[ILUG-Cochin.org] PAUSE/RESUME apt-get dist-upgrade

2009-12-07 Thread Jos Collin, ILUG
Hello,

Is it possible to PAUSE and RESUME apt-get dist-upgrade ?

It takes a long time(20-24 hrs) for a dist-upgrade. If I stop it and
start it the next day then it starts from the beginning.

Thanks,
Jos Collin

We were using NIS + NFS in our network. Now for better security and
availability, we are migrating our infrastructure to kerberos + ldap +
openafs.

apt-get dist-upgrade has two parts. First is the package downloading
and second is installation. For me, it resumes if I complete the
downloading. If I abort in between downloading and start again then it
will start the downloading from zero percentage.

Hi Unni
Thanks , In my setup right now there is no DNS server, one of the pre-requisite
for Kerbos is DNS server . Is it a good idea to go with LDAP authentication only
   Thanks

LDAP gives you single password authentication, if all you need is
authentication to desktops/laptops/local machines, then LDAP would be
sufficient. But if you want your web applications (and other apps with
kerberos support) to work without asking for password, Kerberos would
be the way to go. LDAP alone can't handle session information, so
every application will ask for password. With kerberos, you need to
enter the password only once to generate a kerberos ticket, all
kerberos enabled applications can use that ticket without asking for
password again.

/var/cache/apt/archives

The trick is to move the contents to some other place and put it back
again at the right time... not at the start

Best

What do you mean by "right time"?

I think there is no proper way to do the pause/resume. Also there is no
way to resume downloading from the middle of a partially downloaded .deb
file.
