Installation Troubles

2007-10-29 Thread Chris Harper
m fairly new to OpenBSD (been using FreeBSD for years) and have
stumbled across some issues on a desktop install (after several server
based installs over the past few months).

The system has two identical drives (WD 250G) which I wish to RAID
(1). As i understand it openbsd has no support for my onboard raid
system (NF4 board , eVga 680i) so am to use kernel options.

I enable the raid1 in the bios options and install windows on an 80gb
partition (of the 250GB drive it sees.) and can boot successfully. I
then install OpenBSD on the rest of the drive (wd0) making sure to
slice it up carefully (identical to the howto but with increased /usr
space). I then install the required components and complete the
install by ensuring the installboot runs (with correct references too
wd0) and issue the dd command (whilst reference /dev/rwd0a for copying
to openbsd.pbr).

This all seems fine and I then configure windows to boot it which
also works well. Its when I select this new Openbsd boot option I get
the error:

 Loading...
 ERR M

As I understand it I have some how messed up the secondary loader and
it needs to be reinstalled , so i did a new install . I reinstalled
the system 5 times over a day trying to work out my problem.

wd0 is partitioned with the 80GB for windows and the rest devoted to
OpenBSD and wd1 is currently only partitioned for windows with the
rest 'free'.

Im at a dead end of where to turn next as I am sure this is an issue
with my onboard raid, drive setup and boot parameters as I can add
files to the drives when Im booted into the shell provided on the CD.

 Any help would be appreciated.

This is purely a trial run install before the release of 4.2 as I knew
I would come across some issues trying to create my setup. I would
ideally like to keep the raid 1 setup but appreciate I may have to
have each drive reserved for each individual OS.

nfe0 issues

2007-11-06 Thread Chris Harper
I recently installed 4.2 release on my evga 680i based motherboard ,
which uses nfe(4) for the onboard gig NIC's.

There seems to be an issue in the handling of the autodetection of
media types and the speed it can run at when manual
selection is set. So say for instance I set it manually to 100baseTX
it will no longer function and does not send packets.
If I then set it to 10baseT it will work fine, I have checked the
network routers/cables and interfaces from a windows partition
which detects a 100mbps link.

I have notived that on the router it detects a 100mbps link before the
kernel initiatesthe device during boot i.e before any mention of nfe
on the screen.

Has anyone else had any similar issues using nfe interfaces ?

Sorry about not including a dmesg output previously.

I will try a snapshot and report back on any progress.

2007-11-08 Thread Chris Harper
I have submitted my dmesg to to the email address.

I have recently updated to -current which appears to have solved the
issue, im guessing the PR you pointed to was the culprit.

Ill test it more thoroughly and report back if anything else is wrong.

Re: 7800GS + 2 monitors under 4.2-release

2007-11-08 Thread Chris Harper
Hi Paul

Just wondering if you have had any success ?

I updated to -current and also xenocara but it hasn't worked. I have
managed to get some form of dual screen through nv(4)'s Option
"DualHead" "Yes".

I could not set a resolution suitable for my dual 19"W (1440x900)
monitors thou, it also treats the pair of monitors as one giant
monitor which makes opening windows 'fully'
span the pair.

Hi Michael

Here is a copy of an xorg.conf that will get both screens to act as
one screen, I had no luck getting it to display a useful resolution.

I'm still hoping to get Xinerama to work.

I was just wondering if anyone has made any progress?

I'm still using one monitor and it feels like I lost a finger.

(according to CVS mailing list) to a more recent code including nv and
server.

I will let you know if I have any success with the new update.
