Re: Here is the Text of the User Manual for the Nearby Explorer, for iOS, GPS Navigation App

I guess I am smart enough to be able to tell which side of the street I am on.
The concern is about the destination.

You are wrong about it but it is a problem. It has been a couple of months
since I have done it and I apologize for not recalling how I got around it. It

I know this seems frustrating but it really is an excellent RSS reader.

Re: Can't Stop the Collapsed Disclosure Triangle message in mail

2014-03-04 Thread Geoff Stephens
I also achieved the desired result (not to have the disclosure triangle spoken
at all in Mail) in 10.9.1. However, I am also experiencing the
extremely annoying phenomenon where it is spoken in Mail no matter where I set

Re: Can I merge multiple HTML files into one file.

2014-03-16 Thread Geoff Stephens
Annie -
I wouldn't buy a tool to do that. But it may depend on how many files you
mean. You can open the files in an editor and just concatenate them by saving
the entire file. A lot of modern word processors will open HTML files and you
can simply open multiple files and then save them as a single file.

It is also possible to approach this from other angles depending on your goals.
I don't know much regarding how to go about handling something like this with
the Mac but used to deal with it in Windows.

Nevertheless, this is a pretty simple thing, and I wouldn't think it would be
necessary to spend any money to accomplish it. Maybe it would be good to know
more about what you need to do.

discovered that I was in the setup section. So I had to VO and right arrow to
the place to hear the percentage of that. Once it got past the setup, and that
took about five minutes, then my computer worked fine.

However, guys, my Focus 14 still won't pair with my Mac, even after the update.
I am writing this on my Braille Edge 40 which still works with my computer just

Re: Using Vienna help

2014-06-23 Thread Geoff Stephens
Make sure to use the vertical layout. Choose Layout from the View Menu and set
it to vertical.

You should be able to use the up and down arrows in the Folder List, press the
Right Arrow when the desired folder is located, then review the article list
using up and down arrows without having to interact with anything.

If you choose to use VO J at that point, it should switch between the folder
list, article list and the HTML area that displays the article depending on how
much is downloaded.

Pressing Enter should open the article. I find what works best is to set it so
that the article opens in the external browser. Set this in
Preferences/General.
I would have given up a long while back if I had to use the menu to open an
article.

I think I posted a lot of other things I found on the other list. Well, not
too much more but.

At the moment I'm picking a feed from the table of feeds, moving

find an article I want to read I go into the context menu and pick
"open article page". This opens the article in a separate tab and I
need to go and find that tab, select it, then find the html content,
interact with and read it.

Someone on another list suggested I should be able to do a VO j when
in the articles list which should jump me to the html content. I had
this working at one point but it's not now. When Ihˆ press VO j I get
jumped in between the articles table and the feeds table. I don't
know what's different between when this was working and now that it's
not.

Has anyone any suggestions on how to move a bit quicker? Would love
to hear how other people are using vienna.

Re: Using Vienna help

2014-06-24 Thread Geoff Stephens
Catherine -
If you are happy with what you are doing, by all means stick with it. The
reason I prefer to have the articles open in an external browser is so that I
can quickly enable the reader with Command Shift R if it is available, thus
saving me some time trying to find the text of articles in those sometimes very
busy news sites. But I have experimented with things to try to duplicate what
is happening to you and I guess there are some advantages.

One thing that might solve the issue with getting back to the article list is
to be sure not to have more than one article tab open. Once you are done with
an article, press Command W to close it and I think you should land in the
article list. But that may also depend on the layout.

On Jun 24, 2014, at 2:07 PM, Catherine Turner
 wrote:

Hi Jeff,

Thanks for the info, and everything you said before. I have it set to
vertical layout but this approach still isn't working - I can arrow up
and down the folder list, press right when finding a folder I want,
arrow up and down the article list. But then when I press VO j it
jumps me back to the folder list, not the html content. Don't know
why.

But the good news is I found another way which seems to work well.
After finding an article I want I press enter. I haven't set it up to
open in external browser and it seems when I press enter it opens in a
new tab but doesn't select that tab. So I then press command option
right arrow which selects the next tab and also puts VO in the html
content. When I've finished reading I press command w to close that
tab and I land back where I was in the article list. So in case
anyone else has trouble perhaps you can try that method as well.
Mysterious as to why the first method isn't working for me but never
mind.

Thanks for your help,
Catherine

Re: KeyRemap4Macbook is broken for me

2013-10-23 Thread Geoff Stephens
It seems broken if you upgrade. I’m going to try to re-establish it/set it up
again as I also rely on caps lock for VO.

As for its companion in VM?Ware is that Sharpkeys? I have had a lot of
problems with the keys generally on the right side of the keyboard using JAWS
in a VM when the JAWS key is caps lock. In fact, it is the main reason I
installed Windows via Bootcamp. I would rather get the entire keyboard working
well with JAWS and just go to a virtual machine as little as possible when I
need Windows.

As I posted here before, caps lock and most of the keys on the rights side of
the keyboard don’t work for me in a VM.

Re: Change to quick key behaviour in Safari in Mavericks

Although I can sympathize with your frustration with having combo boxes/popup
buttons mixed in the b quick key, it is also a reason to celebrate since it was
not possible that I could find to quickly navigate to a popup button/combo box
before. This was equally as frustrating to me. I haven’t experimented with
this yet but any way to quickly navigate to them is better than no way at all.
Maybe I was just missing something before since I am a very new user. I would
like a way to move to these elements separately.

I would encourage everyone who was using these keyboard apps to update them or
completely uninstall them. Don’t just let them linger unattended if you
upgraded from Mountain Lion.
Several very odd keyboard anomalies have been solved since I updated them.
One very strange thing was that when I opened an app from Finder, then closed
the app, I could no longer open another app from finder without moving focus
away from Finder and returning. I also think VO-J was affected in certain
circumstances. There were other keyboard weirdnesses that I can’t adequately
document at this point.

Now that I have updated both and checked to make sure everything is set
correctly, things have smoothed out considerably for me with Mavericks and the
keyboard.

All you need is a full version of Windows that is not an upgrade version. The
system builder version is not necessary and costs a lot more.

Re: installing Bootcamp

2013-12-28 Thread Geoff Stephens
I don’t want to go digging around to find documentation for why you don’t have
to have a system builder version. It’s everywhere in the Apple Bootcamp
documentation.
It is absolutely not necessary.

Also, the reason I recommended calling is exactly for the reasons you mention.
It is hard to find. I encountered all the same with regard to only finding
upgrades on the online store.

If you want to go with a system builder version fromAmazon, go for it! I had
to purchase two Windows versions recently for two different Macbook Airs and
one of those I went with was a full version of Windows via eBay for $39 I
think. But I did have to resort to Microsoft for the other one. And you run
the risk from purchasing from an individual on eBay that the key will be sold
to multiple individuals and become problematic after it is activated too many
times.

You can call the Microsoft Store if you want a full version of Windows 8 for a
somewhat reasonable price, $119 in my case, that you can be assured is a viable
copy of Windows without paying the Microsoft price of $199 for the system
builder version last time I checked.

OEM Windows is not supposed to work for Bootcamp. I can’t say whether this is

I suspected something like this might be possible but didn’t want to try it at

a version of Windows on your machine, and this time you can enter your license

Screen reader in Virtual machine

2013-10-08 Thread Geoff Stephens
Well, I am brand new to the Mac OS, having just purchased a Macbook Air. My
goal for doing so was that I really think the PC itself is quite reliable and
usable for what I want to do. I would like to have a way to use both Mac OS
and Windows interchangeably. Obviously, a lot of others have had the same idea.

I first installed Windows 8 in a virtual machine using VMWare Fusion 6,
thinking this might be a vial option. Although I was somewhat happy with the
performance, I was not happy enough to continue without Bootcamp. However, one
of the things I noticed after remapping the caps lock key to act as the VO keys
and consequently allowing me to use the laptop keyboard layout in JAWS in the
virtual machine, was that I had a strange problem with the keyboard that I'm
hoping someone can help me puzzle out.

I'm using the latest Macbook Air. When I used caps lock with the keys on the
left side of the keyboard, everything worked as expected in the virtual
machine. However, when I tried to use the caps lock keys for key combinations
on the right side of the keyboard for things like routing the JAWSCursor,
reading by word, character, etc, they did not work at all.
I used the suggested method detailed on Applevis with
KeyRemap4Macbook and PCKeyboardHack to disable the caps lock and reconfigure
the VO keys.

I have since deleted the virtual machine so can't pinpoint the exact keys that
did not work at this point. I decided to go with Bootcamp and now have it
installed and successfully working with JAWS. However, in my zeal to
experiment, I now have an unactivated version of Windows 8 since I had first
installed as a virtual machine and then installed with the same key on the
Bootcamp partition.

Nevertheless, I am contemplating setting my Bootcamp partition as a virtual
machine to have the best of all possibilities, and M hoping someone has
encountered this keyboard oddity with a Macbook Air and can advise me how to
proceed to get the keys working as they should.

I'm sure I will also have lots of questions regarding VO use with the OS X side
of things, and I also have some questions about keyboard remapping in
Bootcamp/Windows with which I seem to be having trouble and Sharpkeys does not
seem to have the answers. But I'll save all those questions for future posts.

This is my first meaningful post using Apple Mail. I really like it so far!

Re: Screen reader in Virtual machine

Paul -
Thanks for the response. I only hope that once I reactivate my Windows
installation in Bootcamp, it will also be reactivated under the virtual machine
if they are already associated.

I am still considering whether to go with both. Thanks for the suggestion of
simply assigning an insert key.
