Problems in dictation

2020-11-12 Thread muhammad babar Shahzad
Hi,
Thanks for the suggestions about learning pages.
I have problem with using the dictation on my MacBook Pro 16 with the latest
updates of the os.
I am able to dictate the text for a short time and it only lets me dictate few
words. Afterwards, no matter whatever I try to dictate, I only see ‘yes’. I
have switched off the dictation but, the issue gets resolved temporarily. I
have also decreased the volume of the internal microphone.
Any leads for addressing this problem please?
Thanks in advance.
Muhammad.

The Apple magic keyboards are a good choice. There are two models, a large one

Re: Electronic Signing

2020-11-12 Thread Karen Lewellen
One alternative that may work in some situations is to ask the individual
or institution seeking our signature if an electronic statement will work.
Something like,
My name is daffy duck, and this email line constitutes my signature
provided on said date.
Rather a few governmental institutions in Ontario are starting to allow
this, especially if there may be an issue with a proper signature.

Best,
Kare

Photos App on Mac OS and Voiceover

2020-11-12 Thread Pete De Vasto
Hi all,

I bit the bullet and did the upgrade to Catalina yesterday. So far, the move
has been very successful. I’m still learning about some of the new and
different features, but up to now I’ve been able to do everything I used to do
on Mojave just fine.

I do have a number of photos and movies on my iPhone, and started to look into
using the Photos app so I can store them on my Mac, but it’s not coming all
that easy. So, I was wondering if anyone has done much with the Photos app, and
are there any settings I might be able to tweak so it works better with VO?
It’s hard to do Google searches, because everywhere I’ve landed on so far talks
about doing voice overs in movies!

Thanks for any ideas,
Pete De Vasto

Re: Apple mail

2020-11-12 Thread Brad Snyder
Some people like the full-size keyboard with extended keys and Number-pad, and
some prefer the smaller size keyboard like on a MacBook.
Personally, I like the full size keyboard because I hate not having a Number
pad. It is really a personal choice.

Time for a new Mac

2020-11-12 Thread Steve Matzura
My 2012 Mac Mini is nearing the end of its natural life. It's already
not possible to upgrade to Big Sur, but more than that, it now runs
quite hot and acts squirelly after an hour or so of just sitting there
doing nothing, then when I give it something to do, it really starts
acting like a person would act who has a high temperature--gets
sluggish, misses keystrokes, takes way too long to do things that took
mere minutes, etc. Sometimes VoiceOver lags in both speech output and
navigation ... it's time to think about a replacement.

So, what's your recommendation? I'd prefer a Mini, but an all-in-one
would be a fine second choice because it has a screen after all. I
really do not want a MacBook because I just don't have the horizontal
real-estate anywhere for anything even that small, which is why a
stand-up all-in-one like an iMac something would be far superior physically.

What do I use a Mac for? Not much other than Zoom, Pro Tools with
Komplete Kontrol, and occasionally Reaper, plus the usual handful of
native applications like Messages, Pages, Keynote, TextEdit, Calendar,
and a few others.

If I'm going to spend Mac money, it's got to be spent on something
that'll last me at least another six or seven years--up to the last
operating system version the system will allow--so I'd prefer to buy
something new even though it's big money rather than buy something a few
years older that'll only last me four more years or les.

Since nobody really knows much about the new M1 processor and how it
behaves with VoiceOver, not to mention music applications like Pro Tools
and Reaper, I'm hesitant to get one of those, but wow do they sound
tempting and sw'w'w'weet!

So, with those two things bracketing my choices--something new but maybe
not cutting-edge versus something a few years old that won't last the
full seven-year cycle, what are your thoughts?

Re: Time for a new Mac

2020-11-12 Thread Brad Snyder
I recently replaced my 2012 Mac mini. It was exhibiting the same behavior as
yours, running hot when it had just been sitting doing presumably nothing, and
taking a long time to load applications or boot up.
I replaced the old Mac mini with a new Mac mini, and have been very happy with
it.
My new mini has the i7 processor, with an excessive amount of RAM, and I went
with the 2TB SSD. The performance is awesome, and I am very happy with it. I
think it will serve me well for a long time.
While Apple has introduced a Mac mini with the M1 processor, they still offer
the Intel minis, both the i5 and i7 models, minus the low-end i3 configuration,
at the same prices as before Tuesday’s introduction of the M1 models.
If you have been happy with your previous mini, this could be a good option for
you to consider.

Re: Time for a new Mac

2020-11-12 Thread Steve Matzura

Thanks, Brad.

When I looked at Mini's jut now, I did not see the i7
configuration--only the i5, but that shiny zippy new M1 chip
configuration was just so enticing, well, I just had to go for it--the
whole thing--full memory and full storage, and it wasn't much more
expensive than the 2012 Mini was, which surprised me. . I am now
over-the-top excited about getting it just a few days after my birthday.
I got all the interface cables for Thunderbolt and USB thiks-and-that,
too. The only thing I didn't see available was a network adapter or
interface for ethernet because I'd much prefer a wired Internet
connection than a wireless one even though the machine will only bee a
few feet from the home router. I know there are, or may be, some issues
regarding Big Sur with Pro Tools, Reaper and Komplete Kontrol, not to
mention a few other third-party plugins and virtual software
instruments, but I'm hopeful they'll be solved by Christmas time. Since
the machine isn't coming until almost then anyway, I'm not particularly
concerned about them, if they do exist.
