Re: shutting down my Mac

I'm sure you'll be happy with it. It's a good choice.
I used to have a 2013 MacBook Air 13. I really liked it. I would have kept it a
lot longer if I had not made the mistake of buying it with only 128 GB of
storage.

I ordered a book in braille from National Braille Press on using the Mac which
I will use for reference, along with I expect to be great assistance from this

I have tried using CTRL + Delete on both my 2018 Mac mini, and my 2019 MacBook
Pro 13, and have not been able to get this key-command to initiate a shut down
on either machine.

I am able to use CTRL + Eject, on my 2018 Mac mini, with an Apple wired USB
keyboard, to bring up a shut down dialogue.
This key-command does not work on my 2019 MacBook Pro 13, because TouchBar Macs
do not have an Eject key.

Hi Les,

I just wanted to say congratulations. Now that my Air is up and running, I’m
really enjoying it. I think you’ll be very happy with your choice. And I agree
with you about the function keys. The touch bar isn’t awful or anything, if it
had been more responsive, I probably wouldn’t have minded it so much. But I’m
quite happy having function keys again.

Have fun with your new toy! :)
Cheers,
Donna

Working with multiple windows on the Mac help

2021-06-01 Thread FIOGKOS
Hi everybody, I need some help. I hope I can explain my issue thoroughly so
that you can understand what I am asking. Coming from a windows background on
windows I am able to have multiple windows open for example, a Microsoft word
document, and Internet explorer page, and email. I can press the key
combination alt tab to cycle through windows. Now that I am working on the Mac
I have a open folder in my downloads finder window, I want to open another
folder that is on my desktop when I do this I cannot recycle through the
windows. Or at least I don’t know how to do this. It seems like when I am
opening another folder up, for example in documents or even a different folder
in downloads the previously opened folder disappears and every time I want to
switch between folders I have to re-open from the start. What I am trying to
say is I want to have multiple folders opened and be able to cycle through
without having to close each one. How can I do this? I hope I haven’t confused
you too much, thank you for any help.

2021-06-01 Thread Jessica Moss
Ok, I have no idea if this was how this was supposed to look, and I
unfortunately don’t have the original string anymore, but it looked something
like http://localhost , with a string of numbers after it.
That was the only url in the config file I found, and I tried to override it
with the following:

ai_service_url = "
1I8Y3CMP3D

The The string of numbers at the end being my activation key; however, I have
no idea if that’s how it’s supposed to look, and I have no idea if I’ve messed
something up, and if I have, how to go back and fix it.

Re: Working with multiple windows on the Mac help

2021-06-01 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

A couple of things to comment on here. First, the example you used with
respect to Windows is slightly different than what you’re asking to happen on
your Mac. Your example in Windows used Word and IE which are different
applications. This is more or less the same on the Mac. If you had something
open in Word on the Mac, something in Pages and something in Safari, you can
simply press cmd-tab to cycle between these app windows. If you have multiple
documents open within Word, then use cmd-accent to cycle between the open
documents, or windows, of a specific app.

The Finder, where Desktop folders and such are found is slightly different.
You still can use the cmd-accent key combination to cycle between open Finder
windows, but you’ll need to make sure that one preference is set for it to work
as you’re hoping. So, when in the Finder, press cmd-comma to bring up the
Finder Preferences window. Make sure that the General tab is selected in the
Toolbar, and find the item that mentions opening folders in tabs instead of new
windows. If this item is not checked, then Finder windows should behave in the
manner you desire. You can then use cmd-accent to cycle between these windows
within the Finder.

Remember that there are two different commands here. The cmd-tab cycles
between open applications and will cycle you to the front most window in each
app. The cmd-accent command cycles within the focused application windows.

Finally, if you wish, you can also use the Window Chooser, VO-f2-f2, to bring
up a list of open windows within the focused application instead of using
cmd-accent to cycle through them. Both have their benefits. As well, you
could use the Application Chooser, VO-f1-f1, to bring up the Application
Chooser screen, then arrow down through the open applications, then right and
down through the open windows within the given application.

Re: shutting down my Mac

2021-06-01 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

Like Brad, I am unable to make the ctrl+delete key combination initiate a
shutdown. I have tried it on a 2020 M1 MacBook Pro, 2020 M1 MacBook Air, 2020
Intel MacBook Air, 2017 MacBook Air nor my 2009 MacPro with wired Apple
keyboard. The keyboard shortcuts listed in this Apple Support article

https://support.apple.com/en-ca/HT201236

Also don’t mention control+delete. Now, there are sometimes keyboard shortcuts
available that are not easily found or published on the Net, but I’m thinking
that the original suggestion may have had a typo.

Re: Working with multiple windows on the Mac help

2021-06-01 Thread Brad Snyder
As always, Tim provides a concise explanation.
Yes, working with multiple windows is a little different on the Mac, but once
you get use to it, this can be a powerful tool to manage your workflow.
Using a combination of multiple windows and tabs within an application can be a
useful tool to manage what you are doing. This can be done in most
applications, not just in Finder. For example, I use a combination of Safari
windows and tabs to manage what I may be doing on the web. This can also be
done with Windows in some applications, but it is much more common across
different applications on the Mac.

Re: shutting down my Mac

2021-06-01 Thread Brad Snyder
I suspect the original poster could have been mistaken in stating that the CTRL
+ Delete key-command could be used to initiate a shut down.
On some Mac keyboards, there is an Eject key located immediately above the
Delete/Backspace key. I suspect the poster was thinking about CTRL + Eject,
rather than CTRL + Delete.

Thank you so so so much, this is just the Explanation I was looking for. Now
things make sense. Thank you for all the options you have given me. It’ll take
a little bit of getting used to and I will have to try it a few times until
it’s in bedded in my head. Using your instructions as a guide I’m sure
everything will work out just as I wish. From the bottom of my heart thank you
so much for understanding what I was asking and the differences even though I
wasn’t precise in my examples. Thank you for your help and all your knowledge

Re: I Hit the Jackpot

2021-06-01 Thread Kathryn Zodrow
That’s awesome! Yep, I looked at an old email about the M1 chip and it sounds
like the speed is a lot faster compared with the Intel processors on older
Macs. Right now, I’m using a MacBook from 2007. I got it used from a friend
that I work with back in 2013. His sister had a Mac that she didn’t use much
and I got it for a really good price. It has slowed down quite a bit though
especially when I’m using Safari, so it will be nice to eventually get a new
one! 😇 last time I went to the Apple store, I asked one of the tech people how
much longer my Mac would be good for. He said probably about another year. So
maybe I’ll get a new one by the end of this year.

Battery Question

2021-06-01 Thread Les Kriegler
Hi All,

I went through the initial setup and am in the process of obtaining updates,
there was a Big Sur update and apparently apps from the App Store. I am
charging my unit and wonder how one gets to information about the battery,
available charge in percentage, how many hours of battery do I have, etc.
All help appreciated.

Best,

RE: I Hit the Jackpot

2021-06-01 Thread Les Kriegler
Hi Katie,

Here is an option to consider. If you have or obtain an Apple Card, you can
purchase Apple products such as a Mac and pay it off over 12 months with no
interest. Also, you can get Three percent back on your purchases. This is the
option I chose as I will pay off my unit in 12 months without withdrawing the
amount from our account.

Best,

Les
