Two questions about virtual machines and a brief intro

2012-08-15 Thread Damashe Thomas
Hello List,

My name is Damashe Thomas and I am fairly new to the macvisionaries group. I
live in the great state of Georgia. I have been a very happy iOS user for the
past four years and am preparing to make the move to the mac.
I have two quick questions to get started.
Does anyone have experience with the latest version of parallels and can speak
about the accessibility of that app. Is it a possible option or should I just
go with VMWare fusion?
I like the ability to run windows in a virtual machine when I have to use it,
but has anyone run in to any issues using applications like kurzweil or
openbook in a virtual windows environment?

Thanks
Damashe

Hi,
Thanks, I had a choice of a free copy of parallels or fileMaker Pro. I had
heard a few years ago that parallels wasn't accessible, but didn't know about
any recent updates.

My thanks to Kawal, Emilio and others for the answers. I will buy fusion and

Hello Damashe,

First, if you are wanting to exicute the installation and full
operation of Windows on the Mac, I would highly recommend VMware
Fusion.
Reviewing the archives will provide a thorough set of directions that
will help you learn how to install Windows, as should the product web
site.
I'm not an expert and in no way consider myself highly technical, but
I have been able to install and run Windows within 25 minutes of
reading & following the instructions others have kindly posted.
If you purchase Fusion, and insert a university into the college name
you will get a 50% discount, which is a great thing.
I have been able to install and effectively run Kurzweil 1000, as well
as Duxbury 10.7. Moreover, after initial setup, JFW11 has run very
well with no problems on my machine. Once you get your virtual machine
configured, make a snapshot that you can refer to when you need to
virtually reformat. :)
Note you will need considerable hard drive space (at least I do). I
have roughly 40GB set aside for my virtual machine.
If you need any other help or if you wish to discuss this further feel
free to reply - cheers.

Hello Alex. I'm using Windows 7 in VM Fusion. Yes, In many instances it can
take a minute or two to recognize pages. On the other hand, my wife has Windows
XP running in Bootcamp and pages are recognized in a matter of seconds. There
are a couple of other things you should know. Focus Braille Drivers do not load
in the Virtual Machine and Freedom Scientific is not willing to help resolve
the issue because they don't support running JAWS or any of their applications
in Virtual machines. Finally, any time you change the configuration of your
Virtual Machine you lose an activation. Freedom Scientific is not willing to
issue additional keys very often. On the plus side, You can install Windows
without sighted assistance. You can also add printers and read and write
documents stored on the Mac side. In addition, because your virtual machine is
just an image, it's easy to restore it from a backup. So you can see that thare
are tradeoffs. After considering all of them, I'm willing to switch over to
Bootcamp for the increased performance. I'll use Drop Box whenever I need to
move folders from the Mac side to the Windows side.

One word: NVDA. Go to http://www.nvda-project.org to find out more and
download this program, but it's basically a free screen reader that is updated
regularly, has no licensing or driver problems, and... well, it's free! After
all, do you really need to pay hundreds for a screen reader on an OS you use
seldom enough that you can run it virtually? Maybe you do, I'm not trying to
start anything, but it seems like a valid question. If you can get by with a
free screen reader for the times you do need Windows, you could save a lot of
money, time, and aggravation by not dealing with jfw, which is not even
supported on virtual machines. To be fair I have not yet tried nvda on a vm,
but I have not heard of anyone having problems with it on the development or
support email lists. Now, off to research virtualbox so I can have a leg to
stand on regarding nvda on a vm...

Re: In search of accessible password vault

2012-09-04 Thread Damashe Thomas

Hi,
Thanks a lot for the details. I was about to start searching list archives
to see if 1Password for iOS had been discussed. I too learned a lot about it
from the mac power users podcasts. Dr. Carter's interview with Katie Floyd
is where I first heard about there podcast and it is a great resource. Even
though I am not the one who asked the question, you certainly answered the
ones I had and I am going to buy 1password for iOS right now. It would be
nice if you have any particular tips for using it on the iPhone or any
things I should be aware of. I am trying the free windows version right now,
but expect a new mac anytime nowso I won't be purchasing the windows
license.

Hi,

By the time of this writing, 1Password is accessible, as long as you stick
with the app itself, and don't bother with its safari extension, other than
auto filling in a login once you are on that page. You can easily google
1password, but to answer your questions: yes it is multi platform, it is for
mac, windows and ios, probably android but I'm not sure of that, and it can
sync via dropbox, amogn other ways. Having your encrypted keychain in
dropbox means, that you manage your chain yourself, and it is not stored
online somewhere. I have both the mac and the iphone version, and they are
workable. If tiny things were improved in their interfaces, life would
become a whole lot easier for VoiceOver users. But for now, it already works
for all sorts of things, like your web logins, say, for the skype site, for
your banking site, the vm ware site if you use that and all things similar,
but there's a lot more.

It can also hold identities. Difference with a login is that an identity is
similar in that it is also a keychain element, but it obviously is made up
of other fields. In an identity, you store your name, street city and zip
code, phone number etc etc, and if a website asks for those, you can have
1password fill in some or all of that.

The 1password app has essentially a simple interface, where you have a list
of things on the left, such as logins, identities, secure notes, wallet
items, software license keys and more, and if you click one of these things
in the sidebar, which is where they all are, then that contents will appear
on the right. If you open, for instance, the logins item from the sidebar,
they appear on the right, in what VoiceOver calls an object list. This is
simply a list view where you arrow up and down, to find the login you want.
You can open or edit your login info from there.

The same holds for all other items. If you want to add a software license
for example, just go to the sidebar, find software licenses, stop
interacting with the sidebar, and move over to the right. There you have an
interactable object list with all your license items so far, if any, and to
the right of that list, at least from a voiceover perspective, you then have
an add item, button. Once the new dialog opens, you'll find that you can
read all text fields in there.

I'm still looking into several work arounds to get stuff into the interface,
and yes for VoiceOver users, things have room for improvement. Where the
smooth magic is already there for regular users, we'll have to wait for, or
get involved in, more VoiceOver support. Small amendments can make a lot of
difference for VoiceOver.

I bought 1password and it serves my needs, although it is still clunky for
us in some ways.
For example. It has a strong password generator, which is handy on sites
where you either change your existing login into a new login with a strong
password, or where you create a new account. Of course, you can use the
strong password generator just anywhere, like for apps on your mac, for your
time capsule password if you have one, your wifi network etc, all strong
passwords. The password generator creates an unguessable strong password
consisting of letters numbers symbols etc, and the settings for that are
just fine and readable inside the 1password app. But, generating a new
strong password, unless someone can come up with an alternative, requires me
to leave safari on the "create account" page, open the 1password app because
you want to avoid the safari extension because of its lack of accessibility,
and then unlock the 1password app, find the password generator in the
sidebar, tweak its options, have your password generated, copy that to the
blipboard, move back to safari, find the text field for your new password,
paste it in, and hit create account on the site, hoping that a 1password
question will pop up from its safari extension and remain readable without
VoiceOver setting focus back to the site so that you can complete this
dialog, asking to save this login for future use. It is very clear how the
safari extension that c

Re: A Skype Query on the I Phone.

2012-09-04 Thread Damashe Thomas

Hi,
In my experience with the latest version of skype, during a call, I have to
tap a button that says something like show dial pad. Then I have to doulbe
tap or use the split method to enter a number. The keypad is somewhat
strange and it doesn't recognize touch typing. I hope this helped.

Subject: A Skype Query on the I Phone.

Hello All.

Now that the Skype application is more accessible on the I phone and as I
got rid of my Skype Adaptor which I was using on my chordless phone at home
but using it no more, I am wishing to use Skype on my I phone to burn my
unused credit. However, if I call my bank, I am unable to key in numbers
such for my account number and other info required so that I can use the
automated service as when I bring up the dial pad, the numbers are displayed
across rather than a traditional dial pad where you get one two three and
then you move down a row and you get four five six you get the picture. Can
some one tell me if they have ever been able to key in numbers when you are
using skype whilst on another call using it? If not, who to contact to make
this feature accessible namely the person who is in charge of making this
application more accessible please? I know this question may be better on
the I phone list, but I do not belong to that.

Thanks in advance.

Kawal.

Re: selling my mac

2012-09-28 Thread Damashe Thomas
Thanks for that clarification Ester. I was just about post asking that
question, as I was fairly certain the 2012 macbook pros, minus the retna,
were upgradable.

You are always a great provider of information, so thanks again.

Hi Chris, Alex, Pam, and Others,

Just a small correction: the 2012 models of the MacBook Pro in 13"
size are upgradable in the same way that the 20122 MacBook Pros are.
It is only the 15" MacBook Pros with Retina graphics that can't be
upgraded among the 2012 MacBook Pro line. Like the MacBook Air,the
memory on these units is soldered onto the logic board, so you need to
decide how much memory you want when you purchase your system. The
15" Retina models also use proprietary SSD drives, and are hard to
open up. While the Unibody MacBook Pros use small screws, and are not
as easy to open and upgrade as the earlier models, there are standard
kits for this available from Other World Computing and other sources,
and you can upgrade both memory and hard drives.

Anne's correct that the MacBook Air models are very nice to use, and I
don't miss the lack of an optical drive in the MBA, but I can use the
optical drive of another Mac if I need this. I will point out that
you can use the SD slot on the MacBook Air (or on the MacBook Pro, for
that matter), to add some additional storage capacity. There's a
Kickstarter project called "The Nifty Mini-Drive" that has designed a
MicroSD card adapter for the SD card slot in these devices. The idea
is that it would sit flush with the side of your laptop, and you could
insert micro SD cards that you purchase into the adapter to use as
additional storage. This is more significant if you have a MacBook Air
with an SSD drive that is only 128 GB or 256 GB than if you have a
MacBook Pro, because being able to add a 64 GB (or larger, in future)
micro SD card has more of an impact for storage, even if it's not
giving you the SSD drive access speeds.

Here's the Kickstarter link:
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1342319572/the-nifty-minidrive

The estimated delivery date is November.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

I looked up this application, since I have it on my computer, even though
it's partially inaccessible on my Mac. However, for a big $4.99, I think I
will take a chance and see how it works. Then I'll write them another
letter, and they can say, all know, one of those voiceover user did it
again, and downloaded our app. What can I say. You know guys, if we don't
keep doing this, nobody is ever going to write an app that will read and

Re: PDFpen for iPhone is inaccessible

2012-10-04 Thread Damashe Thomas
I haven't had much success at all. I plan to get some sighted assistance to
find out exactly is being displayed and how a sighted person would interact
with the software. Then when I write smile, I can pass along details of
exactly how it isn't working. I couldn't even open a file when I first
downloaded the app, when double tapping on the file name, I got an edit
dialogue to rename. I was hoping I would be able to sign a document and

Here goes another letter writing exercise to smile software.

Re: Drop Box

You should make sure that the files put in dropbox on the computer have
completely uploaded to the server. Depending on the file size, this could
take some time. You said you are on windows 7 so checking the system tray

uploading x number of files if it is still uploading or you will get all

Re: ZoomText on the Mac Coming Soon

2012-11-29 Thread Damashe Thomas
I too am a VoiceOver only user. I have spoken at length with friends of mine
who are low vision users though. Not to stray to far off topic for this list,
but by all accounts from people I know, magnification on any version of windows
is hardly sufficient. As was stated earlier in this thread, comparing builtin
windows magnification to a product like zoom text is like comparing narrator to
jaws.
As for zoom text coming to the mac, if it does nothing else, it will certainly
be a familiar comfort for windows users who are considering switching. I say
this only because someone has expressed to me their hesitancy to switch because
they like the features of zoom text and don't think zoom on the mac gives them
all thse features. The mac users who are experienced with zoom may not wish to
even consider zoom text, but for new or those considering switching, it might
be that last push for them to make the complete change. I can't debate the
merrits of zoom on the mac because I can't see, just offering an opinion based
on conversations with magnification users.

I don't think there's any reason to make that comparison, it's just not valid.

Zoom on Mac works but it's not a sophisticated product. Voiceover works and
it IS a sophisticated product.

Ai Squared sees an opportunity to better Zoom related features. Also, the way
Voiceover works may be fantastic (your mileage may vary) for blind users but
for users who simply need reading "support" it's clear that there is an
opportunity to build it.

Put it this way, ZT Win does very well even though there is built in Zooming
on Windows and sophisticated (JAWS, Windows Eyes) screen readers on the market
as well as decent free ones (NVDA).
