[ILUG-Cochin.org] New Email ID

2009-04-22 Thread Jos Collin
Hi,

I want to create a new email ID like j...@joscollin.com. I have an
extra GNU system and an unlimited internet connection. How can I set
it up as a mail server and create j...@joscollin.com? Or do I have to
approach an ISP for creating it? Please provide your inputs.

Thanks,
Jos Collin

No need ISP's support. But you need the following

1. Register joscollin.com with domain register co.
2. a Static IP from ISP
3. Get DNS server IP's
give these dns ips to your domain registered co and host the same in your
system

Re: [ILUG-Cochin.org] New Email ID

2009-04-22 Thread Sunjith P S
Hi Jos,

You need to get a dedicated IP from your ISP first, if you want to host your
domain and/or mail server on your GNU system.

Once you have dedicated IP, you need to register your domain joscollins.com and
point it in DNS to your dedicated IP. Then install and configure any of the
available free mail servers such as sendmail, exim, postfix, qmail etc. to
receive and deliver the mails addressed to j...@joscollins.com to your inbox.
You may also configure IMAP/POP (eg: cyrus) or webmail (eg: squirrelmail,
horde) on that system and use it to access mail on your host system from other
systems in your local LAN.

Regards,
Sunjith

Re: [ILUG-Cochin.org] New Email ID

2009-04-22 Thread unni krishnan
Hello Jos,

Are you going to host a mail server in your desktop system ? That will be
a bad idea, since you need to keep the system up for all the time to receive
mails. If you can do that then follow the steps to create the mal id.

1. Register the domain name joscollin.com
2. You need nameservers for your domain, there are three options

2.a. Host your own nameserver ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BIND )

In this case you need to register the nameservers, say ns1/
ns2.joscollin.com. But it is suggested to have two separate static IP
address for those nameservers. The nameserver regisration at Godaddy is like
: http://help.godaddy.com/topic/163/article/668

2.b. Use the nameservers of the registrar, if they provide them.
2.c. Use free nameserver like http://www.zoneedit.com/

Then follow the below steps at the nameserver that you choose from above
steps :

3. Then create a sudomain like mail.joscollin.com and add A record to your
mail server IP.

-
mail.joscollin.com.10800INA YOUR-IP
-
4. Change the MX record of the domain joscollin.com to mail.joscollin.com.

--
joscollin.com.10800INMX10 mail.joscollin.com.
--

After doing all those things, you need to setup the mail server at your
system. The Exim mail server is user friendly ( http://www.exim.org/ ), I
think you can use that.

If you are not ready to put your self in these hard steps then I suggest
you :

1. Register the domain joscollin.com
2. Register the account for the domain at http://www.zoneedit.com/
3. Change the nameservers of the domain joscollin.com to the nameservers
provided by http://www.zoneedit.com/ ( You can do that at the domain control
panel ).
4. Register a free Google apps account (
http://www.google.com/apps/intl/en/group/index.html ).
5. Change the MX record to Google servers at the
http://www.zoneedit.com/panel. (
http://www.google.com/support/a/bin/answer.py?answer=55378)

  Hope this will be helpful.

The last three meetings have been based on this.
http://www.ilug-cochin.org/meetings/march-2009-meeting-report/
http://www.ilug-cochin.org/meetings/february-2009-meeting-report/
http://www.ilug-cochin.org/meetings/january_2009_meeting_details/

The media has also been supporting our campaign for bringing teachers
closer to the Free Software Community.
http://www.hindu.com/2008/12/26/stories/2008122650810200.htm
http://www.hindu.com/2009/01/23/stories/2009012357890200.htm

As discussed during the March meeting, we embark on a mission
to create a community based curriculum and text book dealing with
IT and computer science subjects for the students.

An initiative in this regard has been started already by people in the
Free Software Community.
http://gnulinux4cbse.pbwiki.com/ is a great kickoff in terms of what
we have been planning.

As we had discussed in the last meeting, we need to take up our initiative
seriously and thereby contribute our part to the above link. Indeed with the
changes happening in the wiki and the encouraging developments, we believe
we will reach our final goal by collaborating with others in the Free
Software
Community.

Since our last meeting was just the beginning, we hope to continue the
discussion forward in the April Meeting bringing out some concrete ideas
to take forward this initiative and create a strong foundation based on the
above link.

Technical Presentation: Introduction to Bash Scripting by Kurian

The session will cover the basics of shell scripting. The session will aim
to throw light on how some of the common problems we face can be solved
using bash scripting. Basic syntax and constructs of bash and few sample
programs like Backing up Home directory, Converting Files formats (eg:
mp3->ogg) in batch mode etc. will form the main part of the session.

After this as time permits we will address the common difficulties faced
by teachers and provide guidelines for dealing with issues.

We hope more people from the community will
make it to the meeting. This will enable a very exciting
interaction with the teachers and free software community.

We look forward to your participation for this exciting meeting!!!

Hoping to meet you all on Sunday

Thank You

I'm sorry, I forgot that I have already tried onlinesbi.com with newer
versions of Mozilla in Debian/Lenny. I believe that the newer versions
of Mozilla are Iceape and Iceweasel. It does nothing but supporting
