Is it running on google's server. The name "Web Centered OS" seems to
be running in google's server and the users will get an interface. If
it is running on google's server then it doesn't respect your freedom,
even if it is free or not. Because you are not in control of your
computing. Suppose if google publish this software and I'm running it
on my server for you. Then also no matter how much nice guy I am, you
are not in control of your computing.

Yes. Ofcourse. But you are in control of your computing only if you
have your own licensed copy of the OS and run it on your computer.
Atleast your server. Not myserver or ILUG's server or any other
machine. Just curiosity, why any people what to do this? Nowadays,
it's not haard to get your own computer and OS.

I have heard from many people that this is a great advancement in
technology. But they don't know that it is the worst.

Yes. Many people tell that it is very good idea. But no matter if it

google is the No:1 in providing these kind of nasty services. I heard

Please read
http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2009/07/introducing-google-chrome-os.html

It seems like a lightweight linux OS which runs Google's window manager.
This window manager will be (like) a web browser. I guess that there will be
a
GUI to configure network.

Smells like geekbox's idea; Mediaplayer replaced with web browser.

This will be good for people living entirely on Internet - who don't care
about
what is in their local box!

friends, i made the following decision.( thread started
from---ilug-...@googlegroups.com)

   1. a two days GIMP training program will be conducted at kanghagad on
  august 8th and 9th.
  2. the class is handled by at least 3 persons
 1. a good professional graphic designer(will lead the program).
 2. a trainer, having two years training experience(in photo shop)
at a leading multimedia training institute
 3. a person who is familiar with Debian/ubuntu(in gnome)
  3. there will be a text book(only digital copy), which will improve
  the effectiveness of the program.

where is kanhagad:

   - it is a major town in kasaragod district.
   - it is the nearest point to the bakel fort, ananthasramam,
   nithyananthasram.

why kanghagad?

   - there a good amount of people who need the help of free software
   community
   - there are less aware about the community.
   - kasaragod is my home town(even though now i'm not there)

what are the felicities at kanghagad?

   - it on NH-17
   - have railway station, where most of the trains have stop.
   - there are good hotels relatively at cheaper rates
   - there is also a gov. gust house.

if you people are interested i get you more information(regarding train
timings hotel rent etc.)

The idea of a netbook whose OS has to be constantly online is probably
not going to click
Especially in a place where they define broadband with 256kbps and stop
there.
But as mentioned the offline versions of google docs etc would be there

I believe from the announcement, that, it's a linux kernel on which you
will have a Gnome or KDE like interface
Probably something androidish version of an OS I assume.
All things like Office equivalent software might be online or even their
offline versions might be available.
I believe that you'll be using your own software and hardware

But maybe there is somethings that are online.
I think Google might try to formalize Google Drive for file storage on
their servers
But with everything coming out of beta, I think that most of those
elements will be incorporated into the OS

But things which are of concern is:
1) How much of it will be online
2) Virus-free?? That is generally something that's attributed to the
linux kernel because of its OS approaches not due to google doing the
code really good.

Lets wait for the beta to come out and then decide.
It is a bit scary, google pretty much has all our lives in storage.

For a simple reason, its nice to have your own OS with you wherever you're
going. (At least where there is internet)
And I think this is can be attributed as a triumph for FOSS that such an
idea is coming to realization. I don't think Google would have even thought
of something like this if a free and open kernel was not available. And,
yeah, Google is seeming to be taking control, but a lot of people have
benefited from its services... (Unlike some other corporates I know of :P --

Finally, if you don't recognize your freedom, you won't value it. If
you don't value your freedom, you won't defend it. If you don't defend
your freedom, you are going to loose it. Like this.

You don't value your freedom. That's the reason you are thinking about
silly conveniences like chrome.

That's not a problem. google doesn't take control of my computing if I
use their email service. The question is Why we have to use an OS and
other softwares, which are provided by google and give up our freedom?
The same exist in our computer or laptop, which grant us freedom. Why
whould I put all my softwares in somebody else's server and ask him to
control me?

gmail is good. But it has a nasty spy feature too. I would like to
share it with you. It is the chat feature in gmail window. When ever I
log in to gmail, it informs every one online saying "Jos Collin has
logged in now". When ever I'm not working, it informs everybody saying
"Jos Collin is away". Afterwards, if I move my mouse, it informs
everybody saying "jos Collin is back online". Anyway, google provides
the option to turn off the chat window, so that I can say "Hey don't
send out anything". Or we can use a text browser to completely avoid
it.

Putting your software on somebody else's server is a service provided to you by
that somebody else. It is your software that is running, you code it, modify it
or do whatever you want with it. They serve you by keeping your software
up-to-date, free from viruses, accessible from anywhere in the world etc.

Yes. It is a service. Even if I code it and giving it to them, I still
have no access to do anything that I want, on their server. I mean as
I have on my computer or my laptop. So I will use my computer as
server, I will keep the machine in my room. Then I will put my
softwares in that server and access it over the internet. That also,
only if it is necessary.

And how it will be different from G or Y!? How it will be "open"?
We can get its php/ajax source code? Or the source code of its backends?
Or the source code all other software running in their servers?
Or will everyone get user accounts in their servers? w/o a user account,
how can you be sure that they are running what they say they are running?

Or do you just mean mail/im/networking services from fsf.org? Even if it is
from fsf.org, how can it be different from G or Y!?

I dont understand how it is a "nasty spy" feature. It is how a good IM
client
should work. It automatically goes away when I am away. It goes green when
I comes back. And if I dont want others to know that I am online, I can be
invisible or as you said, I can turn it off.

BTW, I am not a fan of inbox chat. I always keep it turned off.
I use pidgin for IM.
