Re: M3 15-inch MacBook Air vs M3 14-inch MacBook Pro -- Comparison

2024-03-15 Thread 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries
Hi Dave,

I can only answer for myself, but here you go. In 2017, I bought my one and
only MacBook Pro. All my other Macs, including my current 2023 M1 have been
MacBook Airs.

Brad makes a strong case that for an extra $100, the MBP is the better machine.
But I’ve always liked the smaller form factor and the lighter weight of the
MBA. When I taught face-to-face, I had to carry my computer with me around
campus. I also like to take it when I travel, so the smaller and lighter, the
better. The MBA has always met my computing needs, but I’m not an artist,
graphic designer, etc. I liked my MBP a lot, but I also thought it was
probably overkill for my use case. So, in 2020, when the M1 chips came out, I
went back to a MacBook Air. That said, From the specs Brad sent last night,
the difference in weight between the two seems pretty negligible. I was
thinking I might upgrade to the M3 Air, but now I’m not sure, either whether I
will upgrade, or, if I do, which machine I’ll get. My current leaning is to
just hold off and see what next year brings.
Cheers,
Donna

Brad,

Then why on earth did Apple decide that there was something distinctive about
an Air vs. Pro? Simply size and weight? Color choices? Is this a parallel to
the iPhone and - Pro vs. SE?

Open this folder when in Finder by pressing CMD + Shift + A, then press CL, to

Keep in mind, that the Apple Insider article was comparing a 15” MacBook Air,

The 13” MacBook Air would be lighter and smaller, and can be configured the

Yeah, I thought about that. And if I do get an Air, it will definitely be the
13-inch. But still, that pricing on the MBP is kinda tempting. OK, in
addition to my preference for things small and light, I’m also kind of a speed
freak. Those two factors sometimes make for an incongruous combination. :)

Re: M3 15-inch MacBook Air vs M3 14-inch MacBook Pro -- Comparison

2024-03-15 Thread Brad Snyder
The original MacBook Air at 11.6”, and 13.3”, was thinner and lighter than its
MacBook Pro cousin.
The original Air also had a less powerful processor..

2024-03-15 Thread 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries
Hi Dave,

I’m not a hardware expert by a long shot, but the MBPs have generally been more
powerful. Also, and I don’t see well enough to confirm this personally, I
think they have better displays.
Cheers,
Donna

What's the deal with the Globe key?

2024-03-15 Thread 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries
Hi all,

Well, it’s the last day of spring break, and I promised myself I would upgrade
to Sonoma this week. One question first. What’s the deal with the Globe key?
What is it used for? What’s the deal for those of us with older Macs that
don’t have one?
TIA,
Donna

Any vloggers here?

2024-03-15 Thread 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries
Hi again, all,

I want to create a vlog where I can post written and video content while I am
traveling this summer. Anyone know anything about the most accessible way to
do this? I know a lot of people like Wordpress, but in my very limited
experience, it did not seem overly accessible, or overly friendly if you don’t
know how to code. If I’m wrong about this, feel free to enlighten me. 😊

Can anyone compare Wordpress with Blogger in terms of how they work with VO on
both MacOS and IOS? I’m envisioning something pretty simple and
straight-forward. I’d just like to be able to upload written and video content
to a site, and have a link that I can share with family and friends who want to
follow along with our adventures, so hopefully there’s away to do that that
isn’t super complicated and that is accessible.

Thanks in advance for any words of wisdom.
Cheers,
Donna

Re: Any vloggers here?

2024-03-15 Thread Jürgen Fleger
Hi Donna,

Word Press is pretty accessible in my opinion. I use Mars as an app solution on
the Mac to upload content. So it's not necessary to work online.

But wouldn't it be easier in your case to use a messenger like Whats App and
create a family group? Just as an idea.

all the best
Jurgen

On older portable devices, it's referred to as the FN key.

It has various commands assigned to it when it is used in combination
with other keys.

Re: Any vloggers here?

2024-03-15 Thread 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries
Hi Jurgen,

Can you say more about Mars?

I thought about using something like What’s App or even Facebook, but I like
the vlog idea better. First, everything can just be housed there. That will
be convenient for anyone who wants to look at it, but not necessarily receive
alerts all the time. It also keeps the whole thing in one easy place, so that
it can serve as sort of a “photo album for us after we’re back, without getting
buried in whatever messages, posts, etc happen after we’re back
Cheers,
Donna

Re: M3 15-inch MacBook Air vs M3 14-inch MacBook Pro -- Comparison

2024-03-15 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Here is a summary from the tidbits article that might help you decide.
Do note that the MB pro computers do have a brighter display, but if you aren’t
really using the display I would go for the top of the line AIR over the bottom
of the line Pro.

https://tidbits.com/2024/03/04/new-m3-macbook-air-models-can-drive-two-displays/

Purchasing Decisions

These new MacBook Air models are compelling for anyone buying their first
MacBook Air, but do they provide sufficient improvements to prompt an upgrade?
It all depends on where you’re coming from.

If budget is paramount, you can save a little money by purchasing the M2
MacBook Air for as little as $999, though adding memory or storage pushes you
into a range similar to the M3 models.
If you’ve held onto an Intel-based Mac this long and are considering a MacBook
Air, upgrade immediately to an M3 MacBook Air. The performance jump from any
Intel-based Mac will knock your socks off, and the M3 models will enjoy a
longer lifespan than their M2 counterparts.
For those—like me—with an M1 MacBook Air, the main reason to upgrade is if you
need more performance than the M1 chip can provide. The M3 benchmarks show it
to be 25% to 35% faster
 than the M1, and
Apple cites more specific examples with larger gains
.
But if performance is a concern, also consider a MacBook Pro with an M3 Pro or
M3 Max processor.
If you have an M2 MacBook Air, the M3’s performance gains of 10% to 20%
probably aren’t
significant enough to warrant upgrading.
Regardless of what you have now, if you want to drive two external displays
from a laptop, the M3 MacBook Air models are a great buy. They’re much cheaper
than the M3 Pro MacBook Pro models you’d otherwise need that start at $1999 for
the 14-inch MacBook Pro and $2599 for the 16-inch model.
Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn

Re: What's the deal with the Globe key?

2024-03-15 Thread 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries
So, just to be clear, the Globe key is just another name for the FN key?
That’s easy. For some reason I thought it was an additional key added on newer
Macs.
TIA,

Rotor on iPhone

Hi all,
While in a text message, I invoked the rotor to select Links.
Something happened and can no longer find Links. Checked in the rotor
settings and Links is still selected. How to fix this? Thanks.

Re: Rotor on iPhone

2024-03-15 Thread Mary Otten
This has been a long-standing problem, and it doesn’t mean that the links
aren’t in your rotor. It means that a lot of text messages have links that
simply don’t show up as such. At least that’s been my experience. If I’m in a
text message that acts like this where the rotor doesn’t move to a link, I can
move to the link text using move by word. Once there, link is announced, but
double tapping on it never ever Works. This has been going on at least since
iOS 16 and I have reported it to no avail.

Re: Any vloggers here?

2024-03-15 Thread 'Mervin Keck III' via MacVisionaries
I love Mars Edit on my Mac. If there are any tutorials out there I would love
to know. I get the feeling I am not nearly using it to its potential. It was
recommended to me about three months ago and I am still teaching myself how to
use both WordPress and Mars Edit.

Re: Air vs. Pro

2024-03-15 Thread matthew dyer
Hi,

I think that for basic use such as word processing and email/web browsing then
the air should be fine. If you however do a lot of file editing with audio,
then you might want the pro. I think it all really depends on what you are
doing. With that said, the air machines seem to be getting more powerful thees
days.

2024-03-15 Thread 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries
Hi Merv,

Can you say more? What specifically do you love? Also, how do you work with
the block design in WordPress? It seems like it would be very intuitive if you
can see and figure out how to arrange the blocks, but I’m not sure how to work
with that if you can’t visually arrange them.
Cheers,
Donna

Can anyone compare Wordpress with Blogger in terms of how they work with
VO on both MacOS and IOS? I’m envisioning something pretty simple and
straight-forward. I’d just like to be able to upload written and video
content to a site, and have a link that I can share with family and

Thanks in advance for any words of wisdom.

Mars edit makes it possible to avoid using blocks. You can just type as if you
were editing a word document and then publish right to your blog. I have not
tried pcreating or publishing pages yet but for blogs it is great. I understand
that it also will work with Mastodon now. But I have not figured that out yet
either.

Somehow I locked myself out of my Blogger account. Appreciate any help

2024-03-15 Thread 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries
Hi all,

So when I went to log into my blog on my Mac, I received a prompt from VO
asking about using my gmail account in other apps. I said no, because I didn’t
want to set up gmail and all that. But it seems that in doing that, I caused
other problems. I can still modify the blog, but I get an error 403 message
that says I do not have access to the page. Anyone have any idea what I did or
how to fix it?
TIA,
Donna

Hi Merv,

If you could check I’d appreciate it. I downloaded the free trial, but I
don’t want to open it until I’m ready to start messing with it. :). But, that
isn’t your problem, so if it becomes too time-consuming, don’t worry about it.
Cheers,
Donna

 Hi again, all,

I want to create a vlog where I can post written and video content
while I am traveling this summer. Anyone know anything about the most
accessible way to do this? I know a lot of people like Wordpress, but
in my very limited experience, it did not seem overly accessible, or
overly friendly if you don’t know how to code. If I’m wrong about
this, feel free to enlighten me. 😊

Can anyone compare Wordpress with Blogger in terms of how they work
with VO on both MacOS and IOS? I’m envisioning something pretty
simple and straight-forward. I’d just like to be able to upload
written and video content to a site, and have a link that I can share
with family and friends who want to follow along with our adventures,
so hopefully there’s away to do that that isn’t super complicated and
 that is accessible.

Thanks in advance for any words of wisdom.
 Cheers,
 Donna

Hi,
I just looked through the options and if there is anything there for video I’m
not seeing it. That doesn’t mean it is not there. But I am a novice with the
app and do not see anything there but perhaps uploading it under media.

not figured that out yet either.
