Re: [MlMt] How to set columns and sort for all list views?

2022-02-22 Thread Quinn Comendant
I've still been breaking my brain with the inconsistency of columns and
sort in MailMate. Today I discovered the state is saved in the MailMate
preferences, under `MmMailboxRelatedStates`, where *each view has its
own column settings*. This shows clearly that this is a feature not a
bug. It's an undesirable behavior for me, so I googled this and found
some old threads
[[1]](https://mailmate.freron.narkive.com/0wbncv72/mlmt-revert-to-default-columns-revert-to-different-columns-depending-on-mailbox)[[2]](https://lists.freron.com/mailmate/2017-June/008297.html)
on the mailing list that suggest I can quit MailMate, delete this
preference key by running the following `defaults` command in the
terminal, then re-configure my default view:

defaults delete com.freron.MailMate MmMailboxRelatedStates

After relaunching MailMate, I selected the top-most view of my IMAP
account, set the columns how I want, then selected “Use as Default
Columns”. This worked! It didn't apply to Drafts, Sent, or Spam
folders, but all other folders now have the default columns applied.

However, I still don't see a way to reset the sort preferences in the
same way. For example, every time I switch from Widescreen Layout to
Correspondence Layout, the list of correspondence is sorted with newest
messages at the bottom. Is there a way to set newest messages at the top
for all views, everywhere, always?

Don’t know if you’re interested, but I’m using the developer

The “Check for Update” changes to “Test Build”. Benny is much

[MlMt] Build 5871: Setting date sorting parameters(^) and columns in, folders/sub-folders in the Left Bar

2022-02-22 Thread Henry Seiden

Hello All,

I made two interesting discoveries that seems undocumented in the Help
Menus in this Build. It seems interesting that it isn’t mentioned, but
it seems to hold true in all tabs affecting settings of sub-tabs within
tabs of settings like columns adding or deleting them and setting the
ordering parameter (E.G., sorting early to later or vice-versa). Also
found a specific exception which you may also find interesting.

Case 1: You have or have created a folder like “Archive” (in my case
I renamed it to All Archive 2022 for reasons unimportant but obvious).
In that folder there are default columns or added columns. Within that
group there are several Account folders with messages:
1. You add a new column to this top level folder. The change is
reflected to all of the sub folders automagically. I can find no rules
or setting methods to affect this change in the default settings, it
just happens. The only exception I can find, is that the position of the
column at the end of the list of columns by default may be respecified
in the sub-columns or changed in any sub-folder to whatever you want
independently from the main column or other sub-folders after the main
folder changes. Kind of like a hierarchical ordering setting.
2. Likewise a setting to the top level folder in terms of date ordering
- oldest to newest or vice-versa will affect all the sub-folders, except
where the subfolder was previously set differently.

Case 2: Changes made to top level folders in other terms, in the
View>Layout Menu MAY similarly affect sub-folders, but not the reverse.
If Benny used the same logic, it may explain so of the random looking
effects reported here.

I tried out Case 1. above for my own folders and found it works between
all my top level and (each of) their sub-folders as described. Maybe
whomever is documenting the help menu can confirm and document these
changes along with the respective folder actions. Perhaps it would
explain anomalies reported here on sorting and columns. I leave Case 2
to others to confirm.

Thanks, I [found

confirm setting the column and sort for a top-level folder is inherited
by all subfolders.

The only place this doesn't work is when viewing Layout →

as Default Columns” but it doesn't seem to do anything; those
defaults do not seem to propagate to the other list views.

How can I set my preferred list view settings for all list views
everywhere, forever? 🥺

Thanks,

Quinn

Re: [MlMt] Build 5871: Setting date sorting parameters(^) and columns in, folders/sub-folders in the Left Bar

2022-02-22 Thread Quinn Comendant

Hi Henry,

I can confirm setting the column and sort for a top-level folder is
inherited by all subfolders. I'm not sure it if helped that ran
`defaults delete -app MailMate MmMailboxRelatedStates` first.

The only place this doesn't work is when viewing Layout →
Correspondence, where Date Received is always sorted oldest first, no
matter how that column is sorted anywhere else. This feels like a bug,
if the above is meant to be the new standard behavior.

Hello All,

I made two interesting discoveries that seems undocumented in the Help
Menus in this Build. It seems interesting that it isn’t mentioned,
but it seems to hold true in all tabs affecting settings of sub-tabs
within tabs of settings like columns adding or deleting them and
setting the ordering parameter (E.G., sorting early to later or
vice-versa). Also found a specific exception which you may also find
interesting.

Case 1: You have or have created a folder like “Archive” (in my
case I renamed it to All Archive 2022 for reasons unimportant but
obvious). In that folder there are default columns or added columns.
Within that group there are several Account folders with messages:
1. You add a new column to this top level folder. The change is
reflected to all of the sub folders automagically. I can find no rules
or setting methods to affect this change in the default settings, it
just happens. The only exception I can find, is that the position of
the column at the end of the list of columns by default may be
respecified in the sub-columns or changed in any sub-folder to
whatever you want independently from the main column or other
sub-folders after the main folder changes. Kind of like a hierarchical
ordering setting.
2. Likewise a setting to the top level folder in terms of date
ordering - oldest to newest or vice-versa will affect all the
sub-folders, except where the subfolder was previously set
differently.

Case 2: Changes made to top level folders in other terms, in the
View>Layout Menu MAY similarly affect sub-folders, but not the
reverse. If Benny used the same logic, it may explain so of the random
looking effects reported here.

I tried out Case 1. above for my own folders and found it works
between all my top level and (each of) their sub-folders as described.
Maybe whomever is documenting the help menu can confirm and document
these changes along with the respective folder actions. Perhaps it
would explain anomalies reported here on sorting and columns. I leave
Case 2 to others to confirm.

Re: [MlMt] Keeping emails read/unread

2022-02-22 Thread Henry Seiden

Hello Francesco,

I can see in my IMAP setting there is a button called “Edit
Subscriptions” below the IMAP section in the Edit screen. Have you
looked into that to show or hide sub-folders within your default IMAP
folders or others you may have added?

So, no you don’t have to recreate the account to fix those issues. But
yes, they perhaps need to be adjusted when you add an account to
MailMate, possibly when you’ve added folders in some outside Client
other than MailMate to that same account.

I would start there to review the settings. Benny limits the size of
responses to our posts or I would send you a screenshot of the Edit IMAP
Account screen. But you probably can find your way, I suppose. If you
need details, let me know and I will throw a screen shot up on Dropbox
for you.

Quinn,

I agree, but it’s above my pay grade to decide that part. Frankly, I
haven’t figured out correspondence and its worthiness yet. This is the
first step toward understanding the hierarchy. Seems a big one and I
have no idea what it was before in previous iterations. This part does
makes sense only if its consistent. And its barely so at this stage,
IMO.

i can take offline, take offline, and then remove. 15 minutes later,
they are all back, marked 'failed'.

any clues on how to remove?

You need to unsubscribe from them. Otherwise, MM will refetch the
subscription list, see the (non-existent) mailbox there, and try to
fetch it.

5871 is the test build.

I use the same keystroke to mark messages read as Mail ⌘ + Shift + U.
Seems to work, but don’t know why.

[MlMt] Keystroke combination that seem to work for me in MM Build 5670+

2022-02-22 Thread Henry Seiden

I found these keystroke combos that seem to work on my machine without
any alteration in MM. Maybe we should start a list of them to see if
they are “universal” for all or use the list to build up something
for Benny to put in his help docs?

Anyway, I think these are supported system level (Finder) keystrokes.
Some may need to be enabled in the System Preferences and when enabled
there, seem to work OK in MM:

* ⌘ +SHIFT+”U” = mark as read
* ⌘ + right click mouse= select or deselect (highlight) a
non-contiguous message(s).
* Shift+right click = select a contiguous group of messages starting
from the top, click the first one, then go the bottom of a contiguous
group and then do this to select them all.
* All text based substitutions you may have in MacOS. Like the ⌘ CMD
key, ⌥ OPT keys.
* Fractions, superscripts, Universal charactersets if enabled in your
system settings.

Got any more?
