Re: question of Outlook tell recognizer
Hi there Gigi, The answer, as always, is "maybe." The Recognizer as always, looks for an Image that has been saved to your I Phone. If you take a picture, and then try to find the same place, as long as you are standing in the same place and aiming the phone at the same angle, it should work. But, as with any new app, try it out and see if it works. Let us know. I also assume that lighting will be a big issue. Try taking pictures on different days. Sunny days have shadows, cloudy days do not. Good luck. Re: Finale or music editor for mac?
If you have low vision, Sibelius is somewhat usable. My vision is not good enough to use it effectively so I Have give up. You cannot even label buttons. You can change the pitch of notes, so even if you cannot see the note, if you're good enough to write music, you're probably good enough to recognize what note is being played. The cheaper version of Sibelius is about $125, so you may want to test drive a demo version. Bottom line, if you can't see, you can't write music on a computer, at least not any more. How to keep I Photo from automatically loading
On my friend's new I Mac, I Photo keeps loading at startup. I canceled this option via I Photo in the Doc . Is there another area where I have to turn a check box off? I was having problems with Mail reading every conversation twice. I believe the problem was that I had mail grouped by conversaition in Mail on my Mac and also on the G Mail server. I am leaning twards a Mac Mini with a full size bluetooth keyboard with NumPad and a wired mouse. Also, he will need a monitor for when his wife needs to help him out. What do the rest of you mini users have. Do you also add a USB DVD player? Thanks for your advise. He will be happy if he could just download NLS books from the BARD site without having to ask his wife for help. I, myself, have an 21 Inch IMac that I have had for four years. I got my first Mac, the Mac Plus, in 1985 when I had more usable vision and could read the screen with an 8x magnifying lens. The good old days when we thought one megabyte of RAM was amazing. I didn't get a response to what's wrong with the extended keyboard my friend got, so, I will ask another question. What is the best extended keyboard out there, either wireless or usb, for the blind mac user. I personally like the bluetooth keyboard that came with my five year old I Mac. Unfortunately, Apple doesn't make this one any more. He needs something with some heft to it so it gives good, tactile feedback. To help myself, I stick little bumpers on the G and H keys and the F4 and F8 keys to make finding the home row easier. What do you use? Re: Problems with new extended keyboard
I figured out the solution last night. In frustration, I went to the keyboard pane in preferences. One of the options was to use function keys as regular function keys. I check the box, and guess what, all of the function keys worked as function keys. Problem solved. Tom . Matais keyboard on sale
Hello Esther , et. al., I went to Small Dog in Burlington VT this morning to buy the Matais keyboard. When I went to pay for it, it was on sale from $139.95 down to $109.00 I don't know if this is a Presidents' day sale or not, but if anyone is thinking about buying this keyboard, it may be on sale at other venders as well. It is a bit noisy, but the keys are very tactile and I have no problems finding my way around. For us older folks who learned to type on a, what do you call those things; oh yes, a typewriter, the feel is like the old days. Unless the policy has changed, you will not be able to read NLS books on your Mac. Each device, like the BookPort Plus and the Victor Reader Stream, must have an authorization key to read NLS books. Re: Matais keyboard on sale
Sorry about that. The spelling is Matias. The Matias Tactile Pro is a full size keyboard with function keys and numeric keypad. The function keys are in groups of four just like older keyboards. Also, the keys are like stadium seating, each row is slightly higher than the row below it so finding the home row and other rows is a snap. As I mentioned before, you wouldn't want to use this keyboard in a quiet office or at a meeting since if is quite noisy. You could call this a feature because you get a lot of audible feedback each time you type a key. Also like keyboards of old, it has three USB ports to plug in a mouse or other peripheral. A use a wired mouse, even though I rarely use a mouse, so I don't have to worry about replacing the batteries. If you want something portable, this is not for you although it only ways two pounds. Re: fn key on the full sized keyboard
Maybe I'm a little off base, but I don't think there is a FN key on a full size keyboard. A full size keyboard, by definition, has function keys. There all on the top row. Re: nls book readers
Hi all, I got the advanced talking book player when they first came out last summer. Although I was stationed in Huntsville Alabama for my entire service, I am a Service connected Vietnam era Vet. It's like pre boarding at the airport, if someone is willing to let me go to the head of the line, I've learned to say thank-you and go to the head of the line. As for the player; it's great. I download books regularly from the NLS BARD site and have enough reading material to keep me busy for a couple of years. I bought a couple of thumb drives, four gig models, and each holds over ten large books. If you can eventually get the advanced model, it's well worth the wait to get the bookmarking feature. Make sure your name is on your library's waiting list. The squeaky wheel gets the greased player. Re: Office 2008 Accessibility
Hi Chad, Let's not forget TextEdit, the work processor that comes with the Mac. The price is right, it comes with every Mac, and will do what most people want; letters, notes, short papers, etc. I use Mail exclusively so no need for Microsoft Office. Re: NLS DTB players, usb flash drives, formating on a mac, cartrage errors Help?
Hi there, I don't know anything about windows formating, but I do about the NLS player. I use 4 gjig thumbn drives without any problems. I insert them in the same slot as the regular cartridges go. This way they are protected; a little more difficult to get them in and out but a lot safer. According to NLS, larger thumb drives will give you a problem. I bought a three pack at Costco for around 30 dollars. I was sure hoping for an I Phone daisy NLS app but I don't think it will ever happen. Hi all, My wife has to have the latest toys so we stopped by after work today and picked up her new 15 inch Mac Pro. After she's done playing I'll let you know how it works with VO. Re: Mail messages not being read automatically
I use the tab key to go to the mail preview pane and it reads automatically. I'm having a bit of a problem with consistency but navigation in mail is getting better. Make sure you have quick nav off. It drove me nuts for a while until I realized it had been turned on by mistake. To toggle quick nav on and off, hold down both right and left arrows.. Re: Mail not Reading Automatically - Oh Rats
Hi all, I now get VO to read the preview pane automatically. I VO right arrow over to the Subject line of a message to see if I want to read or delete it. If it the subject line of a tread I right arrow to open the thread. Then I tab down to the preview pane and VO reads everything. If it doesn't work the first time, I shift Tab back to the message line and then tab back to the preview pane. works every time.
