, it wouldn't
necessarily encode *enough* information, such as whether the author
has some recommendations to use instead of the deprecated one.

Why can't the Makefile.PL of a deprecated module simply be changed to
make the right discouragements, along with the documentation (=head1
DEPRECATED, maybe?)?

RFC Net::Samba, Net::SMB or Samba Perl XS to libsmbclient.

2003-01-01 Thread Stanley Hopcroft
Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,

I am writing to request your comments on a module that fits into the
category of sending Network packets in the SMB protocol (Microsoft file
sharing protocol, the protocol used by Samba and Win NT/2000/XP/9x file
servers).

The module is an XS interface to a small subset of the huge number of
functions in the libsmbclient (Samba 2.2.x) library.

They meet my needs of

. sending and receiving SMB packets for Network management applications

. providing a very modest but hopefully expandable alternative to
smbclient (an application that is very hard to script and for which
SMB::Filesystem is a noble attempt to wrap).

Name spaces like

Net::SMB (although it does NetBIOS also)
Net::Samba
Samba

are tentative choices.

Thank you,

Yours sincerely.

Re: RFC Net::Samba, Net::SMB or Samba Perl XS to libsmbclient.

2003-01-01 Thread Stanley Hopcroft
Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,

Alain Barbett proposed all this stuff nearly two years ago in his
analysis for what became Filesys::Samba.

At that time there was no contemporary SMB client library so he provided
a very neat object interface to smbclient. Bravo !

However, now there is and I am enjoying using it for myself and learning
about XS.

However there is almost no prospect of me making something that is going
to be very useable by others - talent lacking.

That said, I am happy to make a start.

I await your suggestions.
