Re: Pondering the switch to a Mac (blind but with residual vision)
Hi David, I am trying to switch to the mac so I purchased a macbook pro but, I still have my windows PC if I need it. I have been finding that I use my mac more so far. So if you can either now or in the future, obtain a mac to start using it and than you can use you windows pc, perhaps it won't be so hard later when you lose all your site. I too had excuses for not getting a mac even though I really knew that it was better for me. I think we just don't like change so we make an excuse why we don't. I ended up delaying my purchase and kind of regret it! Heather -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. voice over guide
Hay, does anyone have this problem with the voice over guide. I downloaded in the BRF format to read in kurzweil1000 but it won't open it and kicks me out of the program! I wanted to read it on my windows desktop with k12 and practice with my mac laptop that is on the desk. Re: voice over guide
Yes, I have been a bookshare user for 4 or 5 years! We e-mail them the braille file may be broken. Also the one on apple's side is broken too! It comes in a winzip file and you abstract the files to get them to be .brf and I use k12 to read them. It did not work on my k12 or braillenote. So who ever created the file needs to fix the proglem. It did not say who created the files otherwise I would have sent an e-mail about the problem. Re: CD burning options on the Mac and another Amadeus question
Hello, I use cdx but I think that is only a windows burning program. Cdx allows you to burn in to mp3, ogg and wmb formats by pushing one of the function keys. I have used easy cd creater as well. But I prefer itunes, it does a better job. I just burn my music to mp3 format and than when I am done with all of the cds, I just move them to my external hardrive. I actually put my music folder on the desktop and when it is all done, I put the cds on my external. It does not take me that long. mac verses pc
I have taken to using both computers right now. I have a mac laptop and a windows desktop. Grant it I use my windows desktop more but as I learn voiceover, I hope to move between both systems equally. It is not about which is better for it is a matter of perspective of the individual. I like jaws for what it does, making my windows pc blind friendly. But, I cant access jaws in say a public library, the computer lab at school or my sighted cousin's house but I can access a mac in all those locations using voiceover. Provided there computer is not ten years old! But I like my windows pc for the use of Kurzweil1000, Duxbury which I use with my braille printer and the victor stream to read books. I hope that in the future, kurzweil1000 will have a mac equivalent like kurzweil 3000. Now that I am familiar with the mac, I can walk in a library, school or any other public places in get on a mac to do what I need to do without sighted help. I know someone might put forth system access to go for windows users? Just one problem, if that computer is not connected to the internet, how can you access system access? If you are at a log in screen, how would you know with out speech to tell you? I am not defending one over the other, it is a matter of what one's needs are at the time. I believe one should be familiar with both, not that they need to have both! Heather -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. please don't turn this in to a debate, just need information
I am a very knew Mac user and feel that our state rehab departments are favoring the windows based machines over the mac machines. Yes, our states have all the money to give there blind consumers all this adaptive technology while in school. However, after school, blind individuals struggle to keep their equipment up to date. I am trying to write a letter about the mac for blind consumers instead of jaws on a windows pc. I wanted to make the case that the states should not be so geared to window based machines for there blind consumers. I just don't no enough about OCR solutions for the Mac like we have Kurzweil1000 for windows. Also I am not sure about the braille translation programs for the macs as we have mega dots or Duxbury for the windows computers. Also, we use victor streams, eclipse reders and for our textbooks so if there is a Mac equivalent, I wanted to know about it. I am trying to convince our rehab department that they need to show both options to their consumers. I plan on submitting my letter at the end of the week to are rehab department. good apple commercial
I live in Austin Texas. We have an Apple corporate office here. The university uses macs and some of the school districts too. I remember when I had to use a mac, know one told me about voiceover. They simply said "macs are not accessible so you cant take that class," and now the answer is, "good luck we don't have technology specialist to help you but, if you figure it out, can you help us?" I don't like the rehab agencies because, they sign contracts with one thing and you have to fight to use the other. Like in Texas, jaws is the only screenreader the state will buy unless you have some reason to get window eyes. So instead of giving blind consumers a lot of options, there is just one or two. For example, the federal government signed a contract with apple, not sure when, people will have to know how to use a mac. The federal government is one of the largest hiring bodies of the blind. But because, the windows are pushed on us and the macs are not shown to us, some of us will not take the jobs as we have been told the macs are not accessible for the blind. I think it would be really cool to have an apple commercial featuring a blind mac user using voiceover. It could go like this:Scene Two blind people are shopping for a knew computer at the store. One has to buy all these products while the other decides on a mac. "windows quality pc 900 dollars.; windows office products, 300 dollars; The latest windows, 200 dollars; Windows Monitor with keyboard 150 dollars; windows screenreader 2000 dollars. Blind person buying a mac with I works and taking it home to use it without sighted assistance, priceless!" Microsoft Office 2011 period
Bill is responsible for that robot they call narrator and he claims windows is accessible. While our friends at Apple, actually have a real screenreader built in to their system. So, Bill is not doing anyone any favors by making us, windows users, go out an by screenreaders worth more than their pc computers. I want to put a blind fold over his eyes and make him use his own computer with just narrator, I am sure he would not get very far! Also, anyone who has to use word 2010 with jaws, has to by another msa or their job has too. And the mac users with voiceover, cant use it at all. So he is an easy target. Otherwise, he would have wised up a long time ago and had his own built in speech for windows but, he just does not care. pondering question
I was thinking today as I was using some of my items for the first time on the mac, about a question. In windows, it always asks you if you are sure about doing anything and you have to tell it yes or no. But I find that the mac does not have a message saying are you sure about anything. For example, if you delete something, it does not say deleting x are you sure? It just does it. That is great but what if you did not really want it to or you hit something by mistake, I am sure that might happen somewhere down the road. Is there a message that one can turn on so if they make a mistake, the mac will say doing x or y, are you sure before it does it? Re: VO mute hot keys
If it does not work, here is the steps for unmuting speech with the keyboard. vo-f8, (or on some it is fn-vo-f8) brings the voice over utility. Hit s for speech and tab twice to the mute speech and deselect from there. BY hitting vo with space bar. Texas, there never in the office always in training and they get four day work weeks. They spend loads of money on mass mailouts that never arrive on time, usually after the fact. Okay, there are so many choices so I am not sure what might be best! I want to create an audio story of my family and be able to put it on my computer in MP3 format. So I can send it off to them. voiceover, for the ipods, which is best
I had a question because, I could not tell by looking at apple's site which iPod is going to do the trick! The first is I have both a mac and pc, until the pc dies and I can justify an imac like I justified a laptop when the Dell croaked. So I want to be able to connect either to one or the other to obtain media. I have about 70gb of material so far; still ripping cds, the never ending process. I want to beable to record and listen to media. The apple site did not give me enough options because, I know by going to the store, their or more iPods available than what is listed on the site. I plan on using the iPod when traveling out and about and to record meetings. ON apple's site, it said the iPod shuffle had voice over but it did not say for all the others but, I know they all do accept for the iPod classic; correct me if I am wrong! I wonder when it will come to the mac?
Serotek Corporation, the leading provider of accessible multi platform and cloud-based solutions which can be accessed from anywhere, is proud to announce the release of DocuScan Plus. This innovative software allows persons to scan and read documents from any computer with an attached Twain-compliant scanner, sound card and internet connection. Serotek's DocuScan Plus offers high-quality optical character recognition, (OCR), to convert the printed page in to text. This self-voicing application can read both printed pages from a Twain-compliant scanner, as well as many types of PDF files, including those containing text and those containing only images. The software also supports scanners with duplex and ADF (automatic document feeder) capabilities.DocuScan Plus can convert scanned documents in to MP3 audio files for playback on many portable devices, and the software can even convert scanned materials in to the popular DAISY format. For Low Vision users, DocuScan Plus also offers a full Screen Magnifier for the reading of scanned text. This magnification option, when combined with the self voicing features of DocuScan Plus, allows documents to be comfortably read from the screen as well as via text-to-speech. Materials can also be saved in Large Print. In this way, documents can be scanned, printed, and shared with friends or viewed offline under a Video magnifier. "We wanted to create an affordable application that really took in to account the way we access the printed word in the 21st century.", said Mike Calvo, CEO. "We don't spend all our time on one computer, or even one device anymore, so why should we be using software based on that model? When we make a product like this, with a feature set that's useful to people with a wide variety of disabilities, and it's just as easy to use from the classroom computer as it is from home, we believe it has the potential to open a lot of doors that have remained closed until now." The DocuScan Plus software can be used as an installed program from your personal computer, or it can be accessed from any computer simply by visiting http://www.DocuScanPlus.com. The program may be purchased for only $299, or less than one third of the cost of < /span> other scanning solutions. Other features included are: Braille Conversion: DocuScan Plus contains Braille translation options, allowing you to convert your scanned pages and PDF files into a variety of different braille formats based on the specific translation table you choose. Save To Kindle: Wirelessly Transfer scanned documents to the Amazon Kindle for reading on the go using the Kindle's built in text to speech function. Export Scanned Text: Save documents and materials to a computer or portable DAISY player for offline reading. Encrypted Online Storage: Save documents securely to the cloud and retrieve them from anywhere. Additional Synthesizer Support: Choose from a variety of synthesizers for use with this self-voicing application. Additional Support For Mobile Platforms: DocuScan Plus will support some external camera and mobile phone platforms. This functionality will come free with DocuScan Plus and it is currently scheduled for release in the first quarter of 2011. DocuScan Plus may be used independently of any other Serotek software. Re: Microsoft Office
I don't know if any vo users can help because msoffice for mac does not work on the mac with vo! If you have your one to one, I would have them install it. Unless you are using msoffice on your mac in the windows partition side, you have to have something like NVDA on a thumb-drive to know what's going on! Just know that vo does not work with msoffice!
