Abbyy Fine Reader Express for Mac

2013-01-11 Thread jshandra72
Hey guys,
Has anybody used Fine Reader Express. I'm thinking of pairing this with an
Epson all in one for scanning and OCR. Will I get the results I'm thinking. The
scanner comes with a base version of Fine Reader, but know it's not accessible
like Express. Any feedback would be appreciated.
Thanks, J. P.

Preview Question!

Hey guys,
I have sort of a strange question. I need to quickly sign some legal
documents. I know that Preview has a signature option in preferences. Will I be
able to use signature capture on my own, or will I need sighted help? I'm not
sure how accessible that feature is. Thanks for your assistance. Unfortunately
I don't have FineReader at the ready right now.

o. t.: Microsoft Office for Mac! Important: read and leave comments!

o. t.: Microsoft Office for Mac!
Important: read and leave comments!

Hey guys!
I contacted Microsoft this week about the accessibility of Office for Mac. I
have been in contact with a very nice woman who is now heading up Microsoft's
Mac accessibility. I explained to her that Office for Mac was completely
inaccessible with voice over. I explained to her how we either need to run a
virtual machine or Bootcamp. I'm writing this post for everyone to leave their
experiences. Most important, leave your thoughts how accessibility can be
improved. Please be nice with comments. She will be reading this. She really is
perceptive to our feedback. She wasn't aware how inaccessible it was with voice
over. She had worked with accessibility on the PC side, so this is our
opportunity to explain what is lacking for Mac. She also agrees that we should
only have to load one piece of software end work out of the box. Not have to
run a virtual machine. Thanks for your help.

OT: iOS 6 Disappointment!

2013-02-15 Thread jshandra72
OT: iOS 6 disappointment!

Is anyone else feeling a little sad about the iOS eco-system since release in
October. Don't get me wrong, there will always be issues. However Apple has had
so many issues.
First, you had the complete redesign of iBooks, App, iTunes store. In the
first release the blind community lost a lot of access, because we didn't even
have the ability to see ratings with the new software.
Second, you had the App store crashing when you would go into the search area.
This happened to everyone, not just our community.
thirdly, who can forget the map debacle.
You have devices going into recovery mode when you do a reset.
The 6. 1 update you now have exchange issue. The extreme 4s battery issue, and
now this morning people who use institutional accounts like at schools.
Individuals can bypass the no downloading option.
I just find this so sad. apple used to pay such close attention to stability,
clean UI, and of course accessibility. I still love my Apple products, and hope
things change under Jony Ive. Is anyone else feeling slightly let down? This is
just a short list, I know you could point out more. I just pointed out a few
which never should have happened!

anti-Virus Software: download, or Not to Download?

2013-02-19 Thread jshandra72

Hey Guys,

I wanted to pose a question. What are your feelings about Anti-Virus Software
for Mac? If you use it, which do you use? Which is accessible?
Until now, I have not used any. apple announced this morning it was hacked by
same people who hacked Facebook. So this had me asking myself this question
this morning. I'm not paranoid! I feel very safe with Mac OS. We do not have
the amount of attacks on Mac, that Windows does. However, it isn't uncommon
anymore to hear when it happens. The more people who use them, the bigger the
reward for the hackers. So I was curious about your thoughts on this topic.
Before anyone jumps down my throat with this post, it's just a question. I feel
Apple does a very good job with security. I also know when security flaws are
pointed out. They are quick to patch the vulnerability.
Thanks for your feedback!

OT: Samsung Suing Apple Over Voice Over!

2013-02-22 Thread jshandra72

Hey Guys,

This is completely off topic. However, this story I'm posting here is
disturbing.
samsung is suing Apple in a German court over Voice Over. They are claiming it
violated one of their patents. What is disturbing, they are trying to get
devices with Voice Over banned. Knowing what this would do to the blind
community. This is so utterly despicable to me. This is just not a calculated
business move. This could actually affect how the blind community has access to
GOOD devices. As we all know, no one touches Apple when it comes to including
the disabled with its computer and iOS devices. Anyways, I thought you might
find this interesting.

Is Tune-Up Accessible?

2013-03-24 Thread jshandra72

Hey Guys,

I have been avoiding this prospect for awhile now.. I really need to clean up
my iTunes library. Mainly to clean up duplicates. Does anyone know how
accessible Tune-Up is in the Mac Store. I have sighted friends who like it and
say it works well. However, obviously don't want to waste the money if it will
not work for me. If this isn't accessible, does anyone know of a similar
program that is? I'm in the U. s., so I need one from the U. s. Store. Thanks
for any help you guys can give!

App Accessibility: Please Read!

2013-04-21 Thread jshandra72

Hey Guys,

I am writing this post in hopes of your support. I'm getting frustrated with
some developers lack of dedication to accessibility for their apps. This isn't
to slam all. Their are quite a few who understand importance. There are a lot
of developers who don't respond to emails when you write them. I think that
Apple should consider a rating for accessibility in the ios and Mac app stores.
Maybe 1 to 5, for completely inaccessible to completely accessible. Maybe if
developers see it in writing, they might be inclined to fix it.

I'm including a link to a post I put on AppleVis. Please consider signing here
or there.

I also find it demeaning to contact Apple for credit on completely
inaccessible apps. I'm not talking partially inaccessible. Their are quite a
few which we find work arounds. We have all encountered the ones where
developer make no effort, which is wrong because Apple does provide tools to
make apps accessible.

Thank you for your time. I will forward to Apple with feedback given.

Google Accessibility

2013-05-18 Thread jshandra72

Hey Listers,

I am asking for your assistance. I have started a petition on Change .Org for
Google Accessibility. I started this petition because Google declared to the
world they were dedicated to Accessibility. However; their actions do not
reflect this statement. Of course browsers and email are accessible. This is a
requirement by law. That's where the dedication ends. I'm including some
examples.

The first example is Google +. If you have ever looked at the app; there are
many links and buttons which aren't clearly labeled. The useability is pretty
much non existent.

For those who have tried an Android device; its not Google that provides the
majority of accessibility. It's 3rd party developers and apps. You could spend
a whole day trying to find an adequate way to get a task done. Of course; this
is because you must find work arounds. I don't know why any blind individual
would choose Android at this point. Its not like Apple software which just
works out of the box.

The last example is the new Hangouts app. It falls into the same category as
Google +. Links and buttons aren't clearly labeled. The useability again is
lacking.

Please take a moment to sign the petition. Tell Google to live up to the
promise of accessibility in their products. More importantly; tell them the
disabled community is not a second -class society.
Thank you for your help!
