Re: a question about compact voices.

2022-06-22 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

No need for Apple ID. You can download enhanced voices through VoiceOver
Utility, Speech, under the Voices tab. Interact with the Customized language
list table, locate the pop-up with the current selected voice, and choose
Custom from there. All the voices, both compact and enhanced are there.

Anyone know the command for enabling/disabling Voiceover speech on an Apple TV?

2022-06-22 Thread 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries
Hi all,

For some reason, since the last update, when I start our Apple TV, it starts
without speech. I think, though, that VO is on, because I hear the other VO
noises. I can always just turn VO off and back on, and then all is fine, but
I’m thinking I should be able to just activate speech. Is there a command for
doing that on the Apple TV remote? I seem to recall that there is one, but
Google yielded nothing.
TIA,
Donna

Re: Anyone know the command for enabling/disabling Voiceover speech on an Apple TV?

2022-06-22 Thread Les Kriegler
Hi Donna,

I have one of the older remotes, but what I do is locate the role of three
buttons. You would hold in the middle button and say “turn on voiceover. “That
will stay in effect until you wish to turn it off using the same procedure. We
use this often, as my wife doesn’t wish to hear the speech when she is viewing
the Apple TV contact. It works fine. S Sometimes, she forgets to do it, so I
want up doing it but it works as it should. I hope this is what you were
looking for.
Best regards,
Les

Mac Mail app problem "This mail has no content"" Help please

2022-06-22 Thread 'Ron S' via MacVisionaries
Hi there, I am getting the above message in mail from time to time. It is
mostly from one email sender but not exclusively. When I try to enter the mail
area I get “text”, but nothing else. I have been told by a sighted person that
there is a link saying something like “click to download content” and if
clicked it does download the message. However voiceover does not see any link
to click.
I have been through various settings and remote content blocking isn’t
selected. I am using AOL mail and this is intermittent. If I use my Iphone then
the message is there to read.
I thought this had been mentioned before but I cannot find it in the archives.
Any advice would be appreciated, Ron.

RE: hand-off

2022-06-22 Thread pdevasto0219
Brad,
For what it might be worth, I have a late 2014 Mac Mini running Mac OS
Monterey. Apparently in order for handoff to work, one of the things that is
not listed in Apple's support article about handoff is that your Mac has to
have something called Airplay Receiver enabled. The following article talks
about this feature, and when I went to System Preferences > Sharing and looked
at the available Services Table, Airplay receiver was not included in the list:
https://support.apple.com/en-md/guide/mac-help/mchleee00ec8/12.0/mac/12.0

RE: Anyone know the command for enabling/disabling Voiceover speech on an Apple TV?

2022-06-22 Thread etscrivani via MacVisionaries
I have an Apple TV 4K that I got back in 2017. On the left side of the two
columns of buttons, I hold down the middle round button and just tell it "turn
Voice Over Off". When I want VO to return I hold the same button down and tell
it "Turn Voice Over On."

2022-06-22 Thread 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries
Hi all,

Thanks for the responses. All of these are both ways of turning VO on and off,
which is what I’ve been doing. I just thought that, as on the phone, there was
a way to just turn speech on and off. If there’s not, I’ll just keep doing
what I’ve been doing, which is triple clicking the menu button to turn VO off
and back on again.
Cheers,
Donna

An active Voice Dream Reader subscription on Mac

2022-06-22 Thread Tibor Niesner
Hello,

I have an interresting thing. The Voice Dream Reader shows an active
subscription in app preferences. But when I look at the subscriptions in iCloud
settings, there are not any active subscriptions.
It shows me after the last update.

I don’t understand it.

Thank you.

Best regard

Hi,

If you have a Bluetooth keyboard connected, use VO-s. I don't believe there is
a Siri Remote gesture.

Hi!
I think its time for the VoiceDream developer to take a moment to think about
how braille could be implemented properly.
Though I am not the right person to explain this as I am not the best in
English, even though I do understand it and can read and write a lot.
But its a pain to explain such things properly translating Swedish to English
directly from my head.

 Hi Donna,
I have one of the older remotes, but what I do is locate the role of three
buttons. You would hold in the middle button and say “turn on voiceover.
“That will stay in effect until you wish to turn it off using the same
procedure. We use this often, as my wife doesn’t wish to hear the speech
when she is viewing the Apple TV contact. It works fine. S Sometimes, she

Hi Donna,

On the phone, if you do a three finger double tap, that will turn voiceover
speech off. Then you can issue the same command to turn it back on.

 Hi Donna,
I have one of the older remotes, but what I do is locate the role of three
buttons. You would hold in the middle button and say “turn on voiceover.
“That will stay in effect until you wish to turn it off using the same

basic finder question

2022-06-22 Thread Andrew Leland
Hey all,

I'm a lifelong sighted Mac user currently in the process of becoming a
blind Mac user. I've also decided to learn JAWS (even though I would've
never dream of switching to Windows otherwise) since I can't avoid MS Word
in my work and I've been gobsmacked by how frequently Word for Mac stops
working compared to Scrivener, which is my main workhorse word processor.
(also finding some of the JAWS navigation, especially on the web, more
reliable and intuitive than VoiceOver for MacOS).

Anyway none of this has anything to do with my question for you, which is
as follows:

is there any way to move items in the finder without just copying,
deleting, then pasting in the new location? I know in Windows you can "cut"
a file and then "paste" it elsewhere, removing this middle step of having
to then go back and delete the file... I have half-heartedly tried reading
the apple documentation about dragging and dropping with VoiceOver but I
haven't had the courage to try. is it more efficient than copy file, paste
file, delete file in the finder?

thanks, and thanks for including me in this group!

Re: basic finder question

2022-06-22 Thread Greg Wocher
Hello,
When you go to do the paste command use option plus command plus V instead of
just command plus V. This will move the file rather than just copying it.

Re: basic finder question

2022-06-22 Thread Jürgen Fleger
Hi Andrew,

I’m sorry to hear you are getting blind. Ask as much as you want here in this
list. A lot of great experts share their knowledge. You could also have a look
on applevis.com . Very rich.

Press CMD + Option + v instead of just CMD + v to move an element in the Finder.

Scrivener for Mac is also a great tool which is quite accessible to VoiceOver.
Unfortunately Word isn’t as accessible as it could be. In this point I’m very
disappointed from Microsoft. They could really do better.

All the best
Jürgen

Working around MS Word

2022-06-22 Thread Andrew Leland
Here’s another question for the group:

One of the main reasons I’m considering abandoning MacOS for Windows is that I
have to send and receive MS Word docs, often with track changes and comments. I
primarily work in Scrivener and export to Word, but I can’t give up word
entirely because I need to be able to check the formatting of the exported
docx, and process tracked changes and comments on files I’m receiving. Does
anyone know of a way to bring a .docx with track changes and comments into a
more accessible program than Word on the Mac? Like maybe Apple Pages? Trying to
think of a way that I don’t have to switch to Windows, though I’m sort of
resigned to that fate considering everything I know about MS Word for MacOS...

Thanks and high fives all around,
Andrew

word processing beyond MS Word

2022-06-22 Thread Andrew Leland
Here’s another question for the group:

One of the main reasons I’m considering abandoning MacOS for Windows is
that I have to send and receive MS Word docs, often with track changes and
comments. I primarily work in Scrivener and export to Word, but I can’t
give up word entirely because I need to be able to check the formatting of
the exported docx, and process tracked changes and comments on files I’m
receiving. Does anyone know of a way to bring a .docx with track changes
and comments into a more accessible program than Word on the Mac? Like
maybe Apple Pages? Trying to think of a way that I don’t have to switch to
Windows, though I’m sort of resigned to that fate considering everything I
know about MS Word for MacOS...

Thanks and high fives all around,
Andrew

Re: Voice Dream Reader for mac and Braille display

2022-06-22 Thread 'Andrew Lamanche' via MacVisionaries
I’ve written to Winston chen but he’s not responded yet. He says he’s no
Braille display which begs a question how he can properly make Braille access
possible if he doesn’t bother about Braille displays.

Yes, when I hit the spacebar, Voice Dream Reader for Desktop begins to
read the book but I can’t locate the text which it is reading and thus I
can’t mute voiceover and read by using my refreshable Braille display. I
have asked the developer but he doesn’t seem to know as he says he doesn’t
have a Braille display. This is a bit of a drawback for me as I like on
occasion to read quietly; reading using Braille is a completely different
experience for me. I think on an IPhone one can use a Braille display and
you can actually touch the text with your finger. On the mac, I can’t
find the text being read anywhere.

I”m not quite sure but when did yu subscribe to the application? The first two
weeks are free so if you had subscribed before the two weeks are up, maybe your

Hi Andrew,

to be honnest: Using Pages and exporting to Word works but I’d never rely on it
fully. I’d use Pages and asked a sighted assistant afterwards. You could ask
your own assistant or you could use a service like Aira for iPhone to check
whether the layout looks well. But all in all exporting from Pages works fine.
It depends how suffisticated the layout might be.

All the best

Sorry Tim, Word for Mac works terrible. Reading a simple text might work but in
the moment a document is more suffisticated or very long Word doesn’t work very
well.
In my opinion Outlook is the only app which works quite well using VoiceOver.

Fwd: Is Voiceover broken in HomeKit in IOS?; Follow-up: 802217366

2022-06-22 Thread 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries
Hi all,

After my emails last week regarding Homekit, I decided to email Apple
Accessibility. Here is their response. I’m relieved to know that the problem
wasn’t on my end, but I sure hope that Apple can create a fix for it soon.
Cheers,
Donna

Recent versions have improved somewhat in their accessibility.
Make sure you’re using the latest Office 365, monthly channel, for the best
that Microsoft Word for Mac currently offers to the VoiceOver user. Old
versions are definitely problematic.

 Hi,

I think that you might be running on old information about Microsoft Word.
It is very accessible on the Mac now. But, if you do want to move docs
back-and-forth between word, and an app, Pages is very accessible, and can
import and export to Microsoft Word easily.

Re: Voice Dream Reader for mac and Braille display

2022-06-22 Thread Karen Lewellen

Hi Andrew,
actually answering the second question as well.
Lynx is a browser, and there is a compiled edition that, according to
their website works for mac os x.
As stated, not only am I not using the mac for what I shared, working
from the idea that a mac browser could load a file, much as in Linux, but
I am not a braille user either.
At the time of my writing this email, I am waiting to hear back from the
Lynx development list, the browser gets updated regularly, to confirm
the last edition of Macos the compiles are firm with.
One member states that the compiles simple work, but I wish greater
confirmation for you.

best,
Karen

Hi Andrew,
Certainly.
Let me preface that I am *not* using the mac to accomplish this task, but
cannot imagine why the process would not be comparative, its just a file.
Also, for my own record keeping I tend to change the name when I save the file
to a .txt from the .XML source.

For my explanation lets pretend you have a copy of say John Steinbeck's east of
Eden.
when the zip archive is unpacked then you will have several files that contain
the title, with proper capitalization, including one that says
East_of_Eden.XML
Again I unpack the zip file in its own directory or folder, so to avoid
confusion with other common files bookshare sends every time.
once unpacked I simply type the file name into my browser.
As I use a shell service based on Ubuntu Linux I have several lower graphics
options. To keep the explanation simple, I might type
lynx east_of_Eden.XML
I could even use a wildcard if the title is especially long, something like
lynx East_*.XML
the result is for me the same.
my browser presents what is actually already a text edition of the file,
displaying XML, much as it displays .html files.
because the browser also, when properly compiled even for the Mac, has the
option to save to a local file, or email the file, I can, after choosing this
command and saving the file to what I wish, say eastofe.txt
You can choose whatever file name works for you, using .txt as the extension.
What happens next though depends on how you read regular text files with your
braille display.
I suppose? in theory you could even read in your browser if desired.
For the record, as shared, there is a mac edition of lynx, if actually using
the tool resonates.
Sing out if you have more questions.
Kare

Karen,

I???m intrigued by the way you deal with DAISY in this way. I wasn???t aware
that .xml file actually holds the text of the book so I didn???t dare play with
them. Could you describe the steps you take loading such files into your
browser? do I understand you correctly?

Andrew

Bookshare provides a format called Daisy text. In the zip archive is a .XML
file which is the actual text itself.
i am not a braille user, but do wonder if you loaded the XML file into
something like tables if it could be read that way?
Personally I take mine, load them into a browser, save them as text and read
them in my word processor.
