videos on the mac
Hi all, I am currently undertaking an online course. Over all it seems accessible, except I can't play the 2 part video it has. There's just no link to the videos at all, which makes me think it could be flash perhaps. Any ideas of a way around this issue, or what I should tell the staff who run the course to make it more accessible? Thanks. questions about videos
Hi all. I have a link that was given to me of some videos. They are in mp4 format. When I try to download them, there is a play button, with another thingy that tells me how many mins or seconds it has to go to have it downloaded I think. but when it got to 0 seconds, and I press play, it starts the process all over again. Re: questions about videos
Is there a way to download it with out playing it, thereby playing it off line? Steph - Original Message - From: Teresa Cochran I think you are coming up with a player for watching the video. I'd suggest you wait a minute or two for enough of it to be downloaded to begin playing. It sounds like it is buffering, because it's being played before you have enough of it. Re: scanning software for the mac
Thanks for the reply. I found the trial version of this software. Will this trial convert scanned immages to text? i'm happy to pay for it, but I need to test it before I buy. I need to scan my bi study materials next week so need to make sure it'll work. I hope it does, because I am thinking of going totalY mac and not using windows again unless I have too. Thanks, Steph - Original Message - From: Scott Howell I personally use ABBYY Fine Reader Express. It will interface with most twain compliant scanners. Others will have something to say on this subject as well. As far as installing software, I will give you the most basic information because there is a lot to cover as far as technical details. So, basically you have software that is rapped in a disk image and most of these have an extension of dmg. This disk image when opened mounts to the desktop and contains the application or perhaps an a self-contained installer package, which incidentally has an extension of pkg. SOmetimes software is simply archived as a zip file and once opened it generally will extract the contents of the zip in the same location (i.e. in the downloads folder if that is where your downloads are located). If the file is an app (not a pkg file or installer) you can simply copy the app into the Applications folder. When you run the app, it will create any preference files etc. If the app is an installer package, you would not copy this to the Applications folder. You can just run it from wherever you are and it will install the software and any other supporting files into the proper locations. You can unmount the disk image by selecting it and pressing command-e to eject the disk. This is a very quick and dirty description without piling to many details on you. There are a lot of great resources out there that cover the topic in greater detail and you might want to do some reading and research. I am sure others will have plenty to share on this topic as well. Hope that helps some and gets you started. Steph - Original Message - From: Geoff Waaler I too am using tthe tryal version of FineReader express and have never gotten it to work, so this suggestion may be worth every penny you paid for it :). Disclaimer aside, I believe you need to select your scanner in the menu associated with "get images from". If your only choice is "file" then either you don't have a Twane scanner, or the software supporting your scanner is not recognized by ABBYY. Once your scanner is selected, pressing a button such as: "convert to text document" should activate your scanner. Re: pass word protection and internet filtering
Hi scot, I have no desire to stop our kids accessing stuff online. It's the porn and pop up adds i am trying to protect them. The reason i need to password protect the mac is for my piano studio. Thanks for the great tips. Steph - Original Message - From: Scott Granados Don't bother with Internet filtering, it's a waste of time and diverts the parenting role away from where it belongs. Speaking as someone who has raised 3 kids successfully and as someone who has had internet longer than most in the home it's just not worth the aggrivation and it builds a lot of distrust. Your kids will just figure out how to circumvent the filters and feel they can't talk to you about what they encounter online because you don't trust them enough to give them access to the computer. Some strategies that do work really well is don't keep the computer in an out of the way location. If the computer is in the middle of the kitchen or family room it's less likely they will visit sites they shouldn't because you or your other adult family members can look over the shoulder. Another thing to do is maybe use some logging software. This way you can see the sites they visit but not have the headache of valid sites being blocked or false positives. More important than all these tips is just talk to the kids. I realize that's the obvious thing to say but it's worth repeating. No filtering software can come close to matching the value of open channels of communication. So save the effort and slap that computer in the family room. Thanks Scott On Feb 10, 2011, at 3:00 AM, Stephanie Mitchell wrote: I have a new imac which I will set up on the weekend. Re: music notation and the mac?
Yes I did. I was a new user back then so will try it again. let me know if you get it working. Also, the windows version never worked. Steph - Original Message - From: Karen Lewellen did you try reading the "mup for blind users" section on their website? granted I am not sure what or when you tried this, but the present edition appears to work in mac, windows and Linux. mercy it uses a text file and comes in code, not sure why it would not work with voiceover, even the midi idea someone else referenced is an option. Going to dig a bit deeper on this one for sure. Karen On Sat, 26 Feb 2011, Stephanie Mitchell wrote: There was a programme called "music publisher software" mup for short that uses text. Re: many of the conmands don't work on imac
This has always happened since I set up the imac. I'd never tried it with the macbook yet. As far as I know, it works in every other way. Steph - Original Message - From: Scott Howell I am fascinated by your issue. So, first have you tried connecting the keyboard to your MacBook Pro? This would at least verify if there is a problem with the keyboard itself. Has the keyboard worked at anytime or has this problem existed since you setup the machine. Do all other keyboard functions perform as expected? Do you know if during the setup you may have inadvertently selected a different keyboard? I doubt this, but this goes back to whether all other keys function as expected. You are not pressing any other keys in conjunction with the command key? Sorry, I know this may be an obvious question and not wanting to offend, but it helps to ask the most obvious questions. I have found that sometimes the most obvious things are overlooked in favor of something more exotic. :) On May 11, 2011, at 6:47 AM, Stephanie Mitchell wrote: I have no idea what keyboard it is. So i'm in the market for a new machine. Steph -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Re: macbook pro or macbook air?
Hi all. This mac will be used for the kids to do school work and the internet. I have an imac for every day use. And an ipod touch. Steph - Original Message - From: Buddy Brannan That's not necessarily so. While you get more hard disk space and a faster processor, the Pro is significantly thicker and heavier than the Air, and boots up more slowly owing to still using a mechanical hard drive. I got to play a bit with an Air last week, and the solid state drive really makes a huge difference in how quickly things open. Safari just popped up instantly, and I really do mean instantly. So if you don't have a lot of storage needs to carry with you, and really need something light and very portable, the Air may well be just what you need. Of course, if you need an everyday machine for production and storing lots of stuff, an Air is definitely not a good fit at all. I'd love to have an Air for a second machine, but I don't think it would be appropriate as a primary machine. Yep, I do love my Macbook Pro, but I showed remarkable restraint in not buying an Air. -- Buddy Brannan, KB5ELV - Erie, PA Phone: (814) 860-3194 or 888-75-BUDDY On May 13, 2011, at 9:44 AM, Sarai Bucciarelli wrote: Hi: The Pro gives you more bang for your buck. If you have no other computer, the MacBook Pro is a much better machine, and you can have a much bigger hard drive in it too. I've just ordered a MacBook Air, but I already have a MacBook and a MacBook Pro available to me, as well as several external hard drives of various types. It's all a matter of preference and needs.
