Can do. Thanks.

I had the occasion to send out about sixty files attached to email messages. They were all JPeg

them in email, so, so be it. Anyway, here's the thing. Everything I'm about to described was done
on an up-to-date Monterey system. If I open the folder in Finder containing these sixty JPegs, they
show up in a nice sorted order, alphabetically by name. But when I open the same folder in the
attach files dialog in an email message using standard Mac Mail, there appears to be no order to
the file llist. There is, though, a method for changing the sort order, but it doesn't work. If you
VO-LEFT several times, you'll eventually get to a control called "change grouping." When
focused on that control you'll hear a message to hold down the Option key to change sort order. I
did this, and the only choices available were tag and none. However, if I clicked the "change
grouping" button instead, I also got name, which is what I wanted, but checking it didn't
cause the list of files to re-sort. Did I do something wrong, or have I discovered a problem?

Thanks in advance.

Lost Passwords, a Cautionary Tale

2022-02-25 Thread Steve Matzura
I had the occasion to have to replace an email account on an iPad last
night. At first I thought I could just change the in and out server
addresses and passwords, but then I thought why not just rip out the old
one, which hadn't been used in a year and a half, and add it again. So I
did--or tried to. I deleted the old account, but when I went to add the
new one, it occurred to me that I didn't remember the email password.
You know, it's one of those things you set up and hope you'll never have
to change unless, as in this case, you change domain providers and
forget what you chose. No problem--I'll just sync the iPad with the
other Apple devices on the account.

Or so I thought.

The first rabbithole down which I went was Safari's password list. The
email account wasn't there.

Next I tried Keychain Access. Vacuously empty. Hey, I thought Keychain
Access held every password known to a Mac in its database. Guess not!

Next, a call to Apple technical support just in case I was missing
something, and another to Apple's disability access help line in case I
might have stumbled upon an accessibility issue with Keychain Access.
Nope, no issues, no accessibility problems. Just no email account
password stored anywhere.

And it can't even be gotten from System Preferences, although it *is*
possible to change it. There's even a menu accessible from
VO-Command-Spacebar with options on it like Cut and Copy, but they're
all grayed; the only active one is Delete. Go figya!

So, if iCloud is so great for synchronizing accounts across devices,
what about email?

Apple says that, except for mail addresses supported by Apple itself
through iCloud,  the only way to save an email account's username and
password is to log into that account via Safari. But what if the email
provider doesn't offer Web-based email via direct access to the account,
i.e., logging directly into the Web-based mail system instead of going
through CPanel or some other portal? Easy and pretty obvious answer:
You're stuck--at least that's the polite way of putting it (LOL).

So it's back to CPanel login to my domain for me, where I'll have to
reset the password for the email account in question, go into two Apple
devices to update it, and then finally create the account on the iPad.
You can be sure that when I set this account's new password, I'll use a
password creation formula I devised some time ago and follow it to the
letter! That password formula hasn't failed me in over twelve years.

So, was there an easier way to have accomplished this, or is an email
address not associated with the iCloud domain and Apple ecosystem truly
on its own? I suspect the latter.

On Mac OS 10.14 and later as I remember, you can press
ctrl+option+command+shift+arrows
Left and right arrows change across list of choices,
Up and down arrows change the value for that option of current focus.

Hope it helps,

2022-02-25 Thread Herbie Allen
Good news, there is a much easier way. Go to passwords on any device and add in
the information manually. You will be able to pull it up when you need to and
you should be good to go.
Also, make sure your devices are logged into the same iCloud account. I’m
gathering it’s not with the way you mentioned pulling up info on another device.

Re: Alternativ web browser

2022-02-25 Thread Jonathan Cohn
No, Chrome and Edge use the same basic engine, but might use slightly different
ways to communicate with VoiceOver.
Firefox uses a third web rendering tool.
I am truly amazed at this complaint, I have 7 year old Macintosh running the
latest MacOS, and find Safari and VoiceOver are generally working better
together than when I first got the computer.
That being said, websites that are using a lot of JavaScript to move items
around visually or constantly update a panel with new items are often
problematic with VoiceOver. Also, some sites will provide more information
about a point on the screen when the mouse is moved over that point. If Mouse
follows VoiceOver cursor is on for these sites, then there might be a delay as
the additional information is populated from the DOM to the AOM to VoiceOver.
You can create a Macintosh activity to temporarily change Mouse follows
behavior, for these sites.
Jonathan

Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn

More HomePod weirdness, can anyone explain?

2022-02-25 Thread 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries
Hi all,

So, last night my kitchen HomePod stopped working … again. I just now went
into the Home app, and it said, Kitchen HomePod Account needs attention. I
tapped that, and it said I needed to enter my AppleID password. So I did.
Twice. And both times it said Verification Failed. The first time I Manually
entered the password, the second time I entered it from Passwords. Not knowing
what else to do, I have unplugged the HomePod, and am about to reset it …
again. The weird thing is, both the HomePod minis are working just fine.
Anyone have any idea what could be going on here?
Thanks,
Donna

Re: More HomePod weirdness, can anyone explain?

2022-02-25 Thread 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries
So this just gets weirder and weirder. When I reset the HomePod, all went as
expected until it got to the point where it was transferring settings. Then I
got an error message that the HomePod couldn’t connect to wifi. I retried
resetting, with no luck. We have a HomePod that we’re not using—long story—so
I decided to try that one, thinking that perhaps the wifi in the original one
had somehow broken. That one reset automatically, but I went through the same
thing, all worked well until I got the error message Unable to Join wifi. This
would lead me to believe that there’s a problem with our wifi, but one
HomePod, two minis, one Apple TV, five Sonos speakers, and one iPad are all
connected and having no issues.

At this point, I’m clueless. I don’t even know what to try next. Anyone have
any thoughts?

Hi!
To me it sounds like a wifi issue with the HomePod itself.
I don’t have one as they’re not sold in Sweden from what I know.

Re: More HomePod weirdness, can anyone explain?

2022-02-25 Thread 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries
Well, for now, at least, it seems to be resolved.

We have an Orbi mesh network. We rebooted the modem, and the Orbis, and moved
our extender a little bit closer to the base unit and to the place where the
HomePod Is. That seems to have done the trick, though I still don’t understand
the iCloud account error or why everything but the HomePod stayed connected.
Cheers,
Donna

To change what the Q does just find it in the table move right and choose
another item from the list. To remove it find it in the table and then stop
interacting with the table and click the remove button.
MacOS has several other expandable tables like in the keyboard shortcuts and
Network areas of system preferences that act almost identical. So if you can
learn to control this dialog then perhaps the others will become intuitive for
you.

Re: Lost Passwords, a Cautionary Tale

2022-02-25 Thread Steve Matzura
Right. That's an after-the-fact solution though. In a roundabout way, I
suppose I was offhandedly saying that, yes, you can add any password to
anything in the Safari password list (and probably in Keychain Access as
well).

On 2/25/2022 11:27 AM, Herbie Allen wrote:

Good news, there is a much easier way. Go to passwords on any device and add in
the information manually. You will be able to pull it up when you need to and
you should be good to go.
Also, make sure your devices are logged into the same iCloud account. I’m
gathering it’s not with the way you mentioned pulling up info on another device.

On Feb 25, 2022, at 07:19, Steve Matzura wrote:

I had the occasion to have to replace an email account on an iPad last night.
At first I thought I could just change the in and out server addresses and
passwords, but then I thought why not just rip out the old one, which hadn't
been used in a year and a half, and add it again. So I did--or tried to. I
deleted the old account, but when I went to add the new one, it occurred to me
that I didn't remember the email password. You know, it's one of those things
you set up and hope you'll never have to change unless, as in this case, you
change domain providers and forget what you chose. No problem--I'll just sync
the iPad with the other Apple devices on the account.

Or so I thought.

The first rabbithole down which I went was Safari's password list. The email
account wasn't there.

Next I tried Keychain Access. Vacuously empty. Hey, I thought Keychain Access
held every password known to a Mac in its database. Guess not!

Next, a call to Apple technical support just in case I was missing something,
and another to Apple's disability access help line in case I might have
stumbled upon an accessibility issue with Keychain Access. Nope, no issues, no
accessibility problems. Just no email account password stored anywhere.

And it can't even be gotten from System Preferences, although it *is* possible
to change it. There's even a menu accessible from VO-Command-Spacebar with
options on it like Cut and Copy, but they're all grayed; the only active one is
Delete. Go figya!

So, if iCloud is so great for synchronizing accounts across devices, what about
email?

Apple says that, except for mail addresses supported by Apple itself through
iCloud, the only way to save an email account's username and password is to
log into that account via Safari. But what if the email provider doesn't offer
Web-based email via direct access to the account, i.e., logging directly into
the Web-based mail system instead of going through CPanel or some other portal?
Easy and pretty obvious answer: You're stuck--at least that's the polite way of
putting it (LOL).

So it's back to CPanel login to my domain for me, where I'll have to reset the
password for the email account in question, go into two Apple devices to update
it, and then finally create the account on the iPad. You can be sure that when
I set this account's new password, I'll use a password creation formula I
devised some time ago and follow it to the letter! That password formula hasn't
failed me in over twelve years.

So, was there an easier way to have accomplished this, or is an email address
not associated with the iCloud domain and Apple ecosystem truly on its own? I
suspect the latter.

More password weirdness

2022-02-25 Thread Steve Matzura
After I changed the password for the email account via CPanel on my
domain (discussed in a previous thread), I went to enter it and restart
mail fetching on the three devices associated with the account--an iMac
with up-to-date Monterey, an iPad with whatever the latest iPadOS
version is, and an iPhone on iOS 15.3.1. The Mac and iPad changes went
through immediately and successfully. After two hours of tearing my hair
out because the iPhone change would not work, even after removing and
re-adding the email account, I had a long and involved screenshare
session with Apple technical support. More on that conversation in a minute.

I use a password formula for all passwords to all things belonging to
me. I tried to use the same strategy when coming up with a password for
this email account. My formula looks something like the following: The
first five characters are a standard prefix, like Abc12, followed by a
special character, like maybe the dollar-sign symbol ("$"), followed by
another three- to five-character string indicating the thing the
password is for. This time, I went a little outside these parameters in
the following way: The prefix was the one I always use (and no, it's not
Abc12), the special character is the one I always use (and no, it's not
dollar-sign because I've discovered over the years that dollar-sign
isn't 100% accepted on every place for which a password is needed), and
the suffix this time contained three letters, a number-sign ("#"), and
two digits. So, my password looked a little like this: Abc12$Xyz38 - Try
as I would, iOS kept telling me that there was no password set for the
email account. Apple watched me painstakingly manually add the account
and fill in all the fields correctly, always with the same result. Then
I had a thought: The only thing I did differently when creating this
password was that for the first time ever, I used the number-sign
symbol. What would happen if I took that out? I tried it and it worked!
Needless to say, Nicholas from Apple technical support was quite amazed
at this and has elevated it to engineering for further study.

Why did the number-sign work as part of an email password on MacOS and
iPadOS but not on iOS? I don't know yet, but if there's an iOS update in
the next wee while, I'll bet my number-sign-in-an-email-password problem
fix will be part of it.

Attention All Amazon Prime Subscribers

2022-02-25 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Everyone,

I am posting this because I recently discovered a new resource for accessing
/ downloading newly released and more, Audible audiobooks at no additional
charge to Prime subscribers.

Please understand that there is a great deal about Amazon and Amazon prime
benefits that many find rather confusion, including me, so I am just going
to relay my experience and in no way am I posting as an expert.

Okay, the other day, I saw an advertisement for a newly released collection
of short stories that were published on Kindle, only, with audio narration
(narration by Audible). There was a fee for the collection but the
advertisement stated that Prime members could download and read the
collection for free.

Intrigued, I fired up my trusty iOS Kindle app and opened the Discover tab.

Now remember, I'm going to keep this as simple as possible. In no way was
my first experience a quick and smooth one for I had no idea of how any of
this worked.

Okay, after opening the Discover tab, I selected the category, "Prime
Reading." There is also a "Kindle Unlimited" category, which I did not
explore.

I suspect that the Kindle Unlimited program is to Prime Reading as the
Amazon Music Unlimited program is to Prime Music; a guess, only.

Once I selected Prime Reading, a new screen was displayed. There are
several sub categories to explore but, in order to search for a specific
title, I selected "Browse the Catalog."

On the next screen, there are two important items to note: (1) the search
field and (2) the filter button.

Whether you merely want to browse the catalog or search for a specific
title, set the filter to "eBooks with Audible" and launch your search.

All of the resulting titles will be eBooks that have Audible narration that
are free for Prime members to read in Kindle and/or listen to via Audible.

Of course there are many, many ways to navigate through the Prime Reading
universe but the above was the method I used to get started.

What I find most delightful is that I have been able to download some titles
that were published for Kindle, only, and still enjoy the Audible experience
without having to pay additional fees.

Okay, I hope you find this useful.

Happy Reading,

Mark

Re: CopyClip clipboard manager for Safari - Has anyone got this to work?

2022-02-25 Thread 'Ron' via MacVisionaries
Hi there, thanks forr the reply. If I opem Copyclip from the application folder
I get the message “copyclip has no windows”. If I copy some text from Safari to
my clipboard I thought there should be a copyclip option in the menu bar. This
is not there and if I go back to copyclip via Aplication folder I get the
original message of no window. Maybe I am approaching it incorrectly? Ron.
