I haven't tried the default calculator, but I have found the calc tool

Homebrew.

It's an arbitrary-precision calculator with a wide variety of features.

Re: Mac OS Calculator?

2024-02-19 Thread Doug Lee
I've never tried calc, but I've used bc for a long time when I need a quick
calculation. It's a wrapper
around dc, which is a postfix-format calculator perhaps more familiar to
officionados of HP hand-held
calculators. bc is algebraic in syntax. Both come with MacOS as far as I know.

Thank you for the recommendation.

At the other end of the sophistication scale is Sagemath, also available
in Homebrew. It's more than the ultimate calculator.

Re: Mac OS Calculator?

2024-02-19 Thread Doug Lee
Curiously I don't find sagemath in Homebrew; wonder if it left? I checked on
two Macs (one mine and one a
friend's).

I do find Sagemath in apt for Ubuntu/Debian, but not in yum/dnf under
AlmaLinux, for comparison.
www.sagemath.org looks healthy enough and lists MacOS binaries, so maybe that's
the modern approach for a
Mac.

Thanks for letting me know about that one. I wouldn't need that much complexity
often, but it's nice to know
where to find mathematical muscle when necessary.

However, I've been unable to renew. It's been very frustrating.

Re: Mac OS Calculator?

2024-02-19 Thread Jonathan Cohn
I did 3-4 tests with the calculator app and did not see any issues.
1. 12 + 5[enter] [command-c]
And then pasted the results in a terminal window
I then did
12/88[enter][command-c]
and the number in both cases was pasted successfully in a terminal window.

Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn

RSGames is a good one, especially if you’re into card games, or board games. I
think there’s another called “a blind legend, but this is a payed app, unless
that’s changed recently. Also, if you’re running an m1 Mac, fruitpot2 is a fun
and addictive game if you’re into slot machine games.
The only messed up thing about trying to run that one on the Mac, is it’s
designed for the iPad, so unlike the iPhone version, the fruits don’t read out
as they spin, so you just have to scroll through each item when the machine
finally stops.

Re: Reading Xls files on my Mac?

2024-02-19 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Hello,
I believe you stated .xls files, but Modern Excel uses .xlsx files. In any
case, if you have access to both and if Excel is accessible enough then you
should probably use Exel just because then you won’t have a conversion to
numbers.
Numbers does have its own quarks especially when editing formulas, but those
might be improved in newer versions of the program.

Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn

Trouble With iMap Account, iOS

2024-02-19 Thread pdevasto0219
Hi all,

One of my e-mail accounts is with Comcast, an iMap account. I noticed today
that my mail hasn't been updated for the last two days, and there is an
error message saying "no password provided for comcast". I went to Settings
to try and re-enter the password, but even though the characters are in the
edit box, I still get the message about no password provided. I even tried
deleting and then recreating the account, but I can't do that either.
Fortunatly I do have access to a Windows PC and mail is working OK there, so
I'm not dead in the water. Has anyone else noticed this behavior lately?

Thanks,

Pete De Vasto

Letterfull is an iOS game that works really well on the Mac. I have configured
my Numpad commander to do a few things like the magic tap for submitting words
which makes the game a little easier. There is also an iOS game I recently
tried called Words Command Line Jumble that is completely usable with VoiceOver
despite a few unlabeled buttons. If you enjoy Scrabble type games, WordVoyance
is a good option.

You should be able to play "interactive fiction" games on the Mac.
They're the only kind of game in which I have sustained an interest,
