Re: USB drive not showing up
I think this is a bug in sl. mine does the same thing. I find the easiest way to get to it if it doesn't show up is to open up a new finder window and go to the sidebar and look under devices. you'll see it there and can then access it. oh, weird!! I dunno then! reordering songs in iTunes?
hey guys so I have this awesome playlist of positive songs that I've been working on for the past forever or so, lol. I keep adding to it and it's quite amazing if I do say so myself, lol. but I wanna change the order of the songs. right now they're just in whatever order iTunes decides they should go in. is there a way to change it? I'd think going into the get info dialog and numbering them might work, but is there a faster way than that? maybe like command arrowing like you do to move things around the dock? thanks Jessi and Goldina --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. updating facebook status from the full site?
hey guys back with another question. I use the mobile facebook site all the time but thought I'd check out the full site again since I haven't used it in awhile. it seems okay, a bit cluttered definitely but usable except there doesn't seem to be a way to update your status? there's no edit field. enjoy your mac!! you'll love it!! and I completely agree. if there's a mainstream solution, people should use that. these note takers and screenreaders are okay if there's no other solution, but people already see blind people as bad different as it is and it seems to me like people don't take the time to understand what they don't know about. everyone knows about apple computers and computers in general, and I think the more sighted people see us using regular technology the better. hey Maurice, to fix it so VO doesn't give so many instructions 1. go to VO preferences with VO f8 2. interact with the categories table and navigate to verbosity. 3. stop interacting with the table and VO right arrow over until you see the "hints" tab. select that. 4. uncheck the box that says speak instructions for using the item in the voiceover cursor. 5. close preferences and you should be good. hth Jessi On 2010-01-21, at 8:58 PM, Charlie Doremus wrote: > Can anyone translate the message from Maurice ham call kd0iko into English? dvd player refusing to play dvd's?
hey guys the cd/dvd drive on my macbook has been doing some weird things lately. it'll play most cds and dvd's, but it's iffy on my glee road to sectionals box set. there are four dvd's in the set, the first 13 episodes of the show. sometimes they'll work, but most of the time they just spin and stop and spin and stop and finally the dvd player spits them out. they're not mounted to the finder and the mac doesn't seem to have any recognission that they're inserted except for the spinning and stopping before spitting out. I've tried cleaning the dvd's and it doesn't make a difference. does anyone know why it might be doing this? I hope there's nothing wrong with the drive! but I don't think so, cuz it works with other cd's! and sometimes with the glee ones too, just not all the time! it seems to have a mind of its own about when it wants to work! -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Re: Power issue on macbook
mine's done this a few times too but I'm not really worried. it usually happens when I'm doing something quickly like arrowing through to check the time. it's like voiceover says whoa, you're going way too fast and I'm really confused so I'll just pop, lol. leaving it for a few seconds and then restarting voiceover usually does the trick. peace and positivity Jessi follow me on twitter www.twitter.com/canadian_diva On 30-Apr-09, at 6:45 PM, rayna424 wrote: > > I probably need to take it in to the Apple store but wonder if any of > you have experienced this. Re: Power issue on macbook
you restart voiceover with command f5. command f5 once to turn it off, then again to turn it back on. you might have to fiddle with it a few times, but eventually it will come back. you shouldn't have to restart your macbook. I'm not sure if the whole computer freezes when this happens or if it's just a voiceover thing but turning voiceover off and then back on again should definitely fix it. peace and positivity Jessi follow me on twitter www.twitter.com/canadian_diva On 30-Apr-09, at 7:57 PM, rayna424 wrote: > > Oh yes it happens just the way you describe, when I'm going really > fast. > > How do you restart VO? strange behavior
hey guys, just hmmming over some things this morning lol. when I got up this morning and was looking at my twitter messages, just arrowing through them in twitteriffic, voiceover crashed! I think it was still running, cuz when I took focus away it made the little clicking sound, but when I command f5'd to turn it off and back on again, it wouldn't come back!! I had to restart!!! it's done it twice today!! I just got through repairing disc permissions, so we'll see if that does anything, but does anyone else's do this? the speech just randomly stops out of nowhere but it seems as if voiceover is still running? and then a lot of my apps seem to be running slowly. mostly twitteriffic, itunes and ijournal, but I'm thinking maybe that's just cuz they all need time to connect to the internet before they can be used? so maybe that's nothing. but my machine does seem a bit more sluggish than usual. poor thing. --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. issue with mail and new safari 4 beta
hey guys I'm back on my mac, yay yay and more yay!!! thank goodness, lol when I booted it up after not for a week, the new safari 4 beta was there to greet me in the software update. how lovely!! so I installed it. now, I seem to be having a problem with mail. I'll be reading my messages, but after awhile when I VO J on a message, VO just says scroll area and it won't let me read the message. I can't interact with it or anything. if I VO J again it'll bring me back into the messages table, but it won't let me read any other messages. the only way I can get this to stop is to quit mail and reopen it again, and that's very inconvenient!!! has anyone else had this issue and if so how did you go about fixing it? is it a bug with the new safari 4 beta? cuz it only happened after I installed that!!! thanks. peace and positivity Jessi follow me on twitter www.twitter.com/canadian_diva --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. I totally agree with everything you just said!!! yes!!! lol. my dad calls me a computer snob. I haven't quite figured out if he's kidding or not lol. maybe half and half? he claims that pc's "just work." and I laugh because it's been a long time since I've seen a pc "just work!" they always need updates and fixes and virus updates and ugh...gives me a headache just thinking about those days. I'm not clueless, I know there are viruses for the mac, but they're so few and far between!! it's so nice to not have to worry!! and yes, the mac has a few lil quirks too, mostly where voiceover and safari are concerned, and I really really wish it would play nicer with flash and firefox, but I'm sure those things will come in time. Re: very nice experience at University Village Apple Store in Seattle Washington
hey, Ben, this is good news!!! I love when I hear good stories about apple employees not only knowing what voiceover is, but wanting to help improve it!!! I've never even been to the apple store here in vancouver, canada, I know...sad!! lol. I need to find a way over there. but when I do I'll definitely tell how it was!!! your suggestions were good, too!! I definitely would've said firefox. IPhone is good, maybe the more they hear it the more they'll consider it? although when I talked to the firefox people at CSUN this year they assured me making it accessible with voiceover was a "priority." maybe they were just saying that to make me go away? or maybe it takes time and I'm impatient lol. I think flash is another big one, although it seems like adobe and apple aren't willing to budge on that one and they keep blaming the other, so we'll see if that ever happens. I hope so though, since flash is such a huge part of the internet these days!!! but congrats on a great apple store experience, apple is truly a one of a kind organization!! yay!! peace and positivity Jessi follow me on twitter www.twitter.com/canadian_diva On 27-May-09, at 10:37 PM, Ben King wrote: > > Dear Mac Friends, > > I am writing you to let you know about an experience I had today at > the University Village Apple Store in Seattle Washington. Re: very nice experience at University Village Apple Store in Seattle Washington
agreed, Arthur, lol. if you're gonna take that approach about the iphone and firefox and their various addons and apps why don't you just say that about voiceover as a whole? what it seems like you're saying is let's not make the iphone accessible cuz none of the apps will be. well then, let's not make the mac accessible because of all those apps that aren't made by apple that may not be. that seems like a silly approach. I'm sure there will be plenty of iphone apps that will be accessible. as the word about accessibility grows, app developers will most likely strive to make their products accessible. they've done so on the mac, so I don't see why they wouldn't on the iphone. I'm sure apple will do it, it's only a matter of time. let's not be all negative and try and shoot down something that could benefit us. the iphone will still be the iphone whether it's accessible or not. peace and positivity Jessi follow me on twitter www.twitter.com/canadian_diva On 28-May-09, at 12:23 PM, arthur gindin wrote: > > spamming hardly befits a "distinguished" person > > Sean Tikkun wrote: >> Can folks on this board help me out here? Re: very nice experience at University Village Apple Store in Seattle Washington
yeah, in deed. and I'm sure safari's bugs will all get worked out in time too. the only reason i really want firefox is so I can use webvisum. although, there's that solona captcha solving service, so maybe webvisum isn't even needed. still, it would be nice if firefox was accessible and I hope they take it seriously and do it. peace and positivity Jessi follow me on twitter www.twitter.com/canadian_diva On 28-May-09, at 2:08 PM, gene wrote: > > Hi yeah I hope that mozilla will make firefox accessible I mean it's > accessible with jaws and window eyes for windows so I curtainlly > don't see > why they wouldn't make it work with voice over. Re: very nice experience at University Village Apple Store in Seattle Washington
I don't think you're wrong. I'm sure it's only a matter of time. like someone else said it seemed people were freaking out when the GUI interface came to computers and people found ways to make it accessible to us so I'm sure the same will be done for touch screens in time. Re: Refreshable Braille displays
oh man I'm always disabling that highlight line!! makes reading s hard!! I wish it would remember not to display that, lol. I find also sometimes if I'm reading a long email or something, I'll only be able to read so far into it with the braille display before it won't display anything else new. then I have to reinteract with it and then I'm able to read the whole thing. I don't use my braille display all the time, but I like reading personal emails with it. for some reason it makes them even more enjoyable lol. and sometimes I'll just mute Alex and use the braille display for everything for awhile. then I can listen to music at whater volume I want, lol. yay for braille displays and their awesomeness!!! peace and positivity Jessi follow me on twitter www.twitter.com/canadian_diva On 2-Jun-09, at 11:41 PM, James Dietz wrote: > > Aside from a few issues (mainly VO's inability to remember braille > settings across multiple sessions - like whether or not to display > that obnoxious highlight line) braille is quite effective and neat. > Some things aren't intuitive - I can't click on a member of a group > in while browsing a webpage (in group mode of course) with one of the > routing buttons until I actually interact with that group. I agree with Dan. I think more apps will be accessible in time. now that people are finding out about voiceover on the IPhone, just like on the mac, they'll start writing apps with accessibility in mind. and who knows, maybe some apps are accessible already just cuz of how they're written? safari acting strange
hey guys I'm trying to view videos on this site, www.theifactor.ca some of my friends are in this and I wanted to listen/vote for them. I've tried everything, but I can't get the videos to play!! they seem to be images. can someone else take a look and see if you can get them to play? this is really annoying cuz it even mentions that you can view the site in safari!! and this is a music contest for blind people, so it really bothers me that the page isn't fully accessible. thanks. question about the trackpad/touch screen?
hey guys, I'm sending this to both list cuz it applies to both. I'm just curious. since there's the trackpad in snowleopard and the touch screen on the iphone, wouldn't they both get activated accidently? my mom had a touch screen phone once and she traded it in for a blackberry cuz she couldn't stand the touch screen. everytime she talked on it, she kept accidently pressing buttons on the phone and she kept ending her calls. would this be an issue with the iphone? or is there a way to disable the touch screen when youre actually in a call? also, it would be the same on the mac. since you can now control voiceover with the trackpad, wouldn't you accidently control things with your wrists while you're typing? or is the trackpad so much out of the way that you wouldn't hit it while you were typing? --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Re: question about the trackpad/touch screen?
yeah, that's true, I don't think my mac will be able to use the trackpad cuz it's older and just has the regular mouse pad and I was lead to believe that the trackpad is different and only comes on the new aluminum macbooks? so I might have to miss out on that bit of fun unless you can do it with a regular mouse pad lol. Re: Recognizing a heading which is also a link
hey Felix, yep, you have to interact with the heading, at least that's what I've found. it won't let you click the link unless you interact with the heading first and then you figure out that there's a link there. it's kind of misleading!! however, didn't someone say this would be fixed in snow leopard? or is my early morning brain just imagining things? I thought I heard something recently about headings and links? so, if that's the case, then you shouldn't have to suffer this weird voiceover bug for very long!! w00t, lol. I think that was the whole problem. he didn't know the links were there, or if he did then he'd wonder how he'd know. and it's true, you don't really know, which is why it really needs to get fixed. in deed. I swear I heard someone on this list say it was gonna be fixed? or maybe the dude in the illegal podcast said it? that's probably where I got it from lol. that podcast is messing with my mind. I'm pretty sure it'll be fixed, though. I can't wait to see what other things will be fixed with web navigation! I didn't fully pay attention when I listened to the podcast and I don't think it was an accurate representation of what's new since it didn't seem to be the final version of snow leopard and it seemed to have quite a few bugs in it even when he was demoing it. exciting times a comin'!! hurry up september! a spotlight question
hey guys this question isn't really related to voiceover, but I thought I'd ask it here anyway as it relates to the well being of my poor macbook, lol. so, lately every time I try to do a spotlight search, my mac freezes. voiceover says the finder is busy and the fan revs up really loud. even when I go in and relaunch finder, it continues to rev until I shut it down. I'm not sure if these are related, but the fan seems to rev up more frequently lately just randomly when I launch certain apps, like if I'm on skype and I launch mail, it'll start to rev a bit. it only has a gig of ram, but it wasn't doing this before and skype and mail aren't very intense programs I wouldn't think. it's also been running really hot lately. we are having a heat wave here, so that could be part of it, but I just fear I'm gonna burn it out or something!! anyone have any suggestions for keeping my poor macbook baby happier? and fixing this weird spotlight problem? thanks. mail busy?
hey guys so I think my poor macbook is rebelling against me or something lol. I love him to death and am so glad he's not a pc, but he's just acting strange!! first the spotlight issue, which I still haven't been able to get resolved...I looked at the page Felix sent me and my head just about exploded while looking at the instructions...the terminal scares me!! I don't know at all how to use it and if I messed something up, I don't have money to be taking poor mac into the apple store for fixing!! so, I dunno what I'm gonna do there...maybe I'll google for some more Jess friendly instructions? lol. but lately I've also noticed that mail has been busy a lot while writing messages. I just went and emptied my trash folders for both of my addresses and that seems to have fixed it for the moment, but is there a way to back up emails? I'd like to back up my sent messages and then i could empty mail out even more and it would be even less bogged down. I'm way too sentimental and like to keep sent messages, lol. thanks!! I agree. I'm getting annoyed with the lack of flash. I once emailed apple and asked about the inaccessability of live journal voice posts, which use flash, and they told me to contact adobe. Re: clean install or upgrade?
I plan to do a clean install also and plan to record it too. I'm not sure if I'll spread it around, I guess it depends on how well I feel it goes, lol. this is my first time ever installing an OS on any platform though, so I thought it should be recorded haha. can someone explain the steps for doing a "clean install?" I'm sure it's been discussed to death but I've been away at my cabin and had about 2000 messages in my inbox so didn't pay much attention as I rapidly deleted, lol. I assume a clean install means deleting leopard and all other data? which would of course mean backing up first...I can't use time machine cuz it won't work with my external drive without me deleting everything off it and I'm so not doing that, so I plan to just copy and paste all my data and stuff over. I guess I'll lose my emails, but maybe there's some way other than time machine of archiving them before I do this? and now I'll stop rambling, I'm sure I'm not making much sense. it's time for bed and book for me. but I just wanna make sure I have all the steps in place for when the big moment comes!!! I'm pretty excited about it!! gmail and sl? and importing addressbook contacts?
hey guys!! this is the first real email i've sent using sl that wasn't a test, lol. yay! installation went well, I recorded my adventures if anyone wants to hear, lol. I'm really happy over all, the new web stuff loos great! it's much more snappy! but gmail isn't working so hot. I set it up with all the settings suggested on gmail's website. I've tried both pop and imap. I've removed and re-added the accounts several times. all the settings are as they should be. right now I have it set as imap, and one of my two gmail accounts downloads messages fine, which is the one this list uses, but my one I use for personal emails doesn't receive at all. and when this list mail one downloads, it seems to download several copies of the same message. I really wish I could use pop, I'm more familiar with it, but it didn't work at all. so I ran out of ideas! pop seems to be broken in mail 4.0 and sl unless anyone has any suggestions for making it work properly?I'd just really like to be able to recrive and send messages from both my accounts like I could before. has anyone had any of these problems and gotten gmail to work successfully? also, before Installed sl, I copied my user folder from leopard onto my external hard drive so I'd be able to do a clean install. turns out I wasn't able to copy it back cuz the drive was formatted for windows, I used it with my old windows computers before I switched. I didn't know this would be an issue, but I got around it by copying my documents and downloads folders, where most of my data was stored, to the new user account in sl. but how do I get my addresses back? thanks for all your help. these few little things are making sl a little bit of a less enjoyable experience. getting old addressbook contacts back?
hey guys I know I asked this last night with my gmail message, but I'm not sure if that message went through and now my gmail issues seem to be fixed knock on wood!! so my next issue, I'm trying to get all my addressbook contacts back. before I installed SL I copied my old leopard user folder to my external drive thinking I'd just be able to import it all back in during the SL setup process. unfortunately I couldn't do this cuz the drive was formatted for windows, and I didn't know that would make a difference but clearly it did. so I got around it by just copying all my data over into the correct folders in the new user folder on sl. but now I wanna get my old addressbook contacts back. I'd like to get my old emails back too, but I'll start with addressbook contacts. how would I go about doing this? I assume it's possible, cuz if you can get stuff off a pc onto a mac then you must be able to import stuff from a drive that's formatted for windows. thanks. Re: male in snowleopard and gmail
I was definitely having major gmail issues when I first installed SL and I tried so many things that I'm not sure how they finally got fixed, lol. my issues were that I could send mail fine, but I'd set up my two accounts in mail and one would receive and the other wouldn't. I think what I ended up doing that fixed it was I deleted the "mail" folder out of my library and then reloaded mail, and it looked like I'd never launched it before. then I put both accounts back in and made sure all the settings and port numbers were correct and they eventually worked. it was quite a process though!! no longer able to find search results with mobile facebook?
hey guys I'm not sure if this is a facebook change or an sl change, but I just tried to search for and add a friend on facebook with the mobile site. it said it showed two search results, but wouldn't let me see them. so I went to the regular facebook site and did the same search and was this time able to find my friend when I clicked add as friend link, voiceover didn't do anything though. I tried several times and still nothing. I hope I didn't just try to add them a bunch of times, I'll feel real silly then lol!! but has something changed on the mobiel site where you can no longer actually see our search results or is this a bug in SL accessibility? thanks Jessi and Goldina --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. I find voiceover to be a tad bit more sluggish when arrowing through when quicknav is on, but maybe that's just cuz my mac only has a gig of ram. I'm not sure why quicknav would make a difference, and really it's only like a milisecond slower, but I notice it. other than that I don't find it slow.
